Sydney: The Swans suffered a shock loss to Gold Coast, only managing 2 behinds in the last quarter after scores were level at 3QT to lose by 14 points to send them to 5-3. Unfortunately for the Swans, no player really had much impact forward of centre with no multiple goal scorers whilst the only midfielder to get 20 touches was co-captain Callum Mills, attempting a shut down job on Touk Miller.

Essendon: The Bombers had a come-from-behind win to beat arch rivals Hawthorne, trailing by as much as 25, but rounded out as 27 point winners with 8 goals to 1 in the last quarter. Peter Wright was the main man inside 50 for the Dons as he has been all year, kicking 6 goals against Sam Frost, whilst in the middle Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett dominated on the inside with 60 disposals between them.

Sydney defence vs Essendon forward line

So far Essendon have kicked a goal 23.17% of the time it enters their forward 50, 9th in the AFL. Sydney's defence has conceded a goal 21.84% of the time, which is currently 6th in the AFL so far. All eyes will be on Peter Wright against Tom McCartin inside Essendon's forward 50, the ruckman having kicked 23 goals so far this year from his 8 games, whilst McCartin has been very solid, nobody really getting ahold of him so far this season. Aaron Francis had a strong showing last game, limiting the influence of James Sicily for the Hawks and will be hoping to do something similar to Dane Rampe, whilst Patrick McCartin will be hoping to quell the influence of young key forward Kaine Baldwin as well.

Midfield/rucks battle

This is where the difference between the two teams will probably be realised, with Sydney being 6th and 7th for clearance and contested possession difference respectively, whilst Essendon are 15th and 17th for those areas respectively. Sydney's on ball brigade of Luke Parker, Callum Mills, Chad Warner and James Rowbottom have been a feature of the Swans, whilst Essendon's core of Darcy Parish, Dylan Shiel, Jye Caldwell and Zach Merrett has had an up and down season, struggling to make an impact at times on the inside, which reflects on both ladder positions and their rankings in those particular stats. On the outside, Nic Martin has been very impressive on a wing and his ability to influence the play offensively for Essendon, with his match up of Justin McInerney one of the more exciting match ups for the game.

Sydney forward line vs Essendon defence

Sydney are kicking a goal 25.81% of the time it enters their forward 50, 4th in the AFL currently. Essendon's defence has been very leaky, conceding a goal 27.26% of the time it enters defensive 50, which is dead last in the AFL currently. Most eyes will be seeing how Essendon try to tame the influence of Lance Franklin, something that they've always struggled with, and the task is most likely to go to Jayden Laverde, who has struggled at times this year after a strong 2021. The other main match up is probably between young tall prospects Zach Reid and Logan McDonald, the pairing thought of as the best key defender and forward of their draft class respectively, and could be a salivating match up for a decade.

X-Factor Player

Errol Gulden is one of the best kicks in the AFL already, his ability to find a target inside 50 in strong positions has been part of the secret behind the Swans rise the last couple of years.

Key stat

Sydney: Clearances. All three losses have coincided with losing the clearances, so a vital area of the game for the Swans.

Essendon: Goals/inside 50 conceded. This has been a huge issue for the dons, their defence is leaky and the Sydney look strong inside 50.

Tip

I don't think we win this, Swans by 22
