Next world cup will be 48 teams. Im guessing they wont have inter confederation play off games like Oz beat Peru and Costa Rica beat NZ for the last 2 places.

My best guess for teams per Confederation;

CONCACAF 3 hosts Canada, USA and Mexico + 4 others =7 here 4
Oceania 1 so NZ assured a WC place here 0
South America 6 - of the 10 nations here 4
Africa 7 here 5
Asia 7 here 6 inc host
Europe 20 here 13.

Looks like there will still be some form of playoffs

Cheers. I should have looked it up on the 2026 WC wiki page.

I read somewhere at the start of this year, before the above was locked in at a FIFA Congress meeting mid year, that they were looking at 18 to 20 teams from UEFA and no inter-continental play offs.

Its why I thought 7 from CONCACAF this time because of 3 hosts, and 6 for the future, given they have 35 members.

I knew Africa would have at least as many places as Asia because they have more members than Asia, I thought it was 10 but looks like 8, so their voting power at the Congress had to be taken account of, their teams are ranked higher than Asian teams, and that Africa supplies a lot more footballers to UEFA's big 5 leagues as well as the other ones, than Asia does, so Africa had to have at least as many representatives as Asia.

TeeKray is right that FIFA want China in, but they could not give more places to Asia over Africa.

Its probably why they retained the inter-continental playoffs. I guess UEFA got out voted at Congress, or would have, if FIFA proposed 20 places for them. You can't ignore the confederations politics in FIFA. FIFA is structured around the continental confederations.

I guess this way Oceania nations have an incentive for more than just NZ to make it to the WC, South America has an opportunity to have 7 teams as does CONCACAF, and Asia has the chance to match Africa and Africa has the chance to have 2 more teams than Asia.

The November FIFA world rankings for teams in the various Confederations are as follows, bolded teams are at the world cup;

AFC......... 7th ranked Iraq 68, 8th UAE 70, 9th Oman 75, (China 11th 79) (4 nations + Oz inter-continental play off win + host Qatar = 6)
CAF.......... 7th ranked Cameroon 43, 8th Mali 46, 9th Ivory Coast 48 10th Bukina Faso 54 11th Ghana 61 (Nigeria 32 and Algeria 37 didn't qualify for WC) 5 nations at WC

CONCACAF 6th ranked Jamaica 64, 7th El Salvador 74, 8th Honduras 80. (3 nations + Costa Rica inter-continental play off win = 4 nations)
CONMEBOL 6th ranked Chile 29, 7th Ecuador 44 (Colombia 17, Peru 23 lost to Oz in June, so didn't qualify) 4 nations at WC

OCF.......... 1st ranked NZ 105, 2nd Solomon Islands 136 None at WC (NZ lost inter-continental play off to Costa Rica)
UEFA........ 14th ranked Sweden 25, 15th Poland 26 16th Ukraine 27, 17 Russia 33 ( Italy 6 didn't qualify for WC ) 13 nations at WC

Not a problem REH.

I had been reading about the increase in numbers, for 2026, a couple of days ago. When I did a search looking for the article Wiki was at the top of the list.

Missed the Serbia v Cameroon game but saw the post game analysis. Serbia 3-1 up, 62 minute mark, and decide to press really high and Cameroon get one on ones first mid field and sprint deep and free, just avoiding offside and bang 2 goals in 2 minutes and its 3-3 for the next 30 minutes to draw the game. Some poor game tactics by Serbia.

Cameroon 1-0 up.

Serbia bang on 2 in extra time in 1st half.

Serbia 3-1 up

Then Cameroon goes bang, bang.

First goal looks offside and linesman called it but other angle VAR said all OK. Serbia just didn't have to press so far forward. Look at the line of darker and lighter green shading of grass and Camerron guy is just on side.

Player on the far side for Serbia, just cruising causes this one to be on side as well for Cameroon.

And this was all within a couple of minutes. Coach Snoop Dogg was happy.

The second Cameroon goal still looks offside to me. The ball tech they have must really nail down the moment the ball is hit.
Great come back. Shame no winner.

Great cross for that second Ghana goal. Korea get one back just as I was about to say Ghana doing it easy. Might be a night of come backs.

Korea have banged on 2 header goals in 3 minutes.

2nd one was like he was going for a footy speckie but no hands.

This World Cup is wired and fueled by AI

At the 2022 World Cup, everything from stadium temperatures to the soccer balls are run on sensors and algorithms.

........
Technology can’t solve it all, but will be part of the answer. Officials are relying on sophisticated tools to control almost every aspect of the games: from the soccer balls being kicked around to the thousands of cameras tracking fans’ and players’ nearly every move, bringing intrigue and concern.

Here’s a look at the innovations being used.

Sensor soccer ball

The official match ball, made by Adidas, will have motion sensors inside. The sensor will report precise location data on the ball 500 times per second, according to the company, helping referees make more precise calls.

The sensor-filled ball was road-tested at several soccer tournaments leading up to the main event, including the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup, and did not affect player performance, Adidas said.
The ball will be used in all of the tournament’s 64 matches, and will feed information back to a data nerve center, which officials can use to track statistics and monitor game play.

Now Ghana get a 3rd. Lucky miss kick right in front of goal let ball thru to a teammate. This is great viewing.

I still think 64 teams make more sense than 48.

I have actually written the tournament down. But I can’t put it here now. Later, I’ll post it.

8 groups of 4 teams means 6 games per group = 48 games in group stage

12 groups of 4 teams means 6 games per group = 72 games in group stage or
8 groups of 6 teams means 15 games per group = 105 games in group stage

16 groups of 4 teams means 6 games per group = 96 games in group stage

How long do you want the tournament to go for?

Ok. I got a free time. 🙂

I would do it in two stages.

The first one (group stage, plus playoff) would be in the year prior (2029, 2033, 2037, etc.).

The second one (group stage, plus knockouts) would be in the year proper (2030, 2034, 2038, etc.).

Stage 2 would have 16 teams.

Stage 1 would have 4 different hosts: West (Americas), South (CAF), North (UEFA), and East (AFC/OFC). Each with 16 teams.

I don’t remember the spots distribution. But there would be 6 for an international playoffs — all UEFA v. World.

Gue-Sung Cho 2nd header goal shows he'd have no worries getting up high to take a speckie if he played footy

The third round is promising, isn’t it? Teams today were playing their lives already…
Annoyingly the games are on at 1:30 and 5:30am.
Will be watching the replays trying to avoid spoilers.

I have calculated the number of days if it to be done in the same year.

But I would need to check it. I don’t have it with me.

With 48 teams, FIFA is thinking in 16 groups of 3: 48 games in the group stage.

Wow. Ghana hold on. Would have thought another goal was coming.
FT whistle blown with Korea due a corner. Not a common occurrence to blow it there.
