Autopsy Round 9 vs Essendon plus changes

Not really a surprising outcome. The loss of Ellis, Conca, and Knights (probably our three best link players), compounded by the Deledio injury means that we couldn't move the ball at all. Combine that with a terrible showing in the clinches and we just didn't look up to it. We were kept in it by some pretty heroic performances in defence.

As a side note, was Vickery injured? He definitely shouldn't have been subbed, especially not in front of Nahas.

Why is it that we always burn guys on the lead when going i50 and ALWAYS end up bombing it long to massive contests? Doesn't take long for anyone to work out what we are going to do. So they put a spare man back there and we don't ever bother manning up on them

grigg seems to REFUSE to lower his eyes to hit a target. Then again its not like he could hit em up.

thanks, I take great pleasure since blokes on this thread laughed when i said Essendons midfield was far more superior to Richmonds. Bunch of downhill skiers your mob
If we did this on another board we would be carded!

-Our posters on this board. "I've never been more ashamed to be a Richmond supporter". GAGF:thumbsdown:

What's ugly about it?

We just played the worst brand of football I have seen in my lifetime. I can handle losing been used to it all my life as a Richmond supported but I can't handle idiots choosing to play a game plan that is purely to counteract our opposition instead of win us a game. The coaching was so poor, we didn't man up, we didn't tag their star player, we didn't try to win and our players didn't show the effort I expect the thousands they are getting paid to. As a passionate support I know how hard I would try in their position which is why I am ashamed because no one tried anything.

The coach, the players all let the game go past them like they were happy to be spectators. When your losing a big game you make a stand even if it is just risk taking or physical. We have been let down big time!

It was great to Rancey get back to form – maybe the court case had an effect on him in previous weeks. Held the back half together with Newman.

Vlastuin continues to impress as to does Edwards

“The Spud Sack”

Nahas – selfish, undisciplined, weak, insipid
Jackson – I have seen some poorly skilled players at Richmond in my time but this fellow takes the cake. I think teams now let him get the footy
McGuane – has a go but I think we can now safely say the experiment has run its race
King – No more, just no more of this rubbish
Lonergan – poor
Maric – One good season does not a career maketh
Deledio – any chance of this guy playing well against a good team? Ever? The midfield experiment can come to an end – send him back to half-back

Now to Dimma and our recruiting. Dimma cannot continue to play Jackson, Nahas, McGuane and King and think we will make the top 8. When Dimma entered the fray 3 years ago he talked about foot skills being a cornerstone of our recruiting policy and game plan.

We have then recruited the following players:
Grigg – poor foot skills
Petterd – poor foot skills
Lonergan – Poor foot skills
Chaplin – Poor foot skills

And then we play the following players who were already at the club with poor foot skills:
Jackson
Nahas
McGuane

It feels like we are going backwards. We don’t play on because there are too many players we cant trust by foot.

We need a CHF which presents as a leading option.

Without Tuck out midfield is physically weak – almost feeble.

That is all!

Changes for next week:

OUT: Nahas, Lonergan, Jackson, McGuane, Vickery

IN: Ellis, Arnot, A.Edwards, Conca (Hopefully), Stephensen

Completely agree. We played shithouse, i hope we can redeem ourselves next week at subi.

Surely McBean is ready for a call up, players like Nahas and Lonergan need to go so McBean can get a shot at AFL, He is a very exciting young player who just has so much X Factor about him. you guys will be better off for it as well.

A few years back Hardwick made a decision to play kids and get rid of the list cloggers, it has really worked well for you guys , but in 2013 he is starting to regain more list cloggers and not play the kids which is not really working at the moment.

just my view from afar.

This is the exact shit I'm talking about. Stop being a drama queen and calm down.

Agree with all that apart from the chaplin poor skill. Turned over 1 kick tonight at the end but thought he was very good as a tall defender tonight.

It's the easiest thing to do in the world but coaches continually fail to do it and wonder why their careers run short. The Geelong coach is doing an amazing job of it which is why he'll probably be coach for the next 10-20 years.

It it what I call the coming in from under instead of over the top theory.

It is quite simple instead of expecting to pick up guns from other teams you get all your players by playing young players and developing them. Instead of bringing players older than your core in (over the top) you bring in players younger (under) and develop them. That way your list stays strong forever and you only miss finals every now and again. It's so ****ing easy!

This is the exact shit I'm talking about. Stop being a drama queen and calm down.

The difference is we were actually shit in those videos. I'm not being a drama queen, we are capable of beating most teams in the competition yet the way we played tonight was horrible. We played a brand that didn't match our ability and it was the coaches fault first then the players with pea hearts.

I'd rather get smashed by a much better team than watch a team who is no better beat us because we play a shit brand.

Pretty much sum up my thoughts. Lack class and skill on the outside. When Grigg and Jackson are getting most of those possessions you're in trouble and not going to hurt the opposition. Bombers tore us to shreds on the outside. Backline (Rance, Chaplin, Newman) saved us from a 10 goal loss.

