Round 7 v Essendon

Good to hear that Markov played well and got 24 touches. He hasn't shown the dash and flair that we saw last year, hopefully this is a turning point for his season. Him and Menadue will be important players down the track, their style of play is perfectly suited to our new free flowing game style.

I may or may not have gone yesterday. What I may have seen though was a much improved team performance with players possibly working hard for each other and they may have moved the ball on quicker than they were last week.

Lennon spent most of his time up forward with occasional runs on the ball and looked dangerous when the ball went near him.
Chol played a lot better than last week too. Covered the ground between the wings and the square and was constantly presenting as a target.
Miles may have got it 35 times but it wasn't a real damaging game, more of an accumulation of stats. Wouldn't be calling him up based on that.
Batchelor was a real general down back. Played a similar role to what Rance does in that he was the last man back and used his ability to read the play.
Ellis played on the wing this week and while he had a few nice touches he didn't get a heap of it, might have been because they played more through the corridor than the wings. Needs to do more work on learning where to run to be dangerous.
Stengle didn't notice him that much in terms of disposals/goals but he was always putting on pressure when the ball hit the ground inside F50.
The 2 Ivans weren't a big influence on the game. Won their share of hitouts and Soldo had a couple of crunching tackles but outside that not much.
Garthwaite would have been a contender for the medal. Was very Astbury/Grimes like in that he went about his game with a minimum of fuss and either spoiled or clunked anything that came near him.
Townsend played a similar role to Caddys last night. Was a threat up forward and could have ended the day with 4-5.

Now as I said above this may or may not have happened as I can't be 100% I was at the game, but rest assured I'll check with my sources and form a firm opinion based off what they tell me happened.

Apparently Chol kicked an absolute blinder from thr boundary today.

Yeh it was a great finish.

Ball kicked into an open forward 50, Chol put on the afterburners (very quick), picked up the ball in the pocket, and slotted it through on the left in pretty sure. Best thing I've seen him do.

Lennon kicked a couple whilst I was there and doesn't look like missing from around the 50 arc.

How good to grind out two wins after a horrible month of footy. The reports are in and good reading the positives. In the VFL it was good to see the tiges find the front at most contests and control their destiny, unlike last week at Willy. And i might say that they actually teamed and played FOR each other not just with each other, hard concentrated work to gain the 4 points. Also was good to see a huge crowd at PR to watch and support the boys! The Draft boys were good, Tyson continues to get fitter and more precise with his disposals and Garth is just starting to find his momentum and will only get better, for sure! Jack hopefully back in 2-3 weeks. Chol had a much better game and now must put 2 or 3 games together. INJ- Moore 3 weeks, Garth i think dislocated a couple of fingers going by the work done on the side lines, shouldn't be a worry he came back on in the last Qtr. Hope we build on this momentum and win more than lose from here on in and play finals in 2017, GO TIGERS.

Here is the actual report of the VFL and unlike to what I've been reading especially on Miles.
Lennon was pretty well beaten for the first half
Miles clearance work was terrific
Garthwaites interception marking was excellent and he provided a lot of run off the BL
Batchelor was best afield with a mini Rancesque effort.
Hunt played his usual game
Chol had some magic moments.

VFL Tigers claim Sir Doug Nicholls Cup

The VFL Tigers secured their third victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Essendon by 17 points in a curtain-raiser to Dreamtime at the ‘G.

Returning to Punt Road for the first time since their Round One victory over North Ballarat, the VFL Tigers narrowly trailed at the first and second quarter breaks, before putting on a scintillating second half display to bring home four well deserved points.

Jake Batchelor came away with the Sir Douglas Nicholls medal, with both coaches deeming his 23 disposal, seven spoil and six mark performance the best on ground for the day.

Richmond Development and VFL Backline Coach Ryan Ferguson sung the praises of the key defender, who he said wasted no time in establishing a dominant presence on the contest.

“He was outstanding from the first minute,” Ferguson said.

“He really held us up, structured us up, and his communication and organisation was absolutely unbelievable.

“From that, his contest really shone through. He rarely got beaten, spoiled some big balls and won some big contested marks.

“He was stellar down there.”

The fixture against the seventh placed Bombers got off to a tight start, with the travelers leading at the main break after the VFL Tigers booted the first three majors of the game.

Jake Aarts began proceedings with a crafty snap out of a tight pack, before a Mabior Chol special from 45 metres out stretched the lead to double digits.

