Hi all,
It's been a while (since the round five UHSOB win), but it's back, the Fitzroy Reds match review. I hope you enjoy!
EIGHT STRAIGHT FOR THE RAMPAGING RED MACHINE
The Fitzroy Reds unbeaten run continued at the East Caulfield Reserve on Saturday as they easily accounted for the Monash Gryphons, getting up by a comfortable 88 points. On the smallish ground, the Reds were able to exploit the Gryphons with their additional speed and better employed system. The marking game up forward that has been the Reds trademark was down a little,
notably through the absence of Jezza at centre half forward, however Willy Ronke and Shane "The Lip" Podito tried hard. As usual, the Reds "No Name Brand" defence was harder than M------ J------ at a children's party, repelling the numerous opportunities the Gryphons had. Suprisingly, it was the Reds runners that led the day in dampish conditions, continually getting the ball forward to create opportunities.
The match started off in a pretty scrappy manner. Both sides struggled early to come to grips with the blustery wind and choppy ground. It wasn't long, however, before the Reds began to set up some chances up forward. Inside 50's were pretty even for the term, however it was the Reds who were able to convert the chances that did arise, goals being kicked by Mush Jackson, Willy Ronke and Hot Dog Mitchell in this quarter. Normally a player who goes upforward towards the end of the game, Mitchell was lively on a half forward flank, taking a number of marks on the railway line side of the ground. Coach Graham Burgin believed the side should've been up further at quarter time, however the Peanut Gallery (Mobbenführer, Slax and Vince Sorrenti) thought the Gryphons weren't too bad, maybe just lacking a little of the
Reds polish. In a pretty ordinary quarter of football, the Reds lead by 20 points at the first change.
The game didn't change too much after the first change. Again, the Gryphons had the ball upforward regularly without converting, but when the Reds did go forward they looked dangerous. Willy Ronke the Goal Factory was leading and marking strongly at full forward, the Reds equivalent to Matthew Lloyd (well, Peter Sumich anyway) as a left-foot glamour full forward. Mush continued his good form on the ball, setting up a number of chances upforward, as well as kicking two himself for the quarter. One memorable goal occurred at the Uni end of the ground. Buried deep (sic) in the pocket, Mush was waiting for a chance to present itself in the forward line. After what seemed an eternity (at least 30 seconds) Mush stopped waiting and off two steps, calmly placed the ball between the big sticks, prompting a big response from the crowd. OK, I heard somebody say "woo-hoo", but considering the wind, it was a good goal. Captain Steve Drury was great across half back, taking a lot of marks and clearing to Reds teammates. A 43-point lead at ½ time was an indication of the game thus far. Monash were trying, but trying won't get you too far against the Reds unless you convert every
chance you get.
In previous match reports, I have commented on the Reds traditional slow starts after ½ time. I cannot comment on the start of the third term because, well, we were still at the pub. In fact, we only saw about 10 minutes of the third term. And in that time, we saw rain and football being played in rain, which kept the skills to a bare minimum. One player who stood out in this quarter, in fact for most of the game was number 70, according to Friz' player list, S. Dibendetto. For most of the game, he was hard at the ball, getting the leather a fair bit and using it to the teams
advantage, plus he kicked one of the Reds three goals for the quarter, Hot Dog and Willy kicking the other two. Reds by 64 points at the final change.
The last quarter was, as has been the case all season bar the Bentleigh match, a mere formality. While the Gryphons didn't stop trying, they couldn't hold up the Reds. Another four goals to one in the last quarter was a nice little bonus as far as percentage is concerned. Warfey got a fair bit of the ball in this quarter, and like Billy Clinton, looked highly polished whenever he got the footy. As mentioned previously, he is the missing triplet in the Scott trilogy of Brisbane fame. This quarter again demonstrated how underrated the Reds defence is, with Drury and Teflon
Clarke clearing everything that came into their area. As anyone in footy will tell you, a good backline is the base for any decent footy side. By the time the siren went, we were surprised to see we had an 88 point win. A bit like the South Melbourne game earlier this year. It wasn't a steamrolling thumping, merely a case of us scoring a few goals each quarter and the Gryphons only kicking two for the game. Not that there's anything wrong with that!
