2021 is a year that has made little sense from the get go. Looking at the AFL landscape in general before the start of Round 8 only reinforces that world view. Melbourne 7-0? Jack Ziebell is the highest averaging forward? Tex Walker has somehow discovered a way to undo his status as the most cooked (like not even medium rare, this bloke was absolutely well done) key forward in the game and hot on his tail is a kent who has struggled to hit the broad side of a barn door for the first 5 years of his career. Former pigs Titch and Cripps seem to have lost their shine and the concept of a “forward premo” has been shelved into the archives as the aforementioned Ziegull perches himself high above the Dead Sea.

Usually by this point in the year all the optimism and excitement of a new SC season turns to despair as we realise we’ve picked all of the wrong premos, our benches are making about as much cash as the Greek economy and we’re all rolling down to the SC op shop looking for some scraps to get the likes of lazy fat headed spud Jimmy Rowe out of our teams and somewhere closer to the centre of the sun. A straight swap of Rowe for Heeney sounds like the type of trade Adrian Dodoro would bargain for in real life but in the mysterious and cruel world of SuperCoach, anything is possible.

Round 7 was a pretty depressing experience on the whole. Out of the 7 highest scoring players for the round, 6 of them had under 2% ownership and the list of failures is too long to mention. Dusty’s absence left most of us relying on the forward rookie potato farm while the usually reliable Max Gawn decided that he couldn’t play without his beauty sleep and singlehandedly dragged par down by about 150 points. Alas, to play SuperCoach is to be a masochist and here we all are again…
RICHMOND VS GEELONG
The Grand Final rematch is headlined by the return of a man who only really turns up for these games at this point. Dustin Martin has been 5 parts lazy and 15 parts underwhelming since his annual massacre of the Blues in Round 1 and the kent usually goes into hibernation for the winter – sounds much more like a bear than a GOAT to me. We were all sucked in by talk that Dusty had “fallen back in love with footy” or some other tripe during pre-season but we’ve all got him so hopefully he can pull one out. As far as other Tiges are concerned, Jayden Short was good last week after a flat fortnight but it is worth noting he is actually averaging less than Big Bad Bustling Bachar Houli…
Shai Bolton is another on many watchlists as a prospective trade in this week and with current injuries to Cotchin and the human meatball, looms likely as something resembling a solid forward option. Riley Collier-Dawkins was promising in his first game and will be watched closely again on Friday.
For the Cats, Tom Stewart has quietly gone about creating a 5 round average of 115 but it is the Cats midfield that is currently producing some sensational PODly goodness. In the absence of KOTDangerfield Cam Guthrie is absolutely rocking with an average of 121 to date while Mitch Duncan is only slightly behind him at 117. The biggest shock though is with the captain and former fabled SC SP Joel Selwood – after looking pretty cooked for the past 2 years he’s clearly gotten onto the same stuff as Tex Walker to deliver 5 tons and an average of 113. All 3 of them are currently under 10% ownership so if you’re looking to stand out…
GWS VS ESSENDON
Josh Kelly promptly responded to Judd_Magic trading him out to finally deliver a score worthy of his starting price tag. The punchable man known as Toby Greene has been largely solid this season without being spectacular but is currently in the top 5 forwards on average – given 2 of the players above him are dead he’s a valuable pick at under 500k. Tim Taranto finally decided to do some kicking practice at training last week on the way to 139 while in what appears to be a theme this season, the previously cooked Shane Mumford is averaging over 120 and, more importantly to the Giants, is undefeated so far this season. He’ll probably keep SP Flynn out of the team again but that won’t stop us cursing the Ferrari Driver all weekend.