Jacob Townsend then joined in the scoring action, gathering a loose ball from close range and rolling home a classy finish.

However, thanks in no small part to some tireless work out of the middle, Essendon managed to stem the tide of Richmond pressure and took a slender lead into the first break.

Young defender Ryan Garthwaite was valuable in the defensive third, bringing down a series of impressive intercept marks and sending the VFL Tigers on the offensive with his impressive rebound play.

Tom Silvestro, meanwhile, was endearing himself to the Tiger faithful with a spirited performance, chasing down every loose ball and providing relentless pressure to the Bomber’s midfield brigade, while Brandon Wood continued his impressive from from last week with a composed finish from close range.

While Ryan Bathie narrowly missed the chance to take the lead on the half time siren, it was a solitary point that separated the two sides at half-time, both of whom were relentlessly battling for the right to take home VFL Dreamtime bragging rights.

In what is often regarded as the ‘premiership quarter’ the Tigers brought their deadly finishing ability to the fore in the third term, as Bathie and Tyson Stengle both nailed their first and only goals for the day to snatch the lead back.

Ben Lennon, who had been well held by experienced Bombers defender Marty Gleeson, showed his class and experience with a clever finish from a tight angle, as the Bombers desperately tried to turn the momentum back in their favour.

After the Dons managed two quick goals, Wood and Lennon both scrapped to add another major to their own tallies, while Anthony Miles showcased his talent out of the centre, working his way up to 20 disposals at the final break, with four clearances and four tackles for good measure.

However the undoubted moment of the quarter belonged to Chol, who produced a stunning goal with seconds left on the clock to bring the Tiger lead to four goals at the end of the third quarter.

With a looping ball looking all but destined for the boundary, Chol showed extraordinary pace to keep a faint goal-scoring chance alive, before slotting an incredible left-footed effort in from the boundary, and showing the Tiger fans plenty of love in his celebration.

With Chol’s goal sending players and supporters alike into raptures, the momentum continued into the final stanza, where the VFL Tigers showed one more quarter of defensive expertise to bring home the chocolates.

The experience and composure of Batchelor and Steven Morris was on show for all to see, while Daniel Coffield and Hugh Beasley fought until the final siren to keep the Bombers at bay.

A third goal from Lennon and a well taken goal on the run from Miles went a long way in keeping the lead safe, before a late Corey Ellis goal sealed a memorable victory on a special night for the club.

Miles finished the game with an impressive 35 touches, while Oleg Markov's 24 and stand-in-skipper Jacob Ballard’s 23 rounded off a stellar team effort.

The VFL Tigers now look to next Saturday’s clash with sixth-placed Werribee, to be played at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Recreation Reserve.

Thought the whole backline for the tigers were terrific but when the game got tight in the last Maric who had been terrific all night just sealed it with two taps straight to our mids at the centre bounce that resulted in a goal and a fwd entry which sealed the game. Tigers were good in last as they were into a stiff breeze, good crowd and good game, finally a win for the fly after 4 losses away. Why is the next game in Beaconsfield?

Development and VFL midfield coach, Xavier Clarke provides an exclusive summary of the AFL and VFL-listed players from Saturday’s Round 16 VFL match against Essendon.

AFL LISTED PLAYERS

Anthony Miles

35 disposals, seven marks, seven clearances, six tackles, one goal.

A dominant performance with great numbers in disposals, clearances, tackles, and a nice goal to finish off the game.

Oleg Markov

24 disposals, six marks, two tackles, one clearance.

Probably his best game at VFL level. Looked really strong after bouncing back from a knee complaint throughout the week. Looked very dangerous rebounding off the half back line.

Jake Batchelor

23 disposals, six marks, one tackle.

Awarded best on ground for the match. He was fantastic with his intercept marks, leadership down back, and his direction of the troops down there. Really set the game up for us across the half back line.

Ryan Garthwaite

21 disposals, six marks, five tackles.

Had a pretty solid game. Did win a lot of the footy in the end, and is continuing to work on his bodywork with Ryan Ferguson (VFL Development and Backline Coach). He’s still learning his craft as a defender, and is looking like a very strong player at the moment. Also had one of his best tackle counts for the season which was pleasing to see.

Steven Morris

20 disposals, five tackles, three clearances, two marks.

