There were times when it was a coin-toss, can you believe it?!

If the card/fair play situation had been the same then it would’ve gone to a drawing of lots by the organising committee.

In other words, who could come up with the biggest bribe 😎

I would have added FK against, corners for, FIFA rankings, all before thinking maybe putting “coin toss” as a last-resort tie-breaker.

I'm a sucker for these types of montagues from World Cups - all types of sports, Olympics and other big sporting events.

Leckie's goal run with GPS data. Started 87.3m from goal, hit max speed of 33.7 kkm/hr and took the shot from 15.3m from goal.

Since 2014 WC I have said he is like Mark Viduka was for the Socceroos, a key player, is important to the structure of the team, gets the ball often near goals, but doesn't get reward for effort as just misses goals either wide or hits the post, a great save by the keeper, stretches and just misses get a foot to a pass in a great position etc and the ball just wont seem to go in. A great time to get his first WC goal.

That Leckie goal reminded me of the first goal I ever saw him score for Adelaide United vs Pohang Steelers in 2010 - pure pace and great touch, except he was running closer to the left wing at the start and then cut back inside. Can't find vision of it but he skinned defenders on the counter for that goal too. Anyone saying that there was an element of luck involved in the ball going through the legs of the Danish defender is trying to diminish his level of skill.

Damn it- confusing my Portuguese with my Mexican. Forgive me.

Don’t worry. My Spanish is good enough to pick up some accents.

It's interesting that for all the delirium surrounding Saudi Arabia beating Argentina and Japan beating Germany that both teams could find themselves not exiting their groups while Australia who got flogged by France managed to do so (Spain is on 4 points and hasn't guaranteed qualification yet so they won't be doing anything stupid like France did with Tunisia). Both of those teams remind me of Port in 2015 when we beat Hawthorn twice but lost to bottom four teams in Brisbane and Carlton - yeah, it's all well and good when you beat the best teams, but if you can't take care of business against the teams that you should be taking care of, it means jack shit.

Also find it hilarious that Qatar completely bombed out of the World Cup without winning a single point. That's never happened to a host nation in history. Even South Africa who didn't make it out of the group stage in 2010 at least scored 4 points.

You get what you ****ing deserve.

Top 4 teams in groups A to D were all the highest ranked teams - Netherlands 8, England 5, Argentina 3 and France 4.
2nd placed, half were the highest ranked team in the ground........ Senegal 18, USA 16, Poland 26 (Mexico 13), Australia 38 behind Denmark 10 and Tunisia 30

Group B had the lowest total of rankings added up across 8 groups 5+16+19 Wales + 20 Iran = 60
Group D with Oz was 3+10-30+38 = 82.
Group C was pretty close despite Saudis 51, +3+13+26 = 92, with all 4 teams could have topped the group before everyone played last night.
Group A with Qatar 50 and Ecuador 44 and total was 120 but home team was expected to do better. Standard 3,2,1,0 wins top to bottom group.

In other groups at the moment, Group G Brazil 1 has already qualified after 2 games as has Portugal 9 and both would require miracle results not to finish top.

Group E Canada is knocked out and Belgium 2 v Croatia 12 only one will qualify unless Canada flukes a win over Morocco.
Group F everyone is alive from Spain 7 top on 4pts to Germany 11 bottom on 1 pt. Dont think Japan and Costa Rica can beat the big boys tonight.

Thankfully that commentary contains a word that is not only globally understood but also the longest one syllable word that has ever existed in the history of human communication...

Goooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaal!

Draw would have made more sense.

For me it was simple - just have another super over. They take barely any time at all.

Imagine if in tennis rather than end with a 2 game advantage or tiebreak they said ok its whoever hit more forehands.
I know a draw goes against the entire point of a championship game of a tournament, but in extreme situations I think it should be appropriate.

It's not even a draw, really. There's two winners. Everyone wins. A celebration of extraordinary competition.

At some point you have to draw the line - no more extra time or penalty or whatever hoops to jump through. You've both had your chances, time is up, it is what it is.

But the players would want to win, they would rather do whatever it took to defeat the others guys I feel. There would be a hollow feeling about getting a medal for not winning, but surely it's better than losing. There's always next time to win properly.

I have really enjoyed watching Japan attack when they are behind and counter attacking in general.

They have bloody fast forwards and wingers with great ball control.
