Autopsy Round 7 vs Saints rant thread

Roosy pointed out a really key structure of St.K on the couch. He showed a number of instances where Watters employed the tactic of 3 or 4 Saints players standing jut outside the stoppages so they cold block our turn and spread from the stoppages, namely Ray and Montagna and a couple of others. We just though we would win every stoppage and paid no respect to these players, hence they got free and made us pay. I am surprised the coaching staff let this happen all night.

Funny thing is that Port Power were doing this a decade ago when they were at the top end of the ladder & it worked very well for them.

It's a fairly obvious tactic, which probably works even better now with the number of players attracted to a contest & the way the umpires will let things go until the ball comes free.

Yeah it seems obvious, but why does Rats and the coaching staff let it happen? It gives a clear advantage to the opposition because they just outnumber us if we don't clear it effectively. They just monstered us at the clearances and we let them dictate play. When we get smashed at the clearances like we have the last few weeks the last thing we should be allowing is free players just standing of the contest.

Is this a coaching thing, or is it a matter of too many of our players being drawn into a contest? I'm confident the coaching staff are onto it, but aren't sure the players are following instructions.

We had it right for the first 3 weeks of the season, but perhaps there has been a bit much turnover in the midfield since then e.g. Carrazzo out, McLean in, McLean out, Ellard in, Judd out, Judd in, Curnow out, Curnow in, Lucas out, Lucas in, Lucas out. We haven't really had a settled midfield over recent weeks.

Yeah you're prob right, our turnovers have been so costly over the last few weeks. Our disposal efficiency in general is a concern. Far too often too many players are too lairy and try to kick low, fast, pin point passes that either miss the target or are too hot for the teammate to mark. Jeff and Muprh are the main culprits here, although when on song Murphy generally is one of the only few who can hit them with some consistency.

The depth in our midfield is somewhat of a myth. Obviously Carrots out really stings. He is an elite clearance player and stopper, but after Judd and Murph, we don't have any high quality mids who can get the job done on a consistent basis. Robbo, Ellard and Curnow are workman like, but far from elite.

This this this. Barker took the talented Saints 2007 forward to dysfunction, then managed to turn the Hawks 2008 premiership winning forward line into a shambles for 2009/2010. Certainly doesn't have too many runs on the board, and hasn't had a coaching contract renewed once in his career.

yep.

could not wait to see the back of Barker - completely rooted us up fwd.

Useless.

If you want to blame anyone for your rooted forward line that would have to have been Ross Lyon. I really wondered last year how a forward line which contained Riewoldt, Kosi, Milne, Schneider etc could struggle to consistently kick big scores.

Is it a coincidence that the Saints have already kicked 100+ points in a game 3 times out of 7 games this season, yet only did it 6 times in 23 games last season? Or that Freo have only kicked 100+ points once in the first 7 games this season?

In contrast, Carlton, with Barker as forward coach, kicked 100+ points 11 times last season & have already done so 4 times this season.

After watching the replay it stood out how well the opposition converted relative to us late in quarters. Wasnt able to find a time of score figure so the best i could do was the time left in each quarter, for the sake of the discussion, i defined late in the quarter as being less than 5 minutes left of playing time.

Q1
4:45 - Saints goal Milne
2:00 - Blues goal Judd
1:00 - Saints goal Milera
0:00 - Saints goal Ray

Q2
4:00 - Blues point Walker
3:15 - Blues point Russell
0:40 - Blues point Scotland
1:30 - Saints goal Milne
0:00 - Saints goal Saad

Q3
4:50 - Blues point Murphy
4:30 - Blues goal Ellard
3:45 - Blues point Murphy
2:10 - Blues goal Robinson

Q4
3:50 - Saints goal Stanley
2:45 - Blues point Hampson
2:20 - Blues point Ellard
1:10 - Blues point Gibbs

Total Shots Saints 6 Blues 11
Total Score Saints 6.0 Blues 3.8

Was staggering watching the replay how much this hurt us, had the momentum especially late in the 2nd and 3rd just couldnt convert and scoreboard pressure took its toll.

I've been saying it for more than a year now - Aaron Joseph is a potato of the highest order. He cannot stick a tackle, he's gutless, consistently beaten and cannot kick. He's like Bower's little brother.

Your a potato of the highest order. Needs some confidence and he'll be back.

Righto I have settled down a bit now.

