What I personally would do if I was Ratts... would be collect up all the newspapers from when they were touting us as premiership favourites and then get all the boys together... and roll up the newspapers and start flogging the shit out of the boys with them.

They seem to be spending more time admiring themselves in the mirror and believing all the hype in the newpapers about us than they are about putting in the hard work and getting the results on the ground.

I think that the players all think that they just need to show up to win matches at the moment and cant be arsed putting in the hard work.

After todays piss weak effort... I would also be including a **** off big iron rod in the middle of the newspapers.

Sorry... todays effort is all down on the players. Ratts was making wholesale changes around the ground when I finally got to see the last quarter and a bit... but the players mindset was 'put the cue in the rack' and we lost it completely at that point.

A couple of players were good... but on the whole... the lot of them needs a ****ing good roast. And I hope that Ratten and Sticks gives them the spray that they deserve behind closed doors.

I think the MC may have believed we are as good as the media and bookies make out

Yarran is in our best 21. If he is not fit he does not play surely?
Today we thought we would make him Sub because we thought we might be able to beat Adelaide with 21 men (and not need Yazza)

:eek::eek::eek:

He has a point Mods.

Ratts is the leader of our club so questions should be asked when required...

Absolutely we continue to under achieve and we are now going backwards, the buck stops with him.

Question would any club try and poach ratten?

Answer that question and you will see why we need to keep all options open.

Judd is 28 we can't afford to waste this year something must change.

It had become evident that we have multiple problems at our football club.

Firstly, our brand of "speed" football focuses on running the ball quickly and burning off our opponents. However, this neglects the fact that you need to win the contested ball first to have possession. I dont know how much emphasis they place on training at winning the contested ball in messy, scrappy packs, but that is one of our major weaknesses. Week after week we have players who are too far away from the actual contest and are waiting for a handball receive. Contested football is not about perfect possession and perfect passes to teammates. It is about going in hard to win the ball and hunting the ball in packs. It seems Carlton is content to think that having one or two players going for the ball is fine. It is very evident that his does not work.

Secondly, our tactic of using "speed" requires us to have pinpoint accuracy in handballs and kicks. This has led to the overuse of unnecessary sideways and backwards handballs. Multiple times we handball it backwards or sideways instead of the player with the ball just running forward or kicking it forward to advantage. Many times in the game those sideways/backwards handballs put the receiver under immense pressure and more often than not resulting in the Carlton player losing the ball resulting in a turnover or having another stoppage.

You only play as well as the opposition allows you to play. A game plan revolving around speed will not beat a game plan revolving around winning the hard, contested balls. As cliche as it may be, we nearly all the team plays like millionaires expecting those perfect handballs and perfect kicks all the time. But what happens when those kicks are in a contest or under a bit of pressure? We more often than not lose the ball.

Are Adelaide or st kilda notably fast teams? No, but they have players who WANT the hardball and not the easy handball receive.

North, Cats, Saints, Bombers, Pies, Adelaide all have new coaches in teh last couple of years and are on the way up, Tigers are also on the way up - while sydeny eagles and hawks aren't going anywhere.

IN two, three years you will also have GWS or Gold Coast with their plethora of stars playing well.......our window is well and trully on the way down.

Is this another crystal ball call?

Why are our players with 6, 7, 8 years in the system skinnier and less physical than Essendon's and Adelaide's? Carrazzo was one of our few big bodied, genuine hard nuts in the midfield - surely his loss can't even come close to explaining the debacle since round 4?

I'm not sure what's happening. It saddens me to think that our oh so painstakingly crafted game plan has been so easily countered by the opposition.

I don't like changing coaches. It sets you back 2 or 3 years. But questions need to be asked. It's been 4 weeks and we're still being belted in the clearances, an aspect of our game that's been our strength.

I'm not sure how sincere he was but to hear him blame the loss against the Saints and intensity and not something wrong with the way we structure was worrying to say the list.

One more thing: why do we, more than any other top 6-8 team in the competition, seem to rely on our individual talent rather than structure to get us over the line? WC have an injury and somebody stands up and fills that role within the team. Why doesn't it happen at Carlton?

I've been incessently positive for years. Quiet optimism is no longer the order of the day. We are at the stage where we should be challenging for the flag - expectations both external and internal to the club. If we don't make the top 4 this season serious questions need to be asked and Ratten's job as coach assessed.

Pretty much sums it up.

Watson has now got the body but is not good enough and McCarthy was TERRIBLE - we have no replacements

Nevertheless, I think it's time we bit the bullet against Melbourne. Their development isn't progressing rapidly enough at Northern.

Carrying a 19yo kid against the bottom side isn't going to influence the result - the other 21 players need to pull their fingers out.

It is time for one man to stand up next week, and physically decimate a weak Melbourne next week.

ENTER BROCK MCLEAN

Next week opening bounce should be Judd, Robinson, McLean on ball, and just smash in and with the clearance.

Needs to happen.

OUT: Tuohy(been beaten the last 3 games), Russell, Murphy(inj), someone else
IN: McLean, Buckley, Lucas, Waite

Mclean is a great VFL player, he is not the messaiah, he's just a VERY slow boy.

And yet howls of protest for playing an underdone Yarran.

I say this in the most level headed way possible.
Our season is finished.

Pathetic Blues. Never been so disappointed.

