3) Out of Bounds
- Phil Doyle's Bit
http://www.afltips.com/people/phildoyle.html

"The Powerful Smell Of Mendacity."

"The big difference [in 2001] from Coburg's point of view is that
they will be in the traditional Coburg guernsey, rather than the
Coburg-Fitzroy Lions guernsey. It'll be the traditional Coburg
guernsey which is a dark, dark navy blue with a red sash. And,
similar to the Williamstown-Collingwood arrangement, where on the
MCG Richmond are playing, and I think Essendon might be the game,
they'll wear Richmond guernseys at that game.

That's no disadvantage because that will be an Essendon home
game.

And that seems to me a great step forward in terms of your two
choices. Do you want to wind up, or do you want to have a
partnership with, in this case, Richmond. And a partnership that
allows you to have the original, traditional, suburban, long
term, 100 year old Coburg guernsey and go back to the grass
roots.

There's a lot more for the Coburg Football Club than there was in
the Fitzroy alliance in this regard, because it's Coburg, there's
the traditional Coburg guernsey.

My understanding is that [the Richmond guernsey will be used] at
the MCG, now that may vary from year to year. Remembering they're
home games of other clubs, they're not home games of Coburg.

They won't be wearing the Richmond guernsey at Coburg."

- Ken Gannon, CEO of the Victorian Football league.

This of course was wonderful news for all those people who
watched the Richmond jumper running around against Murray the
Bush Kangaroos at City Oval in Coburg last weekend, where a list
consisting of 15 Richmond and 7 Coburg players were belted by the
peripatetic Kangaroos.

A wise man once said that people follow clubs, not teams. It's a
tribal thing, and if a tribal identity gets dissolved into a
broader corporate identity, what future for the tribe?

Richmond have gone on the record to say that if they get 80,000
people along to the MCG this weekend then it will put the Tigers
in the black. Which is the best argument to stay home and do the
lawn that I've heard in weeks.

Damian Drum has the full support of the Fremantle president
which, of course, means he is doomed. Freo will, of course, now
bounce back with a win.

The traditional local rivalry which has become the hallmark of
Australian Football is on display this weekend with Sydney taking
on Brisbane at the SCG. The Fitzroy Bears are a stuttering
personification of underachievement that has left me whelmed, and
if you think I meant overwhelmed you are wrong.

Football has never been in better shape. So much so that an
AFL/VFL type arrangement is being canvassed by several country
leagues where clubs are struggling to field lower grades. Most
notably the Murray and Picola leagues. Why should we give a rats
arse about this I hear you say? Well, maybe it has something to
do with wanting the game to survive. It is now increasingly
obvious that player and umpire shortages are impacting across
grass roots football.

I think the AFL's response, to set up dodgy junior figures that
include everyone whose attended a (compulsory) Auskick programme
through their school as a junior footballer, is brilliant. I
think the strategy of ignoring this problem in the hope that it
will go away shows the subtle intelligence of leaving over a
hundred years of human sacrifice in the hands of marketing and PR
people.

At least this way the AFL doesn't have to do anything about it.

Neither, of course, does network television. Who have long
supported grass roots footy by scheduling matches at all hours of
the day and night in order to conflict with local and junior
leagues, thereby rendering them redundant.

In spite of this there are those dangerous souls who continue to
support local footy. We have their names and addresses, and they
will be receiving a visit from representatives of Mssrs. Packer
and Jackson shortly.

Watching Wayne Jackson and the CEO of Ansett - the guy whose eyes
are too close together - finding cruel and unusual ways to
support junior football in the city the other day prompted me to
wonder if the AFL was captive of its corporate sponsors.

The answer?

Absolutely.

Phil Doyle - remonstrating with the goal umpire.

Melbourne v. Western Bulldogs
Friday, 11 May 2001 - MCG 7:40 PM

This is a crucial game for the Western Bulldogs this week. They
currently have 2 wins, 4 losses. Another loss and they will all
but kiss goodbye any chance of a top four finish this year. The
Dees, on the other hand, are going along quite nicely at the
moment with 4 wins and 2 losses. They haven't beaten the Bulldogs
in a long time. Last year when these teams met, Melbourne were
leading by about 35 points at half time but were victims of a
legendary Bulldogs comeback. Incidentally, the comeback was
inspired Andrew Wills who quit the club last week.

The Bulldogs will regain Luke Darcy who was out last week through
suspension. They might also bring in either Mitch Hahn or Mark
Alvey who have been in great form in the VFL. Meanwhile the Dees
are likely to play Jeff White who has a knee injury. Leoncelli
injured his shoulder in last weeks 45 point win against Freo but
will probably also play. Both face
fitness tests before this Friday's game.

The Dees form has been a bit up and down, certainly not to the
same extent as the Dogs, but they aren't playing at their best at
the moment. Freo got out to a 24 point lead during the third
quarter but then the Dees produced a comeback of their own. They
kicked 5 of the next 6 goals in that quarter and then kicked 8 to
0 in the last. Players in good form for the Dees include:
Woewodin, Yze, Ward, Schwarz, Rigoni and Robertson. It was good
to see Robertson back up the previous weeks match-winning
performance with 3 goals against Fremantle.

In form players for the Bulldogs include the usual suspects such
as West, Brown, Johnson, Grant and Smith. However players such as
Harrison, Eagleton and Robbins are also going pretty well.
Harrison would have to be the trade of the season. He's taken on
players of the calibre of Hamill, Buckley and Dew so far and has
done a great job. Last week against Port, Harrison kept the
competitions leading goal kicker goal-less meanwhile notching up
25
possessions himself.

Melbourne are favourites for this game but I'm going to tip the
Bulldogs. Melbourne have been winning but probably were lucky to
win a couple of those games. For instance the Adelaide game and
the Sydney game. The Bulldogs have come up against some pretty
good opposition in the last 2 weeks in Hawthorn and Port
Adelaide. Even though they lost both games they did put in pretty
good performances. The inclusion of Luke Darcy will give the Dogs
a huge boost. I think it will be enough for the Bulldogs to turn
around their season, starting on Friday night.

I predict the Bulldogs to win by 15 points

Richmond v ESSENDON
ADELAIDE v Fremantle
St Kilda v HAWTHORN
