Watched Sharp pretty closely on Saturday night as he played the wing I was sitting on. I thought he did ok but could probably have gathered another half a dozen disposals if he put the foot down to get in a better position. At this point players won't give it to him if there are other options. What I mean is they are reluctant to give a 5m handball as they feel they are better suited to take the risk with the kick. I found myself calling out (like they can hear us ) "Keep going Motty you will get it again!" I think he has the fitness to go that little bit harder and with more games under his belt his confidence should continue to increase. For the sake of his development, it wouldn't be terrible if Rich wasn't able to get back till after the bye.

I also thought Motty played very well and think he is a better half back than winger at this point.

I think we as a team just prefer to kick over handball. We can see in plenty of other team’s games where overdoing handballs leads to turnover or stoppage. Sharp got 17 touches which is about the same Berry has averaged all year. He hasn’t used it as well but that comes with more experience. The thing I noticed a couple times was the extra running to provide a short option. It’s something Dunkley did a lot last week that helps gain territory and break the opposition down.

Bust out the traditional “Ryan Lester One Year Contract Extension” NOW!

Thanks Dalions - it was worth editing.
If we thought the Ashcorft boys are something, i reckon Froggy's boy could be potentially be one of the best with his wife being Zorks sister.

Should we put this boy on the watch list 3KZ ROFL:p

I agree, don' think it would be terrible if Rich was not ready until after the bye. Crows have some relatively fast smalls and I feel also Wilmot is going very well at half back.

more and more impressed with payne's ball usage as the season rolls along

as much as i liked adams it was heart in mouth stuff when it came time for him to kick a footy. gardiner is prone to howlers as well

payne has a nice field kick for a kpd and whilst usually opting for conservative options, is consistently making (and properly executing) the right decisions with ball in hand.

Wilmot is a halfback by trade, no? Pretty sure he’s just playing wing because we have an abundance of halfbacks. If prior doesn’t stick around I can 100% see Wilmot taking Rich’s spot in the backline if he retires

Apart from that 30m kick to Andrews which missed him by 20m almost cost us a goal on the weekend

Twenty metres? Payne’s kick wasn’t a good one, but Harris could have done a bit more. I actually think he wasn’t expecting it. Almost every time Harris marks that, despite the kick being too strong. As I say to the U11’s - “get into position and use both hands.”

From a pass to Harris chest to where Payne kicked it was prob a 20m miss.

As soon as we tried to slow it down to that extent I knew we were about to suffer a terrible turnover. We do it every time.

The coaches need to coach the players on how to safely implement a slow down. We seem to send kicks to places that you wouldn't do in your right mind when you're trying to score , and we take slow down to mean slow your delivery , which leads to lazy ,slow off kilter kicks. And gives the opposition time to crowd you up and even intercept on occasions.

We're often more precise and accurate with our kicking when trying to launch an attack than when we slow it down. The idea of a slow down is that you eat up time and most importantly don't lose possession . Which means precise accurate kicking is more crucial. It doesn't have to be backwards . Just to a loose player who then takes his 30 seconds. Unless he spots another loose player in kickable distance. When we slow down we slow down mentally when you actually have to be more mentally alert.

100% on the bolded.... and it affects our intensity on defensive pressure as well which is a bigger problem IMO.

And its not the first time, and nor will it be the last. A similar missed backwards pass occurred in the Carlton game in the last quarter with Dunkley and Andrews.

As soon as you see them start chipping it around, by about the 4th or 5th kick, you get the feeling that they are going to cough it up and the opposition score.

This is the key for mine. It's like boiling a frog. It swims around happily till the water warms up to a comfortable temperature and falls asleep. And never wakes up. That's what playing this low tempo possession football reminds me of.

The key is maintain the same purpose as you would if you were hellbent on scoring. There's no reason logically why you can't play possession football with exactly the same purpose, even though I understand it from an emotional perspective.

All you're doing is making different decisions with ball in hand and where to run to to receive. There's no reason you can't do that with exactly the same vigour you would if you were trying to move forward.

It's funny also how the most low risk plays are actually the most risky, and vice versa. That kick from Dunkley to Andrews only missed by a couple of metres, but was enough for Carlton to kick an easy goal. On the other hand, kicking up field to a 50-50 marking contest on the wing makes you far less likely to concede a goal, even though you're far more likely to lose possession.

"The greatest risk is not to take one."

Harris did pretty well to mop it up actually.
And Payne come to his aid to get the handball receive that got him out of trouble.

I think it's the second time in a couple of weeks where there's been a chip back only for the recipient to be completely unaware that the ball might be coming back. It looks worse than it is, but they really should be staying aware of the situation.

A big problem (to me) about our chipping game is that we leave it to literally two or three of the worst ball users on the team to conduct it. It's not like Harris and Jack are terrible but they're not in the team for their kicking, and they're the two most consistently behind the ball. I'd rather us push McKenna or Coleman back to act as a link in the centre if we're going into chip and keep away mode - I know Rich does it more often when he's in the team.

Yes this does seem to happen a bit.

Agree with others that we seem to literally slow down to go slow. Instead we need everyone sprinting around so we can actually get some free options for short safe kicks that are not 20m backwards. I would like our tactic to change a bit. Sure chip a pass to someone free if they are forwards / sideways, possibly slightly backwards. But let's not give 40m of territory up and then just kick the ball long. I'd rather a sideways kick or two then a slow kick down the line. Oscar should have time to get back and at least get the ball out at worst. And we are the best clearance side in the comp so we should be confident we are a decent chance to win it back

The 2 glaring ones the last 2 weeks were kicks 20m back to Harris by himself. You miss that kick slightly and big chance of a goal.

Agree.

I also think that sometimes we are setup for a down the like ball. No one is set up for a switch. There are no options in the corridor. And we got one or two kicks too many and all that it achieves is the oppo squeeze up on us and we lose territory for the eventual kick down the line.

I noticed that too Scoman u are spot on. I thought Sharp was ignored at times which would be not great for his confidence. His field kicking is something he needs to work on and I hope with time it will improve to AFL level. I also agree with Your observation with Motty I thought he played a wonderful game. His field kicking has improved and I reckon that is as a result of getting game time. You become more confident when you know the coach has your full support.

Thinking about this some more, maybe we are trying to lull the opposition into a coma at the same time, and us sprinting around would disrupt that a bit.

I guess we're trying to get the other team to match our "emotional state" and let us play our keepings off for a few minutes.

You see this sometimes when a team is playing so badly that the other team starts playing equally badly, even tho they're much better. This happened a bit in the 2nd quarter of the Hawthorn v Melbourne game on Saturday.

I am in disagreement with some posters on the slowing down of play.
The Lions have been doing this since the early days of Fagan, so it won't be going away.
It is a necessary part of owning the football for short periods of time.

Sure, things can go wrong like any other kick or handball.
This tactic is especially important in the last few minutes of the game. Also needed at other times during the game.
We are not the only club that does this.
Teams towards the top of the ladder are more likely to get it right more times than wrong.
As they say practice makes perfect.

But fatigue and the actual occasion (say close game/final) can cause issues so the more experienced the player the better.
And of course, we only talk about the fumbles part not when we actually score from the tactic like Rayner's last goal v Bombers.
I am sure there are a lot of other occasions where we either score a goal, point or create a forward stoppage with this type of play.

The main aim is to stop a turnover and if it does happen in is preferable to be in our forward 50 with 0-30 seconds left.
We have been doing this irrespective of being 40 points up or 5 points up.
Barring the last quarter, we still do it even if we are 1-2 goals down. Better to reset after the break than be 2-3 goals down.
