"Beating the Drum"
Comment from 'The Half Back Flanker'

Everyone knows that if a senior coach publicly has the full
support of the board, then almost certainly the board will be
sharpening their knives and sounding out replacements.
An excerpt from Fremantle Chairman Ross McLean's statement,
released on May 9:
"The Board does not believe that the solution to the team's poor
performances to date will be solved by sacking the senior coach."
Roughly translated into layman's terms, this means:
"We are already looking for a replacement for Damian Drum."
When given the job at a poor-performing club, senior coaches are
usually given 2 to 3 years to achieve results.
The first year is usually a rebuilding phase, introducing young
players, getting players used to the new game plan, tactics and
strategies. The second year should bring moderate success,
perhaps finals' participation, and the third year more wins than
losses and strong showing in the finals. At least this is the
theory.
Taking over from Gerard Neesham for the 1999 season, the only way
Damian Drum could take Fremantle was up, or so it appeared.
Neesham's record was far from flattering, the club finishing
13th, 13th, 12th and 15th during the 4 seasons he was in charge.
Damian Drum has only managed to win 13 of the 50 games he has
been in charge of, with Fremantle finishing 15th in 1999, 12th in
2000, and looking like they will struggle to climb off the bottom
this year. By anyone's standards, these performances are simply
not good enough. It isn't really a question of if Drum will get
the sack, but when.
But, just sacking Damian Drum will not be Fremantle's miracle
cure. Not only do they need a quality senior coach, but also
everyone in the football department must be accountable.
This is a chance to fix any problems that might exist at the
Dockers, wherever they might be located. If the right structure
is put into place, with the right coach and a quality playing-
list, then on field success must surely come.
Now is the time for the Fremantle board to take a good hard look
at every facet of the football structure of their club, take the
hard decisions, and make changes that will bring long term gains.
Fremantle cannot afford to continue being a cellar dweller. To be
taken seriously as the second team from WA they need to win on a
more consistent basis, and to play finals.
The AFL needs a successful Fremantle ... now it's up to their
board to deliver.
