Round ball code talk

Well you guys were not wrong, Honduras found a way to score in the end ;)
That's why I was so pissed off we let that goal thru in the last 30 seconds. We have had stupid lapses of defence since the 3rd game of the 3rd round of Asian qualifiers. This was just another example. Luckily it didn't matter but its annoying. I blame Matt Ryan. He stuffed up - twice in that 1 play.

From that second link

Allocation: All teams will be allocated to pots 1 to 4 based on sporting principles with each pot containing eight teams. This means that the October 2017 edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be used to allocate all qualified teams to the four pots according to their ranking in descending order, with the best seven teams along with hosts Russia in pot 1. The principle of drawing the teams into the groups will remain unchanged. Hence, no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group.

That to me says that nothing has really changed. What might change is that once the teams are allocated to a pot, by confederation, rather than by random draw from that pot, they will be drawn out by ranking.

Or it means that rankings will be used to allocate confederations and their teams so that the pots are equally ranked/weighted after Pot A as that has the top 7 teams and Russia and will rank higher than the other 3 pots.

What does based on sporting principles mean?? To me that means that 2 or more teams from the smaller confederations dont end up in the same group.

FIFA will alocate the pots mostly by ranking, only taking care of avoiding 3 UEFA (or 2 from elsewhere) teams in the same group. It doesn't change much, indeed.

Final qualifying game Peru v NZ starts in an hour The game is scheduled to begin at 1.15pm AEDT.

But the Kiwis are hit by dirty tricks

Three military jets have conducted a spectacular low flying swoop over the New Zealand team hotel in Lima this morning. This is a seeming continuation of the intimidation — an ear-splitting fireworks display took place outside the hotel at 3am local time this morning. The New Zealand team are based in the JW Marriott hotel, in one of the most upper class areas of the capital on the coast. They will be relaxing and preparing for the match, and would surely have heard the thunderous, shrill sounds as the jets flew by, as the noise was ear piercing.

The noise was audible across many blocks all down the main street of Avenida Larco, and as the jets passed by there was loud cheers and applause from all the assembled Peruvian fans out on the streets. The underside of the jets were emblazoned with Vamos Peru (Come on Peru) in huge red letters. It feels like the intimidation level has gone up another level, with constant reminders that the All Whites stand in the way of a nation’s football dreams.
.........
Precautions have been taken. The small group of New Zealand fans will be surrounded by police at the stadium tonight, just to ensure there are no clashes if things turn sour. There has been extra security added to the All Whites motorcade on the way to the game, and New Zealand Football have put together an alternative plan in place. Should the team achieve an against the odds victory, it is likely the team would be held inside the stadium for a few hours before they try to leave for their hotel in central Lima.

South Americans give zero fcks. Will do whatever it takes to get to the world cup. Love to see the Kiwis win, but unlikely.
Actually, they give too many fcks. They put the whole country behind their national team, often forgoing good manners, fair play and basic decency.

I would love to see NZ win. But as you said, very unlikely. The stadium will be a cauldron and players and/or referees will undoubtedly feel intimidated. But if NZ can keep them scoreless for the first half, the nerves will start to affect Peru. So who knows? Weirder things have happened in football.

1-1 draw at the 70 minute mark will make for fun viewing.

1-0 to Peru. The goal had been coming since kickoff. Durante comes over to help out, gets numegged, no cover provided for his man, Farfan, who scores.

That's useless because it doesn't explain how it meets FIFA's criteria of - no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group

Ange showed a video of when he got the job in October 2013 as a gee up to the players. He talked about planning for the next 5 years back then. I think he is going to the WC as coach.

SOCCEROOS coach Ange Postecoglou had a final trick up his sleeve to ensure his players were feeling one hundred feet tall when they walked out onto ANZ Stadium to face their World Cup qualification destiny against Honduras on Wednesday night. The national team manager revealed after Australia secured qualification for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia with a 3-1 win over Honduras that he showed a video to his squad just hours before kick-off reminding them of the mission they have all been on together since he took over the top job in October, 2013.

“I said it to them before the game, I think it’s important you stand for something,” Postecoglou told Fox Sports. “I showed them the interview I did when I got the job, I said that day we weren’t going to take any backward steps in the next four years and we were going to be bold and ambitious. “That doesn’t come without challenges, obstacles and stumbles but we stick to what we believe in.”

The video involved cut-up clips of Postecoglou answering questions at his first press conference after being unveiled as sacked coach Holger Osieck’s replacement. The 52-year-old spliced together a call to arms which still hits just as hard as the day he was announced as the man that would lead the Socceroos to the 2014 World Cup in Rio. Needing to break his contract with Melbourne Victory to take up the top football office in the country, Postecoglou made his ambitious vision of “restoring pride to the national team” very clear right from his first press conference. That is the message he saved for gameday on Wednesday afternoon when he addressed his players at ANZ Stadium.