Essendon’s Jordan Ridley has unfortunately continued to make himself available to the chasing pack – an underwhelming 87 on the back of his concussion-induced 31 leaves him with a breakeven over 200 this week and all likelihood of being very close to under 500k. Zac Merrett continued his good form with 107 despite the Curnow tag while Harry Jones kickstarted his previously non-existent cash gen with an excellent display of overhead marking. Dyson Heppell produced another good score for those with him instead of having another spud rookie on field.
GOLD COAST VS ST KILDA
The Suns have typically been SC irrelevant throughout their entire existence with the exception of GAJ so it’s nice to see them give us a couple of options! Touk Miller looks like an absolute bull so far this season and is quietly averaging in SP territory at present, while Jack Bowes evidently watched some videos of Jake Lloyd over the off-season to become Queensland’s number 1 gull. Last season’s favourite SP Greenwood ripped out a massive 142 last week but he is regrettably not likely relevant this year. Jy Farrar was a popular trade in last week but flattered to deceive with 43 – those with him will be hoping his role change to a KPD last week isn’t permanent.
Jack Steele has been a little disappointing recently after starting the season like a house on fire – he’s dropped 50k and has a breakeven of 166 this week making him a likely upgrade option when he dips under 600k. Hunter Clark was good but doesn’t seem to have a defined role making him a slightly risky pick, while the KOTD King of 2019 Rowan Marshall will be on everyone’s watch list to help bring us out of our forward line despair. Tom Highmore was everywhere in the VFL but there’s clearly a rule at St. Kilda where they aren’t allowed to have more than one player with a first name starting with T. If only his name was Jack…

How could I begin talking about North Melbourne without bringing up their fearless leader. The Pies are in a world of hurt at the moment (yes I know they still beat Carlton) but their $7 million man Brodie Grundy is about their only shining light. He put up 144 last week against the Gold Coast’s ramshackle ruck department and looms as a captain option again this week. Steele Sidebottom has a 3 round average of 99 but has actually looked pretty bloody ordinary, while on the rookie front Fin Macrae has unfortunately looked not a whole lot like Jackson across his first 3 games. He’s a chance to be dropped while Beau McCreery tackled his way to another score in the 50s and Nathan Murphy looms as a defence downgrade option.

Alright Max. I’m not going to roast you much this year but * me whatever that performance was last week deserves a cooking. After averaging over 140 through the first 6 rounds, the hipster bearded kent decided that he couldn’t play without a manicure, a mocha from some café in Brunswick and a power nap first and proceeded to dish up some bullshit in the 60s when a huge number of us had slapped the big C on him. You’re playing in Melbourne this week Maxxxy so you can sleep until ******* 10 minutes before the game as far as I’m concerned. 150 minimum flog
Clayton Oliver was good again with 116 while after an awesome 3 weeks Christian Petracca came back down to earth with a 78. His namesake Salem looms as a DEF SP this season with a juicy average of 106, while to May or not to May is the question on many coaches lips this week as Steven bottoms out at 409k following his 145. James Jordon solidified his place on our fields until the byes with a another great score.
The Swans blessed us with 3 incredible rookies to start the season but only one of them is still worth holding onto. Braeden (what the * kind of spelling is this) Campbell has already been dropped while Errol’s Gulden showers have turned distinctly bronze in recent times and he should probably be traded out if you are able to do. Chad Warner is chugging along okay and given the forward line nothingness is currently worth the hold. As for premos, Callum Mills was thrown back into defence last week by the AFL’s second most prominent magnet mover (sorry Bevo) while Jake Lloyd has quietly dropped nearly 100k from his starting price. I wouldn’t be touching Isaac Heeney with a 10 foot pole at this stage.
PORT ADELAIDE VS ADELAIDE
Travis Boak missed only his third game in what feels like forever last week but with an average of 115 and priced at 555k, he screams value. Aliir Aliir has been a great pick for those who started him while Dan Houston is leaking cash and carrying a shoulder injury. SP Miles Bergman delivered his best score of the season against the Lions and should go well again this week while Martin Frederick will be a popular trade in this week – assuming Kent doesn’t go full Kent mode and drops him.

