And then there were 6

It would create an interesting piece of trivia if Argentina were to win - Australia would have lost all of our round of 16 games to the eventual winner of the tournament (same as Italy in 2006).

2 Penalty shoot outs add to the further drama of this World Cup.

I thought the Argies were going to capitulate in the shoot out like others who have conceeded late goals, have so far.

The Croatian goalie Livakovic saved 11 shots on goal then 2 penalty shots. Croatia had 1 shot on goal that took a deflection

Its a cruel game sometimes.

Croatia reminds me of Germany 2002, not the greatest of teams but a great goal keeper Oliver Khan got them to the Final. Eventually the goal scoring power of Brazil was even too much for him.

Reckon Croatia will make the final again and it will take Mbappe and his mates to finally get past Livakovic often enough.

Thought the handball early in the second half should have earned a penalty for Brazil.

SBS showed the 1990 match between West Germany and Netherlands last night. That was a cracking match. Klinsmann, Matthaeus, Brehme, Gullitt, Koeman, van Basten. Great names.

Two great games for different reasons.
The worst possible outcomes.

I love soccer, but I hate it so much sometimes…

I feel for you Gremio, Brazil were my tip to win the Cup but it was not to be. I hate the penalty shoot out option as it often comes down to who has the best goalie. There are not many other options, although in hockey they tried a player reduction method. Under that method teams play on minus a player each for a set time. If scores are still level another player comes off and so on until there is a score. Not sure if they still do it but it seemed to work and took a lot of the onus off the goalie.

With Brazil out I will go to my roots and hope the Poms can get over France.

The goal by Neymar was brilliant. It needed to be to get one past the Croatian gk. He was brilliant.
Neymar’s goal had two smart things to it. He needed to actually round the goalie to score as Livakovic was stopping everything shot in front of him and then as one commentator mentioned he hit it into the roof of the net and fast to get it over the outstretched last defender’s leg.
Similarly Kuol, in our game vs Arg did mostly everything right in that last final shot attempt at scoring but needed to hit it just 10cm higher to avoid the outstretched arm of the Argie’s gk.

By fair means or foul (depending on which side you're on) a sneaky Croatian player needs to sink Argentina's flagship before he can score a goal.

Yeah I watched all of it - probably compressed to 43 to 45 minutes of actual play - and thought how good are these two sides. Looked it up and it was a Rd of 16 game not 1/4 final.

You may be right on that...

88th minute Argie crudely fouls a Dutchie near the side line in Dutch half and are attacking and Dutch bench is on that half. Dutch team mate Van Dyke #4 goes up to Argie and shirt fronts him Tony Abbott style, ie chest bumps the Argie and the Dutch bench clears onto the field as Argies rush in to help out their teammate.

Edit here is the vision

It was a noticeably rougher game than it is today. That generation, from their parents still had WW2 firmly etched in their psyche.

A Croatian win means flares - even indoors. The National 2nd Division is coming, so are the flares.

One of the greatest WC goals and in the final minute of extra time. Deception and smarts at its finest.

Boz might have played for the Socceroos but Croatian heritage is in his heart. He almost cried when they talked about it on the couch in the studio after the game.

The other day before Croatia played Japan he said his old man rang him up (and his siblings) to make sure he was barracking for Croatia against Japan, as he had praised Japan a fair bit in the coverage.

Tell us what you really think Martinez 😳

Imagine an AFL player throwing grenades like this!🤣
