Preview Round 8: Saints vs Crows

I see the game the same way it was played last time in SA. Adelaide midfield was on top with superior run and our midfielders providing next to zero defensive pressure which led to the ball entering their inside 50 at will. We were very good the other way however and somehow got within 6 points.

Our midfield and back 6 are in better shape and working a lot harder evidenced by last weeks effort and generally since the latter half of last year.

It's never easy playing interstate against home town bias but I feel Adelaide are going to need to find another way to win this time. I'd be quite disappointed if their mids ran rampant again as that's where I feel the game will be won or lost for us.

I don't think jones is missing cause of DE, it's his lack of score involvements.

Either he isn't tagging anymore, so you'd expect him to drive the ball forward as a midfielder and start the scoring chain.

Or he is responsible for someone, and there should be a willingness to hurt them the other way.

That would be my guess for his omission late last year, and now again.

Have to remember it was a much more experienced lineup we sent over to Adelaide last year. Blake, Gram, Goddard, Schneider, Lenny, maybe CJ are some of the names that are out. Geary was the sub to put it in perspective.

I like this from the "Crows boost squad" article on www.saints.com.au

Matthew Jaensch, Ricky Henderson and Ian Callinan have all been brought into the squad, with no omissions from the team that comfortably defeated Greater Western Sydney last week.

I wouldn't mind comfortably defeating a few sides like that

I also like that, at the very top of this thread where you can basically go "previous thread" or "next thread", the previous thread (on my screen) is titled "ICQ" Helloooooo 2001

Anyway, onto more pressing matters. I can never tell who should get a game and who shouldn't. I think calls for Milne to be dropped might be overly dramatic, or maybe I am not as harsh on the guy as I should be

We did a lot right in the game against Carlton, first half especially. Unless the selection committee saw much going awry in the front half, I suspect someone like Jones or Dunell will come in for Wright, and that's about it

Considering a 25 man squad v a 22 man team...

OUT: Gram, Clarke, Schneider, Goddard, Gilbert, Koschitzke, Blake
IN: Hickey, Ross, Newnes, Roberton, Stanley, Ray (and possibly Webster, Dunell, Maister)

Look at the outs. The youngest and most inexperienced of that group were Clarke and Gilbert - both over 25 and around the 100 game mark.

Now look at the ins. All except Ray were not at the club in 2011. Maister and Ray are 27, Stanley and Dunell are 23, and the rest are under 22.

It happened quickly, no?

True dat. It's certainly unlikely to be easy for us. In that game Kurt Tippett tore us (mainly Blakey) a new one though, kicking 5 goals and Taylor Walker and Porplyzia kicked another 5 goals between them as well. Of those 3, only Porplyzia may be playing this week and he's apparently horribly out of form and may even get dropped for this one. So that's a big chunk of their goals from that night. Will need to keep a close eye on Jenkins this week though, as he has the potential to kick a few, being that big, tall, strong unit.

Also worth remembering that that game was Mac's first game in 7 weeks (had just 19 hitouts, 2 marks, 2 kicks), Fisher's first in 6 and Schneider's first full game of the year (although he had a good one), which wouldn't have helped them.

Gee, I didn't think they announced them this early. Have to say, as much as I think Jones ought to be playing and would like to see Dunell given another crack, I really do prefer the Roo, Beau and Hickey set-up in the forward line. Will be very interesting to see where we play Siposs, if we do go with those 3 up there.

So who is likely to be sub?
Ray? Webster ( again )? Ross? Saad? Milne?
Siposs another option, if Beau comes in, as he will likely be playing the position Arryn generally was last week. Doubt very much it will be Ross and Saad was a lot better on the weekend, I thought. Wouldn't have thought so, but perhaps Webster again.

Great "final" team. Not sure why they named Maister on injury list when he was always going play.

if you listen to scotty on 5aa yesterday, to me I will be surprised if Jones gets into the team.

and i was right as i see the team has just been named.

Well we'd be due, gone the last three weeks without a late change IIRC.

With that side in Siposs makes the most sense as sub. Too top heavy with him being in there as well.

Last week we had Jones out for Ray. Week before Lenny out for Newnes (that was last minute change though so probably doesn't count!)

Siposs would be a good option for the vest. Can play in a number of positions, so we have good cover in case of injury and there's question marks on his ability to run out a full game so starting as the sub should help.

I still think the most likely need for a sub is that one of the younger midfielders will be run of his legs or ineffective.
Then it makes more sense to have a midfielder as sub.

We've got Wright out. Which means that Geary will probably play back there ( unless Sippo does ).
So we are already one midfielder down on last week ( to overload our forward line again ).
If we lose a mid to injury ( the majority of players are mids ) we bring in Sippo?

Thats why I'm not a big fan of Maister in for Wright. Its going to overload our midfield.

Finally someone mentions numbers in the midfield. So rare. :thumbsu:

Completely agree. My mail is that Maister wasn't playing this week for either Sandy or Saints. for that reason I think we will bring in CJ to replace him. Blakey is fit enough to miss a week and not be affected so he will travel with the team. Dunnell is in the same boat to a degree but I also wouldnt be surprised to see him come in....

Roo
Maister
Hickey
Siposs
Milne
Saad
Milera

Too many forwards for mine. If we're fair dinkum something will have to give there, if not two of them. Almost have as many forwards as mids.
Wouldn't surprise me to see us try Siposs on HB/Wing again and Milera will play more up the ground if not the sub IMO.

I'm not a big fan of that TBH. I prefer mids to play in the midfield who are capable of winning contested ball which isn't a strength of those two. Like SS said before we're just needlessly stacking the forward line, and getting away from a structure that had us right back up there in the contested ball stats. Not really sure why.

Siposs on a wing then pushing forward when Hickey goes into the ruck wouldn't be the worst thing, but I'd prefer only one of that type.

Don't see anything particularly out of whack about this team, which is how we'll probably line up if we don't make any changes:

B: Gwilt Stanley Newnes
HB: Roberton Fisher Dempster
C: Dal Santo Armitage Montagna
HF: Saad Riewoldt Milera
F: Milne Maister Hickey
R: McEvoy Geary Steven
I: Ross Ray Siposs Webster

Ross and Ray would rotate through the midfield and Siposs would rotate through whichever spot is available (taking the spot of whoever has come off for a rest) on either the forward line or backline, or occasionally on the wing. Webster to be subbed on whenever. Alternatively, we could swap Siposs with Newnes.

Doubt we'll go in with this team though. Think there will probably be at least one change, but I'm not worried about that team above, if we don't, due to how versatile Siposs is.
