Thanks!

Argentina. It is from Lanús, a small town in the Southern suburbs of Buenos Aires.

P.S.: Not as small as I thought — https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanús
You know the World Game better than me, but from what I have been able to work out, the Argentinian League is the closest to the AFL, ie the top 40 or so leagues around the world, in that half the teams come from one city or the greater metro area with anywhere between 13 to 16 teams of the 30 in the top division coming from Buenos Aires depending on who is relegated and promoted.

You are right. From third divison downwards, the league even splits into Metro and Country zones.

Copa Libertadores Grand Final

1st leg - Grêmio x Lanús, in Porto Alegre

It will start soon!

THE GREATEST SOCCER TOURNAMENT OF THE WORLD ENDS TONIGHT! (aka "tomorrow morning" for you all)

Copa Libertadores Grand Final

2nd leg - Lanús x Grêmio, in Lanús

Kickoff at 10:15am in Adelaide

Grêmio won the first leg, 1-0.

No away goals. If the series ends up tied in points, tiebreaker is goal differential. IF GD is equal, there will be a 30' Extra-Time. If the tie remains, then the champion will be decided through PKs (and Grêmio would be screwed...).

Big day for the FFA today. I think FIFA might step in. The owners of the A League are playing the conflict of interest card for FFA board members ie chairman Stephen Lowy.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-30/a-league-clubs-allege-ffa-conflicts-of-interest/9210960
The A-League clubs have delivered a bombshell on the morning of a crucial meeting that will shape the future of Australian soccer, detailing a list of 13 potential conflicts of interest involving Football Federation Australia (FFA) board members.

The Australian Professional Football Clubs Association (AFPCA), the lobby group formed by the 10 clubs, wrote to FFA chairman Steven Lowy on Thursday morning to outline its concerns about the independence of his board. It comes ahead of FFA's annual general meeting in Sydney this afternoon, when it is expected Lowy's latest proposal for a new FFA Congress structure will be voted down, meaning likely intervention in some form from FIFA. The letter not only raises the temperature ahead of today's meeting, but is an attempt to flag fundamental governance problems are at play to the sport's world governing body. FIFA is believed to have a range of options open to it if the FFA cannot agree on a restructure, one of the most severe being to install a normalisation committee to take over the sport until the governance question is resolved.....

A bit of background

What is the FFA Congress?
The FFA Congress manages how football is run across Australia, electing members of the FFA board and approving changes to its constitution. * State and territory associations, as they have for many years, still wield a lot of power. They have nine (NSW is split into two) of the 10 seats on the current FFA Congress. * All parties agree this overall number needs to expand. In fact, the number of seats of similar bodies overseas run into the hundreds.

FIFA Statutes, Article 17
(Independence of Members and their bodies)
  1. Each Member shall manage its affairs independently and with no influence from third parties.
  2. A Member's bodies shall be either elected or appointed in that Association. A Member's statutes shall provide for a procedure that guarantees the complete independence of the election or appointment.
  3. Any Member's bodies that have not been elected or appointed in compliance with the provisions of par. 2, even on an interim basis, shall not be recognised by FIFA.
  4. Decisions passed by bodies that have not been elected or appointed in compliance with par. 2 shall not be recognised by FIFA.

The crisis engulfing Australian football could see a doomsday scenario of the Socceroos and all Australian national football teams excluded from FIFA-sanctioned tournaments, including the 2018 World Cup. Football Federation Australia's (FFA) extraordinary AGM this evening will see the governing body and member states, A-League club representatives and the players' union attempt to fix the divide between FFA chairman Steven Lowy and those demanding change at boardroom level.

The FFA's proposed expanded congress for Australian football will see all nine state governing bodies represented, with four A-League representatives as well as one vote each for the PFA and women's football, in a 9-4-1-1 model. But a 9-5-1-1 structure — featuring five A-League votes — is reportedly supported by all state bodies except by Football Federation Victoria. That means the required 75 per cent majority (currently nine votes for state federations and one for clubs) for proposed changes to the FFA's constitution would fail to be ratified. That forecast means a potential FIFA takeover of Australian football is quite possibly on the cards, with the world governing body having the power under its FIFA Statutes to scrap the FFA board.

But amid the pressure to reach an agreement on the day of FIFA's deadline to bring Australian football governance in line with international standards, the Socceroos face possible exclusion from next year's World Cup if it is found that the Federal Government interfered with the FFA's autonomy. On top of that, if as expected FIFA sacks the current FFA board and replaces it with an interim normalisation committee, it could then put any bids for the 2023 Women's World Cup into jeopardy.

