Round ball code talk

I have calculated the number of days if it to be done in the same year.

But I would need to check it. I don’t have it with me.

With 48 teams, FIFA is thinking in 16 groups of 3: 48 games in the group stage.
The greatness of the WC is that its a month of concentrated greatness and the whole world is watching. Spreading it over years or over the year rather than 4 to 6 weeks means you loose that intensity.

I think you are right that FIFA would go for 16 group winners rather than go with 12 group winners and the 4 best 2nd placed teams for the round of 16 knockout games.

You would still have that. Stage 1 would be felt more like the last stage of the Qualifiers.

But it would be the World Cup and, wide spread, it would be closer to the people. It would also be cheaper to host it.

Stage 2 would be felt like the World Cup proper, with 16 teams.

The penalty against Uruguay that made it 2-0 to Portugal seemed harsh. Not sure what that player was meant to do. Put his hand down to brace himself as he was falling and the ball hit his hand as it was just about to land. What’s the ruling these days on handball? Seems like they pay it in any circumstance if the ball hits the hand.

I think that stage 1 will be good enough. I can prove it. I have made simulations.

But stage 2 would be bonkers!

Was talking with a mate about the increase to 48.

I genuinely think it's pushing it too far and thinning out the quality.

I guess maybe 2 more in South America, 3-4 in Europe, 1 in Oceania if that's still a thing?, another Asian, Another African.

That's about half of the increase.... How do you get much more?

If you think of who's missing, some obvious ones this year include China, Italy, Russia. You could add sides like Greece, Ireland...

But it's start getting too think imo.

Im watching the 2nd half replay of Brazil v Swiz game. Vinny Jnr was robbed of a goal by VAR. They still havent shown a good shot of why it was ruled off side.

Now a foul on Vinny Jr just outside the penalty box as he made a surging run down the left wing. Swiz player was lucky to catch him.

As I wrote in post 2554, and the 48 nations allocation by confederation was posted a couple of posts before that, this is FIFA, so the confederations voting dominates and UEFA only get 16 teams and Africa get 9 teams as both have 54 voting members. Asia is where the TV and player growth is so they arent left behind with their 46 votes and get 8 teams.

Casemiro goal was all great touch and skill.

Ronaldo up in the stands has faded away into a warehouse.

GremioPower the pommie commenator on the FIFA world feed, at the end of game said the goalie Alisson has not had to save one shot on goal so far.

Are you happy with the way the defence has been playing? Championship quality?

Also he said Brazil have gone 17 group stage games undefeated, for 14 wins and last loss was Norway in 1998 and that 1966 was last time Brazil didnt advance from the group stage . Can see why you say WC for Brazil really starts at 1/4 final phase.

Am I right in saying that the only Rd 16 knockout game since they started in 1986, Brazil has lost, was to the Argies in 1990?

Thanks, hadn't looked at the actual breakdown. Was more just a thought of how it'd look if you did add a given number. Still I think it's bordering participation trophy at this rate....

Looking at where AFC, CAF and CONCACAF after 2 games and before final games start

Group A - Qatar (0pts) out, Senegal (3pts 4th) beat Ecuador (4pts 2nd) they are thru. Netherlands (4pts 1st) only need a draw v Qatar.
Group B - winner of Iran (3pts 2nd) v USA (2pts 2nd) gets thru to knockout. Draw and Iran is thru unless Wales (1pt 4th) beat England (4pts 1st).

Group C - Saudis 3rd beat Mexico they are thru. Mexico have to beat Saudis by 4 goals and Poland and Argies have to draw for Mexico to get thru.
Group D - Australia 2nd has to beat Denmark and they are thru. Tunsia has to beat France and Oz and Denmark draw and they are thru.

Group E - Japan 2nd beat or draw with Spain and they are thru. Costa Rica beat Germany and other game is a draw they are thru.
Group F - Morocco 2nd beat or draw with Canada they are thru. Canada out.

Group G - Cameroon 3rd have to beat Brazil to get thru and other results the right way
Group H - South Korea 3rd have to beat Portugal and Uruguay have to beat Ghana by only 1 less goal than South Korea win for them to get thru. Ghana just need a draw v Uruguay

So at this stage its not unreasonable for 3 of the 5 African sides to make it thru - Senegal, Morocco and Ghana and 3 of the 6 Asian sides - Iran, Australia and Japan.

If USA beat Iran it will be 3 + 2 + 1 (of 4) CONCACAF sides to get thru to rd of 16.

Both scenarios above would be a massive improvement on prior WC's

Last 5 World Cups going back to Japan/Korea Round of 16. Order is CONCACAF + Asia + Africa + Sth America + Europe

2018 1 (Mexico) + 1 (Japan) + 0 +.................................. 4 + 10

2014 3 (Mexico, USA, Costa Rica) + 0 + 2 ( Algeria, Nigeria) + 5 + 6

2010 2 (Mexico, USA) + 2 (Japan, S Korea) + 1 (Ghana) + 5 + 6

2006 1 (Mexico) + 1 (Oz technically OFC) + 1 (Ghana) + 3 + 10

2002 2 (Mexico, USA) + 2 (Japan, S Korea) + 1 (Senegal) + 2 + 9

So it will be a big deal if its 0+3+3+2+8.

Our defense hasn’t been tested, to be fair. We still need to see how Brazil responds when teams actually manage to attack us.

We have taken full advantage of our opponents being too deep in defense. Our midfield has been dominant. The opposition has had trouble keeping the ball and, even, counterattacking.

Yet, there has been signs of weaknesses. It’s hard to keep focus for 90 minutes. Mistakes happen.

Yesterday, for instance, there was one time when SUI missed an open man inside our box. The match was still 0-0.

It was scary! Better teams wouldn’t miss it. And that can be the difference in the Finals.

You are correct.

Since 1986, Brazil has gone: quarters, R16, champion, final, champion, quarters, quarters, semis, quarters.

It is a loophole on the rule. Richarlison was offside.

However, he had actually a DISADVANTAGE for being offside. Yet, by the letter of the law, he couldn’t play.

He played. Thus, the goal was disallowed.

It’s stupid, but it is the law.

I realise they have to play this round's matches at the same time for each group, but it's a bummer that they're in the later time slots. Even in WA the first games don't start until 11.00pm.

I was enjoying the morning games. It feels something is missing now. 😅

Until now I had been getting games starting at 6.00pm and 9.00pm which was perfect, but I'm not that big a fan of the round ball code to stay up all night ;)

It was 7am, 10am, 1pm, and 4pm.

Now, it will be noon and 4pm.

P.S.: Soccer is great! 🙂