It is a video that clearly lit a fire under the Socceroos players before the Honduras challenge. “My hope and my belief is that we can restore pride to our national team and our national team jersey,” Postecoglou said four years ago. “I still think the national team, the Socceroos, are the flag-bearers of our code. “I plan for the next five years, hopefully longer, to put my heart and soul into making our national team represent our code and our country proudly.” His first statement at the press conference outlined his plan to make the Socceroos the pinnacle of Australian sporting admiration. “My hope and my belief is that we can restore pride to our national team and our national team jersey,” he said. “I still think the national team, the Socceroos, are the flag-bearers of our code.....

That's useless because it doesn't explain how it meets FIFA's criteria of - no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group

If a team draws another from the same confederation (or more than one other in the case of UEFA teams) I would assume they put that ball back in the pot and draw out another one until they get one that meets the rules. It doesn't sound like they're going to muck around with which teams go into which pot - that's determined by the FIFA rankings.

If you are going to write a story about how the draw works you should actually explain how it works consistent with all of FIFA's requirements, not give half a story and let people guess how it will work. The BBC have attended enough draws to know they should have given a full explanation.

Have FIFA themselves explained it in any terms better than that BBC article? Certainly not in the link Gremio posted - despite the vague 'sporting principles' wording used, it goes on to specifically state teams 1-7 + Russia will be in pot 1, and all 4 pots filled in descending ranking order.

That's why you don't write an article if you don't know what they have done in the past, you read the full article, and ask follow up questions rather than guess what they will do.

You just want the answer handed to you on a plate. How about you do your own research you grumpy campaigner.

;);)

My mate is married to a Peruvian girl and lives in Sydney. He is also a Sturt supporter. Just got a txt from him and said his oldest son who is almost 7, has now watched live in the flesh Sturt win 2 flags, went to watch the Socceroos qualify last night and watched Peru qualify today for the first time in 36 years, as he didn't go to school today. Sometimes its all about timing.

All the seedings for the December 1 WC draw:

POT 1: Russia (hosts), Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, France

POT 2: Spain, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Croatia, Peru

POT 3: Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Iran

POT 4: Serbia, Nigeria, Japan, Morocco, Panama, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Australia

Potential group of death would include any of Brazil, Germany or Argentina from Group 1 and Spain from Group 2.

Watching New Zealand's qualifiers makes me very thankful that we are out of the Oceania qualifying lottery. Beat up on a bunch of small island nations and then have a two legged tie against a team half way across the world to determine if you get to the World Cup or not. Rinse and repeat every four years.

We ended up in the playoffs but we had ample opportunity to qualify directly (or not even qualify for the playoffs at all if we didn't earn that right by beating semi-decent teams).

It's probably about time the rest of the Oceania teams were absorbed into the AFC pool.

GremioPower you have obviously watched the draw plenty of times before. I have watched it since 1990 when Blatter was secretary general of FIFA and had all the balls in the different pots and then since 2002 other secretary generals have done it and not just for the WC, but also the U/17, U/20's and the Women's versions, etc and also I've atched the confederation draws ie the Asian Cup draws.

So if we still assume they will used balls with a piece of paper with the country names inside the ball, then I think they will need different coloured balls for the teams from the different confederations, rather than having all the same coloured balls and pulling out a ball with a name but the confederations clash and having to put that back in the pot to avoid the clash. The coloured balls seem to be the only way to me to meet their requirements as confirmed today when they released the Pots Final Draw.

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/y=2017/m=11/news=pots-announced-for-final-draw-2920191.html
It is worth remembering that the principle of drawing the teams into the groups will remain unchanged. This means that no teams from the same confederation, with the exception of UEFA, which could have up to two teams in the same group, will be drawn into the same group.

So I have given teams from the different confederations different coloured balls.

upload_2017-11-16_17-41-13.png

Ok so there will be 8 groups A to H and 4 slots per group A1, A2, A3 and A4 etc

So Pot 1 balls could be all the same colour and as FIFA have already put Russia into the A1 slot and their games scheduled at stadiums in Mostcow St Petersberg the 2 biggest ones and the new stadium at Samara, then the other teams get drawn from Pot A and into B1, C1, D1 etc slot.

So from Pot 2 to draw the A2 slot the person will be told they can draw any coloured ball, but when it comes to drawing the other slots it will be a bit more complicated as it depends what team is in that #1 slot. I wouldn't be surprised if they say the B1 and C1 slot has to come from a yellow ball to make the draw easier. It means that the person drawing the B2 and C2 cant draw a yellow ball and then D2 onwards its any ball. but that is just me trying to make the draw simpler.

Pot 3 is a bit more complicated again as they will have to make sure 3 Euro teams don't end up in a group that already has 2 euro teams so the B3 and C3 balls will be instructed to be blue balls if the B1 and C1 slots are indeed given to South American teams. The 3 Euro teams will probably end up in a group that already has 2 Euro teams. At least 1 group will have 3 Euro teams in it.

Pot 4 will be the most complicated in limiting which coloured ball can be drawn at the time for he A4 to H4 slot. Serbia will probably be allocated to one of the 2 teams from South America in the Pot 1 slots or a separate draw to make sure one group doesn't have 4 Euro teams.

Its all doable but its more complicated than the old system and wont be a blind draw like its been before when all the balls are the same colour and the person drawing the ball can probably guess what team is in the ball. Well they will know that Mexico is in the green ball in Pot 2.
