Before the season I had this one down as one of our few predictable wins - but now that we’ve defied everyone’s expectations and got to 4-1-2, this game all of a sudden gives me the shakes - have I got Essington-itis? 😕
Yes. We all have it.

This is a 50/50 game make no mistake about it, esp the way they put freo to the sword 2 weeks ago. For once the post Anzac Day fixture has smiled on us & we’ve got 3 days on them, so we should be sharp from the get go.

Really hope we treat them with the respect they deserve or they’ll beat us….simple.

We've only been convincing against WB. Scraped home v. Crows. Draw v. Pies. We're not convincing even if we finish the weekend in the top 4. IMO, if we beat GWS, then we can really start believing.
On the flipside I'd say we've fought remarkably hard for all our wins so far.
I don't think you can judge a team off of any one win or loss - our 7 game sample size tells me we're a team that's building. Regardless of the result tonight, or against GWS, or Port 4 weeks ago, I don't think we're anywhere near the calibre of Geelong yet - which is the benchmark, but I trust we're on the right track.

That being said, something about our team and draw reminds me a bit of Adelaide 2012...

While I'm happy with just the 4 point win, this is a game that we can correct our messy percentage.

If we can get in fromnt, i'm hppy keeping the foot on the throat and piling on a score.

No resting blokes come the last quarter - they've had 9 days off.

Definitely the character of a rebuilding side. Not the convincing wins of a top 4 side.

disagree with this, it’s the close games that makes a top 4 side. winning those tough games that could go either way is a far better indicator for how good a team is, vs thumping shit clubs

I didn't say anything about thumping s*** clubs, though top 4 sides do that regularly too and we haven't started doing that either. IMO, a solid top 4 side beats 5-8/9 sides convincingly; 5-6 goal margins. A top 4 side should be playing those close margin games against other top 4 sides generally, and perhaps against the sides in 5th or 6th on occasion.

What does coach say -
Not about who we’ve played, scoreboard etc
It’s about are we improving more than the competition?
I’m pretty happy across
  • Better game style
  • Edging (especially when it pissed Papley off)
  • staying focused when opposition get on top (bar the port debacle) has been great
  • Player improvement across a bunch of 2nd tier group
  • player depth

Plenty more needed to be a credible top 4team. But pretty happy overall.

I expect WCE to be still in it in the 3rd.
Don’t think the current attitude from Essendon let it be a loss.

Yep. I'm looking for consistency in effort and application across four quarters. We weren't consistent with this against Adelaide; I haven't yet finished watching ANZAC Day, but I know we gave up a five goal lead. If we bring last weeks first quarter intensity over 4 quarters against WC, we fly home with a 10 goal thumping to our credit.