For all the gnashing of teeth and rabid frothing about this loss, we actually had more scoring shots and could have won it if a couple of our better and senior players had stood up when it counted. Our lesser lights have largely taken the blame and its a bum rap IMO.

A) we seriously have some of the worst fans in the AFL. Doesn't take long for many to turn. And it seems everyone that 'turns' generally have no clue what they're talking about anyway. Embarrassing.

B) not sure if it's been mentioned, but we have a serious lack of understanding of a few basics. Especially around half back. How many times, not just last night, but consistently, can 3 defenders all go up and punch the ball, leaving an opposition crumber to waltz away as our blokes pick themselves up off the deck.
I understand you need to help your teammate out, but of you're going to leave your man on the ground, make sure the ball is fisted well and truly away from him.

C) noone can blame a team for losing if they give their all. Inconsistent effort should not be tolerated. Look at Mitch Robinsons game and then take one long, hard look at yourself.

D) why everyone we lose and Judd plays well are we called a one man team? That's disrespectful to the other few who did play well. Ellard, Robinson.

E) what's happened to our midfield? Last night playing the worst ruck combo in the league and we struggled badly. Hampson and Kreuzer are a great combo around the ground but IMO it might be time to test out Robbie. He's our best tap ruck and we need someone who can win it. If we're serious about this rotation policy, bring it into effect this week.

F) That was the best ever performance by a CFC sub. Back it up next week Dave

Bad performances aren't water off a ducks back any more if we want to be a contender.

Pretty disgraceful reading through this thread. As a result we are the laughing stock of bigfooty at the moment, everyone is talking about the great meltdown

We were exposed for pace in our backline while we are missing 2 of our key backline players, one of them our fastest

Murphy for the first time in history was tagged out of a game and now hes soft and weak?

Up until last night Gibbs was a star etc. We know hes not a Robbo type that belts through packs and gets his hands dirty, hes meant to be the 'Rolls Royce' isnt he? Didnt you nickname him that? A bad game and hes now a beat up datsun apparently

Just relax a touch. Hope everyone can come back next week and read this thread if we get up over Adelaide and you should realise how stupid and childish you are

Im not saying there arent holes, but we didnt need to lose a game to realise we arent a perfect footy side. We have lots to work on and we arent going to go from 1 finals to win premiership favourites instantly, and you shouldnt need a single game to tell you that either

You two are funny - you decide to knock your fellow supporters (in this rant thread) and then have your turn at ranting

Our weaknesses are the same as they were last year as are our strengths. Our strengths are better understood by opposition coaches as are our weaknesses. Challenge now is to improve on last year's best efforts - against Essendon and Saints we didn't - so we lost.

My only concern is that there might be a bit of denial going in in coaching staff - re clearances and some cluelessness to date re how to play against crowded contests.

I guess St Kilda result underlined the issues we are facing and ******* criticism of all and sundry associated with loss is expected outcome from fanboys.

Me I am a Carlton supporter who didn't think we would make top4 this year anyway - but still enjoys barracking for the Blues and the way we play the game.

My knock was to morons at the game who talk about Hendo being a spud, people saying we need Fev back and general comments that are just plain stupid. My rant was general comments about the team that we need to address if we want to win a flag. Quite different.

Fair enough but when you say that they do not know what they are talking about you can see that one might think that you are talking about posters ;)

This.

Some great team play in the third quarter of the Saints game. Murphy didn't put any body on his man Hayes who roves Hampson's centre square tap. Murphy not manning up makes it look like Gibbs the tackler was soft and second to the ball. Jones clears it and Russell has the ball covered, yet Duigan go backs to screw Rusty over and knock it St Kilda's way. Goal to Goddard. Next centre bounce, Murphy bodies Hayes to make up for his earlier mistake. Ball is tied up by Carlton before Russell gets it out.

Murphy didn't chase as hard as Tuohy as Jones rebounded to start the fast break that set up Stevens' third quarter goal.

Ditto AJ who should have let Henderson cover Milne because he was goal side. Joseph gave away an unnecessary free and a goal.

The run of 4 behinds in a row in the second quarter really hurt us. All of them gettable shots. Nail those & we go in at half time with a lead & our tails up. Instead in the 3rd quarter we find ourselves playing catch up football, missed a couple of more gettable opportunities & lose the quarter despite having the better of the quarter.