Had a real physical impact on the game, winning the contest and getting the ball going our way. He’s a great leader and example on the field for our developing players.

Taylor Hunt

19 disposals, four tackles, one mark, one clearance.

Had a tagging role on Essendon’s Craig Bird, and had a very solid, consistent four quarter effort. Kept Bird to 14 touches and two clearances, while still having a good game himself. Played a very selfless role for the side which went a long way in us winning.

Corey Ellis

18 disposals, five tackles, four marks, one goal.

Was quiet in the first half, didn’t have quite as much dominance as we would have liked. His third quarter definitely stood out, and was rewarded with a goal in the final quarter.

Ben Lennon

18 disposals, seven marks, two tackles, three goals.

Was good again for the four quarter. Worked well with the other forwards and got a couple of goals over the back, which he worked very hard for.

Tyson Stengle

11 disposals, two marks, two tackles, one goal.

Probably a little bit quieter than the past few weeks. Fumbled a little bit early in the game, but finished strongly and was rewarded with a goal.

Mabior Chol

10 disposals, five marks, two tackles, two goals.

A lot better this week. Looked very lively, took some fantastic marks in our forward fifty, backed himself in and was rewarded with a couple of goals. Kicked a great goal on the run and celebrated with the fans, which was a highlight for the game.

Jacob Townsend

Nine disposals, five tackles, three marks, two goals.

Jacob’s first half was terrific, he looked lively and light on his feet. He was taken off at half-time to be the carry-over for the seniors, but he was very dominant in that first half.

Ivan Soldo

Eight disposals, 17 hitouts, three tackles, two marks.

Spent more time forward as he continues to learn his craft as a tall forward. Still had good hitout numbers when he went into the ruck and also tackled well.

Ivan Maric

Seven disposals, 30 hitouts, two marks, two tackles.

Didn’t have a lot of the footy, but set us up well around the stoppages. Put on a bit of a masterclass with Anthony Miles and our other midfielders providing clean clearance work.

VFL LISTED PLAYERS

Jacob Ballard

21 disposals, six clearances, four marks, four tackles.

Captained us for the day in the absence of Sam Darley. He relished the opportunity and took the game on, finishing with great numbers in disposals, clearances and tackles. He’s a great player for the footy club and continues to lead from the front.

Brandon Wood

19 disposals, five marks, four clearances, two goals.

Didn’t have as much of the footy as he probably would have liked, but did finish the game with a couple of goals, which was pleasing to see.

Ryan Bathie

18 disposals, four marks, one goal.

Gives us a good option up forward. Finished with a single goal but also took away another tall defender and was strong in the air.

Hugh Beasley

16 disposals, two marks, once clearance, one tackle.

Hugh complements our backline well. He has great leadership, excellent bodywork, and our backline of himself, Garthwaite, Batchelor and Coffield are starting to be very dominant for us, which is pleasing to see.

Daniel Coffield

16 disposals, four marks, three tackles, one clearance.

Having an excellent year so far. He continues to press each game and grow as a player, he backs himself in aerial contests and one-on-ones, and provides great rebound from defence.

James Fletcher

15 disposals, three clearances, two marks, one tackle.

Was good on the wing and spent some time in the midfield. Probably wanted the footy in his hands a bit more but he always gives us a great effort every game, and is proving to be very reliable.

Derek Smith

13 disposals, three marks, one tackle.

Played his first game for the footy club and looked very lively. Defended really well, and looks like he’ll be a good player in the future if he continues to play the way he did.

Thomas Silvestro

12 disposals, three marks, three tackles, one clearance.

A little bit quieter than usual in disposals, but his tackling running effort, and the way he covers the ground sets us up really well defensively. He covers a lot of players with his work rate, and they’re thankful for that.

Jake Aarts

10 disposals, three marks, three tackles, one goal.

Looked dangerous up forward, and has a crack every time he plays.

Jayden Cass

Five disposals, one mark, one tackle, one inside-50.

Played his first game for the footy club. Probably didn’t have as big an impact as he would have liked, but certainly looked lively up forward when he had the opportunity.

It wouldn't surprise me if Townsend eventually is tried as a forward option over a taller type in the ones.
He's s very natural forward and can mark in a pack or lead up.

Ok Jacob, if you say so.

Wouldn't mind seeing him played in a similar role to Caddy. He's been really good as a forward for a good dozen or so games now. I feel like his papers might be stamped, though.
