Wow. Didn't realise that was our 1,600th win.

Always remember Eddie making a song and dance about the race to 1,300 against Carlton.

Not only did we beat them to 1,300, we have now left them in our dust miles behind:)
The ladder is out of date, our 1,600 win was in the 2023 Grand Final.

Yesterday was our 1,618th win.

You really don’t, at least not in the 22. 1 is fine and 1 as backup, but if the player is good enough it doesn’t make a difference. Nobody has ever thought that the Melbourne preferred combo (regarded as league best at their peak) of May and Lever are too short and they’re 193 and 194cm respectively.

Steven May was listed as 190 cm up until a few seasons ago...

I’m enjoying Frampton in the side, his form is holding up.

As much as I was looking forward to seeing Reef develop, you really need 2x 200cm key backs in today’s game.

We have that in Moore and Billy. Also shows who we should be targeting in MSD/National draft. Also why I think Dean struggles.

You need to be able to kill the long balls down the line or coming in, you can’t substitute height.
He’s being helped by a good defensive structure up the ground (which you deserve as a key back), but what I have been impressed with is his ability to mop up at ground level with clean hands and then hit a target by hand or foot. Not bad for a bloke his size.

Steven May is the exception, and not the norm. He’s built like a Mack truck and in his prime had fantastic closing speed.

Anyway, perhaps you don’t need 2x in the same side, but your 2nd key back can’t be undersized. It’s felt like outside of Moore when we’ve had Frampton out we are just way too small.

One thing that struck me yesterday was how Sidey really stuck tackles. No mean feat in this era.
That’s one thing that even when he was playing shit early last year, he’s done and is important for us.

You could see that when they had the run of it yesterday and we let the ball spill forward from the contest to their runners, it was easy for them. But as soon as we locked that down, and Sidey is the best at it, we neutralised or won those contests and it was going back our way.

What is the norm? How many 200cm key defenders are there actually in the league?
Without looking I’d wager there’s probably less than you seem to believe is a requirement for teams to have.

Also, we won the flag in 2023 with an undersized second key tall, so… 🤷🏻

He's got all the tools to be excellent. It's all about what goes on inside his head for Billy.

Essendon did yesterday and they were very good in the air, but how many teams do play two 200cm KPDs. We have recently - and it works because Moore is ridiculously mobile for his height. Wouldn't be many others running with 2 blokes in defence who are that tall.

I think the conditions and our delivery suited Essendons tall defenders yesterday, but let’s be serious here, their defence didn’t work just because they had 2 uber talls, it worked because Ridley is very good and Reid is developing in to a genuine gun defender. McKay was almost useless, easily the most overpaid player in the league right now.

Here’s a fun fact:

This below is 48 year old Brad Scott after the game talking about Collingwood’s experienced players, and in particular Scott Pendlebury who he said looked … ”… very composed just as he did as a 18 / 19 year old” …

… and Brad Scott would know.

Scott Pendlebury’s first game was against the Brisbane Lions. Brad Scott also played in that game in what would be the last season of his footy career.

More to the point, their defence didn't work - even though they controlled the air - being too tall and less agile and effective below their knees was probably a factor in the way we scored against them.

Did their defence even work though? They gave up 100 points in the wet. They took some marks, but there were holes everywhere leading to, I think it was 15 marks, inside 50. I'm not saying this is because they had two players over 200cm, but that is one of the concerns with a defence lacking in mobility.

Ridley and Reid were very good. But the rest were mostly liabilities. Apart from maybe McGrath who did a good job on Bobby, but let himself down with poor disposal.

Well deserved award for Sidebottom. He’s really turned back the clock this year.
Sidearse is paying $101 for the Brownlow.
Well behind Petracca on $67 who has done ****all this year.

With expectation of Naicos so ridiculously high I reckon Sidey may pinch more votes.

Just nipping down to whack a couple of grey nurses on the Bottom.

I should have clarified, it suited their talls. Their defence crumbled pretty hard overall, mainly due to their smalls being average and having to deal with being a man down once the ball went to ground given McKay is a slow, lumbering useless sack of potatoes if he’s not marking the ball.

I never remember this being anything but the view of a very small clique.
Which years specifically?
He copped a lot of crap on here in 2021 because he kept on getting caught with the ball.

He was playing inside mid and getting it quite a lot, getting clear but then not releasing and getting caught by a secondary tackler. I think it's because we had such an inexperienced team that wouldn't have been getting to the right spots and Bucks didn't like hacking it forward so he tried to do too much when he got it.

Still don't remember any calls he should retire or be delisted.
