The sheer hypocrisy of the AFL and their optics for player safety/ protecting the head.

How could a single one of these umpires not:
1. Pay a free kick to Murphy when Fogarty obviously makes high contact.
2. Stop the game until he goes off in the arms of the medicos as a player with a known concussion history.
3. Stop the game when the ball comes in the immediate proximity of a player being taken from the field when De Goey does the right thing in avoiding the medicos?

i have this thing I do after a game, I go to the other teams game thread on their page, even when we lose which is kind of morbid! , and I have to say, well don’t to the crows posterswho acknowledged just how bad the umpiring was, the Murphy incident and the Johnson one, and when a cats fan says ‘by gee the umps were hard done by to lose that in the last 30 sec’ youknow something is up!

Johnson and Murphy calls/non-calls were absolutely ludicrous and could’ve impacted the final result

Most folks have a go at umpires due to feeling for their team. Everybody does it. But today was seriously blatant favouritism.

AFL needs an approach by the pies on this matter. It was so obvious even the commentators couldn’t help noting it this time.

I actually felt as though the commentators did their best to try and gloss over it. Especially Lewis - I could almost smell his tears through my TV screen after the final siren

I just rewatched the Murphy incident:
  • That’s a mark
  • That’s also high contact
  • Maybe front on contact too as he didn’t make contact with the ball, but hard to say he was looking at the ball
Either way, he deserved to take the kick. At worst, play needed to be stopped when he had:
  1. Blood pouring from his nose
  2. Doctors escorting him from the field
I know umpires need to adjudicate based on rules but a degree of common sense and intuitive decision making should be required to umpire at the elite level. Imagine JDG took the ball and gets tackled by the oppo player chasing him, barrelling into the doctors and the likely concussed Murphy.

I don’t think it was “blatant cheating” but I do wonder if the umpire was influenced by the crowd and didn’t want to blow the whistle. Which is obviously inexcusable. I wonder what the AFL are going to say about this.
