On another note, I thought yesterday was well umpired for the most part. It wasn’t over-umpired in the wet, although they probably let too many holding the ball calls go.

With that said, the first 10 minutes of the last quarter was all Essendon. I felt like they got 6-7 frees in that time, after only receiving 12 for the rest of the game. We did well to quell another surge in momentum given the territory dominance it gave them.

The first 15mins of the game they were hanging off our blokes without the ball, it was so frequent and so blatant that one would be forgiven for thinking the were instructed to do so from their coach.

Umps swallowed the whilstle early, which is fine, as long as it's consistent.

It was nice to see Nathan Murphy in the rooms in the Collingwood puffer jacket after the game. Does he have an official role at the club or just hanging out with his mates?
He was manning the register for me earlier this year when I went to pick something up at the Club Shop!

Tell you what the role suits him

Last time he led a team out v Essendon

We always knew he'd be a star.

Steele, Josh and Billy all easily our top 3 yesterday. Nick neck and neck with Pendles for 4th and that's not a knock. We have some players in serious form.
The top 4 were ludicrously close. If Nick kicks accurately at goal on his second and third attempts he’s wearing the Anzac medal. Two kicks, that’s the margin we’re talking about for best on ground yesterday.

Beautifully put.👍

Fly is a very clever coach. Rather than going down the ‘protect and manage’ route for our veterans - he has used their experience to our advantage. He has exploited it!

The ‘protect and manage’ may come later in the season, but right now we say pfft to that. Knowing what happened in the third quarter last night and how we dealt with it - amazing.

I loved how when Essendoom had that run on in the second quarter, we changed our game plan in game to a slower, uncontested game.
Then when started to get a run on in the 3rd quarter we reverted back to moving the ball quickly and kicking deep inside F50....

I’m enjoying Frampton in the side, his form is holding up.

As much as I was looking forward to seeing Reef develop, you really need 2x 200cm key backs in today’s game.

We have that in Moore and Billy. Also shows who we should be targeting in MSD/National draft. Also why I think Dean struggles.

You need to be able to kill the long balls down the line or coming in, you can’t substitute height.
You really don’t, at least not in the 22. 1 is fine and 1 as backup, but if the player is good enough it doesn’t make a difference. Nobody has ever thought that the Melbourne preferred combo (regarded as league best at their peak) of May and Lever are too short and they’re 193 and 194cm respectively.

Even oppo supporters on the main board thread were pointing out that it looked like the umps were trying to bring the bombers back in to the game. You know when the “neutrals” are pointing it out that it’s pretty bad.

Thought the umpiring was terrible

Not “worst of the season” tier terrible, but pretty bad.

Horribly inconsistent with no feel for the conditions at all.

The push in the back inconsistency was disgusting.

Yep. Frampton is holding up beautifully in the backline.

He understands the system and would be just as valuable at 194cm as long as he did exactly what he's doing now.

Has an engine with a turn of pace for a big guy, is strong, and can kick; also carries a good amount of mongrel.

The whistle was well and truly away except for two patches, the first few minutes of game where it went our way and that period in the last where it went their way. While I don’t mind the whistle being away, it does give taggers more rope to hold etc, which certainly favoured Essendon.

yup they were kicking goals outta the'r ass . but we didnyt kick at leat 5 fairly easy shots
We also had a dominant patch of multiple consecutive inside 50s where we couldn’t find a target and they were able to repel without us getting a shot on goal. I’m glad we were able to kick away late and have the scoreboard reflect the game.

Membrey doesn’t get a lot of time in here, but we are really benefiting from his experience, he’s playing his role and we are much better for it.

He also seems to be loving his time at the Pies. Gets around with a big grin. Good on him.👍

The smiles are infectuous. That 3rd quarter goal with 6 minutes remaining (Nick to Jordy) was a perfect sign of a happy team; it also evoked memories of the '23 GF. This is a great time to be alive, comrade.