In a bit of trouble now. We look ordinary with a few injuries and Conca/Ellis won't be back until After the bye. Could be 10th after tomorrow and we won't beat WC in Perth so likely to slide even further.

Ps Lonergan was awful pickup. Slow, sloppy skills. Offers very little.

I agree, just ask Dean Bailey.

I do agree with what you're saying though.

I'll say it once more only. Vickery is no good.
I'm sorry, people on this board may hate me but sport is a game of opinions and that is mine.
Yes, I know he had one good year, in 2011.
You know who else had a good year once upon a time? Shane Woewodin.
I think we should chase Gumbleton in the off-season, he is much MUCH better than Vickery if he can stay on the park.

The coaching staff should be ashamed of themselves putting Nahas in the side against a big, strong bodied team like the bombers. What a disgrace. The bloke couldn't stick a tackle to save himself and looks completely out of his depth. Dud. Delist.

Deledio, I love you but my god you need to play good against a decent side.
The only tag he has shaken this season is an 'over-the-hill' Kane Cornes.

Our ill-discipline continues to be a feature of our game. Very, very poor. Bad coaching in this area.
Jake King, when you give away a free kick, shut the eff up. You look like a fool.

Our lack of run is pathetic. We looked slow and unfit against a very professional bombers side.

You know you're in trouble when Grigg and Jackson are your highest possession getters. Would love to know how many times they turned the ball over or hand balled to someone under pressure tonight but don't want to waste another 2 hours of my life watching the replay.

Oh and on a final note, is there any, ANY chance that Alex Rance will be able to keep his feet one of these days? Big biceps, big chest but absolutely no core strength.
What a joke

Goodnight.

The atmosphere before the game was amazing and the contest for the first quarter was even. The stage was set for a good night of football. Then the second quarter turned into a possession game of switching from one side of the ground to the other - very slowly - which allowed Essendon to man up. So we switch it again and in the meantime chip backwards with nothing kicks that were rarely more than the required distance. The promise shown in the first quarter was erased with a gameplan that was really poor to watch, and because we have a number of players that like to turn the ball over, Essendon knew it was just "a matter of time" before we coughed up the ball and the overlap and spread killed us. The gameplan was a disgrace. The corridor was non existent. Essendon simply allowed the ball to be passed in our back 50, because it would result in another scoring opportunity.

The forward line was static and did not present. By the time the backline had 75 X 15 meter kicks sideways, the Essendon backs had the forwards covered. So I don't blame the starved forwards. Just a dumb gameplan.

Midfield is second string at the moment. Watson did as he pleased all night, our pressure and tackling were second rate. Really missing Tuck and Conca. Morris and King spent time in the rotations - both were in the centre square for 2 centre bounces. That's simply stupid coaching.

One think that I don't like - When the pressure is applied, it creates turnovers and errors. The longer the pressure, the more likely the players become selfish and play for themselves rather than the team. We then play a "low risk" brand of football - happy to chip it around and deny the opposition. The opposition get "hungrier" for the contest, and create the turnovers. Some players look "too scared" to run and carry and take risks. Zero attack on the corridor and no leading forwards out of the square. We are fast becoming a predictable side.

Negatives

- Gameplan. Easily the worst game we have played for 2-3 years. Chipping sideways and backwards. Even the members "booed" this abomination.
- Coaching - Dimma has no "plan B". Swing Lids FORWARD to break a tag. 5 goals down with a momentum swing - use the corridor ! This boundary line footy is CRAP !
- Nahas was just terrible. Slips over at a crucial moment, gets up and checks his boots ! Not AFL standard.
- Grigg - Another 500 possession game, with zero impact. Kicks sideways, then backwards, then sideways, then handballs to a player under pressure. Yes - that's 100% efficiency, no impact and a resultant turnover.
- Inaccuracy in front of goal - Cotchin, Martin (twice), Maric.. Jack - stop leading into the pockets !
- Discipline - King 50M, Jack jumping into packs when there is no way he was even in the contest. Stop it. You look stupid !

Positives

- That is our worst game for the year behind us
- Chaplin is a very good pickup for us.
- Vlas is a seriously good player. Attacking and composed. Very skilful and backs himself.
- Coaching panel won't be stupid enough to engineer such a failure of a gameplan again. That was horrible to watch. If I want to see rubbish like that, I'd follow Ross Lyon's team..
- One less week we have to wait for Conca, Ellis, Tuck and Grimes.
- Another game under Foley's belt. Only White broke the lines tonight, and we need Foley to break open games like he did 2 years ago.
- We play good footy at Subi..

Out - Nahas, Grigg

In - Ellis, A. Edwards

I would love to sit in on the coaches box and find out what actually happens with some things. There has got to be a reason we play a certain game plan or choose to have players in different positions.
It's not just Dimma. There's what 5 other specialist coaches in the box, plus Chocco on the boundary?
Everyone in the crowd could see nahas is not built for the midfield. If he must play, put him in the bloody forward line!

He must never play.
Ever.
Again.

Ever.