On the other side of town, Rory Sloane should be back this week but Tex’s magical un-cooking act seems to have a limit of about 6 rounds. A combination of an old man injury and the bursting of the Adelaide bubble means his usefulness in our teams is coming to an end. He may get up for this one but the Crows have a rough month coming and it may be best to trade him now. Rory Laird has also dipped a little as the Crows have found the going harder while James Rowe should be traded out of all teams if for nothing else than the catharsis that will follow from looking at your team and not seeing him there. A potato, he is. Riley Thilthorpe is on the bubble but does not look to be suitable for many team structures.
HAWTHORN VS WEST COAST
The Hawks were poor against the Saints last week and Tom Mitchell is yet to reach his previously lofty SP heights with a season average of just over 100 and a 5 round average comfortably below it. He’s worth a watch ongoing but at this stage it looks like he needs 40 possessions just to crack the ton. For those that were intelligent/lucky/a combination of both enough to hold onto Jacob Koschitzke, he looks like approaching 300k which is a minor miracle following his performance against Geelong on Easter Monday. CJ was absent against the Saints with 49 while Jarman Impey was a bit under the weather with 74 – I would argue this score is more reflective of the influence he has on games but I’m a bitter kent that doesn’t own him
Shannon Hurn did his calf again at training putting the whole SC board on H2TYW watch but the Eagles are not really a super SC relevant side – Andrew Gaff has a 5 round average of 105 and Tim Kelly knocked up 42 possessions on the weekend but 131 looks like a fairly middling output for that level of performance. They did debut Harry Edwards over the weekend who was solid with 61 but his JS is very questionable.
WESTERN BULLDOGS VS CARLTON
The Dogs are probably the most SC relevant side in the comp with their deep midfield and possession orientated game. Jack Macrae had his worst game of the season and still dished up 107 – if you don’t have him find a way to get him in. The Bont delivered the same score and has produced 4 tons in a row – it’s hard to look away from a man whose KOTD rivals almost no other. Adam Treloar continues to make Collingwood’s list management team look ridiculous while Caleb Daniel posted his first ton since round 1. He’s bottomed out now with a BE of 51 and may be worth a look for those not interested in… May. Anthony Scott somehow held his spot through the first 5 rounds and has actually turned into a decent cow – go figure.
If you’re going to own any Blue, let it be Sam Walsh. The former number 1 draft pick posted his third score over 130 in a row and has taken over the mantle of the Blues’ most influential midfielder from Patrick Cripps, who sadly looks all degrees of cooked at the minute with only one ton so far this season. He looked like he moved better in the last term against Essendon but I think the only reason his ownership remains so high is due to the ridiculous injury carnage we’ve had so far this season. His co-captain Sam Docherty is averaging a tick over 100 and remains a solid pick down back. I sincerely hope nobody still has Paddy Dow

BRISBANE VS FREMANTLE
Does anybody have Jarryd Lyons? Averaging 116, 1.8% ownership and a tick over 600k screams uber POD and someone we should be jumping on if possible. The Suitcase Hugh McCluggage has been awesome for the last 4 weeks and seems to be taking on some more responsibility in the centre square with Lachie Neale currently out. Daniel Rich continues to gull and launch bombs from half back while Dayne Zorko looms as a forward upgrade target. He’s currently averaging 94. Joey Daniher is on a hot streak that looked unlikely following his disaster in Ballarat while Deven Robertson was solid with 69.
The evergreen David Mundy tonned up again and the question is mostly around “how long can this last?”. Superstar and SC board favourite Nat Fyfe hasn’t been parked forward the way he was when he got injured since returning and also hasn’t dropped under the ton since then either – he’s currently averaging 114 and the injury to Adam Cerra seems to be preventing Justin Longmuir from too much magnet moving. Andy Brayshaw was a popular trade in last week and rewarded coaches with a 121 while Luke Ryan is currently deep into his natural annual burning shenanigans. To be expected from a flog who previously bleached his hair blonde because he likes Justin Bieber. He could learn a lot from his young teammate Heath Chapman, the rookie stud braving a dislocated shoulder to prevent us from getting a single digit score before being sent for surgery and promptly slaughtered.