Not quite, but makes it difficult. With Melb and Port in the next two weeks and then the four weeks after that we have Geelong, West coast, Hawthorn and Collingwood, I can for see that leaves at 7-7, then the year is finished.
I have lost faith and truly think that we have gone completely backwards the year.
Top 4 material.......my arse!!!!

Funny how much can change in 6 days. On Monday we were playing for a top stop and now we are 7th and have dropped about 30% in percentage

So North are on their way up despite losing a game in which they led by 32 points to last year's second bottom side.

The Cats are gradually going backwards. To be expected given their recent retirees & the age of their list. Saints are no better than last season. In fact are probably also going backwards due to the age of their list.

The Pies are still well behind where they were at in 2010 & the majority of 2011. A new coach is not a guarantee of success.

getting smashed in clearances from stoppages(again)and some einstein in the coaches box leaves robbo on the fwd flank tagging reilly, wtf.who the hell tags that hack and i dont care what hes done the last few weeks,at least put a nothing player on him like russell, you dont rob your midfield for that nothing move.amazing how we won some ball in the middle when he went in there albeit too late

It sounds like a really basic point but an analysis of the players weights and you really see how undersized we are. 10 players that played today are listed as 85kg or less: Garlett, Betts, Armfield,Ellard,Simpson, Murphy,Scotland, Curnow, Yarren, Gibbs (Robinson + Russell are listed 86kg). Not to mention that I can think of other taller players who are skinny: Henderson, Thornton, Bower.

Now I am not suggesting that every player here needs to bulk up, infact there are players here who definatley shouldn't/couldn't. But my point is that as a group today we looked small and Adelaide strength and size through their hips overwhelmed us.

Do we need to sacrafice some pace for size?

P.S: I am quiet aware of the innacuracy of the stats on players heights and weight but that does not negate my point.

We are a tactical basket case. Seriously, opposition match committees must rub their hands together in the week they play Carlton...

The amount of times we go to a double-teamed Betts - one of the shortest players in the AFL - as our forward entry is just unforgivable. Hampson and Kreuzer are constantly caught in no man's land down there (Kreuzer especially, he is little more than a witches hat in the forward line).

Our so called running defenders seem confused when the slightest bit of pressure is applied to them, and often run around in circles before choosing to kick short along the boundary to a teammate under extreme pressure. Apart from Jamison, our rebound from the backline is non-existent (ridiculous decision to play Yarran as the sub; sub him off if he's too tired). We have lost all imagination and creativity with our kick-ins, whilst we seem to concede our entire forward 50 when the opposition kick in and gift them metres.

The midfield setup is atrocious; well-drilled midfields simply punch holes in our 'structure' at will.

Also, another poster identified this recently, but we never man the mark properly (Duigan excluded). Whoever is on the mark just starts floating back half-heartedly and allows his opponent to kick under no pressure.

Serious questions need to be asked of the coach, we are cannon fodder for any coach with an ounce of tactical imagination.

Agree with most of this but Robinson mans the mark ferociously. Spends his time doing star jumps while glaring at the opposition.

ellard at 100kg????.......got a few tackles as always today

Sorry, Thy. I know this is the rant thread but I'm channelling my depression into something creative. ;)

We had only two genuine KPP out there today. That's one reason we kicked only 3 goals after quarter time.

Our structures have failed. No Rowe or o'hAilpin to step up. Investing in the future is our best hope.

In the preview thread during the week, I said a big cloud that you could smell the stench of was nearly upon us, well let me tell you ladies and gents, it's right over visy park right now with not a breath of wind in sight to blow it away anytime soon, I hoped in hope it self that I was wrong, but my footy instinct and sense told me otherwise, iv been a loyal man to my beloved club, enduring the dark years and still signing up for a membership knowing wooden spoons were more likely than wins, but I kept telling myself "the wheel will turn mate hang in there" add to that the club gloating and sucking people in(I don't give a damn who this offends because this is what the club has done) to the cause that we will be a good side(top 4 mentioned openly at the club this year yes?) when in fact we are a good average side, no more no less, people saying the bombers list is a joke and that we are so far ahead of them it's not funny and shit, oh my hat  I must admit I even thought some of what was being said about the dons was right, but in the real world it was my own teams list that was staring me right in the face that is mediocre (Carlton arrogance does blind fold, even myself ) I still believe we need to hit rock bottom before we can start the improve of out put of this group (no we have not hit rock bottom yet, it's not far away though people ;) )when we realize that football games are won by respect for your opposition and by hard uncompromising football (ref that joke side people referred to here, the team we played today) maybe just maybe we might be able to start to get some respect back and maybe a win or two, because right now we are the laughing stock of the AFL, we are going to cop it by everybody and you know what, good, it's totally warrented so suck it up fellow blue baggers we are in for a bumpy ride.

Obsolete game plan plus injuries plus loss of confidence equals today's crap.

Our list is so much better than this , hurts like hell.

Listening to malthouse breakdown what was going on was sensational, wonder if we could hire him on a consultancy basis.

Haha on friday night malthouse predicted at 3 quarter time that the flood gates were going to open in collingwood's favour and it didn't happen did it? Malthouse is an ego maniac and a very overrated football coach. I pray that if ratten is to be replaced that we stay well away from him. I actually want pagan back, but that won't be happening so I say get leigh mathews

Settle Azul - next you will be blaming Hyde - did you see the team of babies he had yesterday?

Cool. In future please use my full username. I have been lumped into "the clique" by the raging, disenchanted mob and don't wish to seem part of any exclusive posting block.
