Just watched the replay and can't really see what was wrong with Ibbo's game. Apart from his one mistake and there were plenty of those from everyone in the first half Ibbo did his job. I guess once you're branded a goat on here there is not much chance of losing the tag. He marked well, played on effectively and disposal was good.
I doubt Ibbo will lose his spot based on this game. I can't see any changes.

I actually almost posted something similar yesterday...

I didn't think he was that bad and read BigFooty afterwards. Didn't have time to re-watch the game so turned to the stat sheet.

Without looking again I think it was 14 disposals, 13 kicks, 100% efficiency (I do think it's a great stat but still).

So, are posters just fickle? I know Ibbotson is no Fyfe, but that doesn't mean he can't play a role. Do we have anyone who is definitively better? Really I think people just see what they want to see.

No changes it might be boys but ibbo spurry ur cut, Tucker ur cut. Langdon your also cut. Oh yeh Ralph cut.

It's hard to know, with everyone putting up good cases. I feel leave well enough alone. Who knows, Ross might bring someone in that they've got in mind like he did with brady and tabs. Both have had a huge impact. Or they might be practicing more patience.

The first quarter aside the only problem I had with both Ibbo and Spurr was the speed of their decision making. There were a bunch of moments where we had a fast break and they halted our movement forward completely.

Focusing in on Spurr as I thought he was pretty terrible. If you refer to the video from the 3rd quarter (http://bponlinewoc6264.ngcdn.telstr...-05-07_07-25-54-9397/output_2400kbps_720p.mp4) and jump to:
  • 4:30 - Spurr switches opponent with Brad Hill but just doesn't work hard enough to get back on Hurley. Hurley comes back on the overlap to receive the hand ball and kicks just outside 50 for a goal.
  • 5:30 - Essendon wins the clearance right up the middle, Spurr leaves his player to pressure the ball carrier but just wasn't fast enough to make any impact. Hand ball over the top to his opponent. Hand balls to Daniher who wheels around, breaks a tackle by Ibbo and kicks the goal. Watch the replay straight after to see the other angle and the massive gap Spurr left in our defence.
  • 8:00 - Spurr tackles Daniher who drops the ball (possibly htb?) but then holds on too long and gives away the free instead. We would have been away with 3 players around the loose ball. Daniher plays on and kicks deep. Spurr hits him late and gives away another free (downfield). Hooker gets a shot at goal from just outside the goal square. Questionable frees but undisciplined for a senior player either way.
  • 11:30 - Spurr gets drawn to the ball and leaves his opponent inside 50. Ball gets out to his opponent who has a shot at goal.
  • 13:50 - Spurr gets the ball on the wing in a heap of space. Could have hit a leading Kersten but can't execute the kick despite a heap of time. Just kicks out in front of him instead.
  • 16:15 - Spurr takes an uncontested intercept mark at half forward. Doesn't even look inside 50, just turns his back, wheels around and switches across and back to Hill. Was there an option i50? I don't know but he didn't even look.
  • 19:35 - Spurr in a 1-on-1 marking contest with Greene and loses. Plays on to M-TW who fumbles. Spurr misses the tackle and he kicks a goal. In fairness, Hamling didn't work nearly hard enough either.
  • 31:10 and watch Spurr receive the ball in the middle of the ground. If he had kept running forward on grabbing the uncontested mark the ground would have opened up for our forwards and he would have had plenty of options and time to hit someone inside 50. But he didn't, he held it up because he didn't back himself to beat the opponent running towards him and then all of players forward of the ball had to reset their leads and the opportunity for a late goal closed up and the ball ended up over the boundary not even inside 50.
  • 32:20 and Sutcliffe reads the play well and makes a nice intercept. Easy handball to Spurr who fumbles in a mountain of space. What should have been an easy take, look up and hit Hughes on the other wing to open up the ground and a repeat inside 50 entry became a disaster stuffing around our back line trying to move the ball, finishing with Sutty kicking it out of bounds.
That's just in one quarter. Did he do some good things in that quarter? I don't actually think there was anything else he was involved in during that quarter. Is that good enough for a senior player? I don't think it's good enough from any player tbh.

I want Collins into the back line because we look so nervous back there. We start games with temerity and for once I would just like a hard edge to the back line from the getgo, and I especially want it this weekend because Richmond as they've been playing this year will get the jump on us. Turnovers in our defensive 50 in the first half against the Dons killed us. We can't afford to let that happen again.

I would think if Ballantyne comes back and plays well, Crozier might become an option again across half back.
Can't see Crozier going back to the backline as he won't take the place of IBBO or the developing Hughes.

I agree with you that he can play a role Gav, but so can Pearce, Suban and Dawson. So could Barlow, DeBoer, Mzungu and Clancee.

I like Ibbo but I feel like he has gone way backwards from his heyday. That means either he is badly out of form and a stint at Peel might help him get that form back, or his best is behind him. If that is the case I'd rather see time put into a younger player.

That is assuming we are serious about rebuilding.

Anyone older than 24 years next year are not allow to play for peel, end of changes.

Spurr wont be dropped next week no matter how much effort you put into your analysis. Good case of analysis paralysis above.

I'm pretty certain Ross and co aren't eagerly lurking on here for insight for next week's selection :) A few people said Spurr played an ok game. I was just surprised how anyone at the ground watching could have said that nor anyone that watched the replay as I thought he was probably our worst. The excuse given was that Essendon's small forwards didn't get off the leash therefore all our small defenders did a good job (Ross said it himself). I think my more detailed analysis somewhat disproves that theory (would love to hear why anyone still disagrees). And hopefully whilst Freo is doing their review this week they notice this as well and it either shocks Spurr in to improving his game or potentially puts him on the chopping block when Ryan becomes ready in the coming weeks. He's part of the leadership team and has some credits in the bank from an earlier game or two but at some point we have to move on from a small defender without speed, without attacking flair and without good kicking skills (similarly with Ibbo).

Ibbotson, sutcliffe/tucker out and Collins and Ryan in. Ibbotson and even sutcliffe think they have all the time in the world when they have the footy and get caught out either holding the ball or panick and kick it to the other team. Tucker would be unlucky but didn't see him do enough considering his stats making it look like he did.

No change for mine. Our whole defence including the midfield was under pressure early. Ibbo only made one mistake when no-one in the team was making any space for him to kick to. He played a really good second half, along with Spurr.

Spurr won't get dropped. He is in the leadership group and is highly regarded by the players and coaching staff. He is the cool head of the backline and he may bomb it every now and then but he doesn't sit there and wait to be tackled or do a short little pass to the opposition and get a easy goal.

One of these days you'll realise that people on this board prioritise Freo over Peel. It's an amazing concept I know, but it's true ;)

Edited my post as Dump truck write a very good comment on why ibbo need to be replace.