Has the Federal Government 'meddled' in Australian football?
Federal Sports Minister Greg Hunt allegedly told a Women in Football forum in Melbourne last week that if FIFA took control of Australian football, then the country would not be successful in mounting a bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup. FIFA takes a decidedly dim view on government meddling in the game, with the likes of Pakistan, Mali, Guatemala and Kuwait all banned, suspended or stripped of membership due to various forms of state interference. Even Peru — the final team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup — saw its government make a backflip over legislation that would have seen its Institute of Sport assume control of its national footballing body.

The world governing body's history here puts accusations Mr Hunt has tried to influence the result of FFA Congress negotiations with his words into a chilling context. Greg Griffin, chairman of Adelaide United and spokesman for the A-League clubs in the congress, said the Federal Government owed football fans an explanation over why it would endanger the Socceroos' place in the World Cup. "I am lost for words, if this is correct, that the federal minister would have made comments designed to influence the outcome of the resolutions," Griffin told SBS earlier this week. "It has the potential to cause massive problems for us with FIFA in terms of maintaining the spot which we have in Russia. "Why would he put our spot at risk in such a way? And if he did say this, he owes everybody an explanation over exactly why he said it."

What else could fall by the wayside?
Another avenue for World Cup exclusion could come if the FFA explored the option of contesting a FIFA takeover in the courts, but that process could drag on for years. FIFA could then threaten the FFA with Australia's 2018 World Cup place as part of a feisty negotiation process. The 2023 Women's World Cup bid is also in jeopardy, with the Federal Government having declared it would withhold $4 million in crucial bid funding if a split between the game's administrators was not resolved. In June, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced an initial $1 million in funding to prepare a bid for the 2023 Women's World Cup. An extra $4 million was promised, "if the Government is satisfied that there are reasonable prospects of success and that the process conforms with the highest standards of probity". Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and Thailand have also expressed interest in hosting the 2023 tournament.

FFA's reform model was rejected at the AGM.

FIFA said the FFA needed 75% vote to reform the system, so with 10 members on the congress that meant 8 votes. They got 7. Not sure if that means FIFA will step in immediately or will continue negotiations. watched a bit of the Q&A part of Lowy's presser and looks like they want to continue negotiation with the 3 who voted no and FIFA.

Lowy made a good point at his presser. 5 of the10 A-League clubs are owned by foreigners. They obviously want more money going into the A-League and not participation and other non A-league.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-11-30/ffa-congress-move-rejected/9212074
The FFA's proposed reform of its Congress model has been rejected by member associations in Sydney. The final resolution at today's Annual General Meeting to create a more democratic governance model was voted down, which means FIFA may now be required to take over the running of the game in Australia. The chairman of the Professional Clubs Association, Greg Griffin, says FFA chairman Steven Lowy has lost the support of Australian football federations.

In a statement, the FFA said it would now formerly communicate the outcome to FIFA, which had set today as the deadline on which to agree on expansion of the Congress. "We will now talk to FIFA about what steps can now be taken to resolve this issue so that we have a larger, more representative Congress," the statement read. "In the meantime we remain keen to create a new separate operating model for the [A-League] and [W-League], working closely with the clubs and other relevant stakeholders. "We will also continue the process of identifying the right person to take the Socceroos to Russia in June and prepare the Matildas for the AFC Women's Asian Cup in April."

Today's AGM got off to a rocky start when A-League clubs delivered a bombshell on the morning of the crucial meeting, detailing a list of 13 potential conflicts of interest involving FFA board members. The Australian Professional Football Clubs Association (AFPCA) — the lobby group formed by the A-League's 10 clubs — wrote to Lowy this morning to outline concerns about the independence of his board.....

GremioPower did you watch the draw. I missed it I forgot it was on. First draw I have missed in over 20 years.

What did they do with the balls in pots 2 to 4? Use different colours or did they use the same coloured balls when there was a confederations clash did they just move that team to the next slot where there was no clash.

Peru ranked 12th but were ordinary in the playoffs and struggled against NZ in NZ.

In the first game against France we should play 4-5-1 and go for a draw.

Doesn't what we play against France, they could either wipe the floor with us, or go into full meltdown as they've done in previous World Cup Finals.

The FIFA ranking systems are bullshit. At the end of October Denmark were 19 and were slotted into Pot 3. They had to play 2 games against Republic of Ireland in November who aren't ranked in the top 20, beat them at home drew in Ireland and have jumped to 12th in the rankings. Peru didn't play in November as they automatically qualified and dropped from 10th to 11th.

Draw started at 1:20pm GPT, so it was easy to watch it (we have 2h-lunch breaks here!). Draw was simple. Balls had the same colour, and only few clashes actually happened. Serbia (Pot 4) was the most bizarre episode, moving from B to E due the 'not more than 2 UEFA teams' rule.

Was that because Serbia was the only Euro team in Pot 4 and they did the Pots in order ie 1 then 2 then 3 and finally 4 and group E and H were the only group with 1 Euro team in it at that stage.

I know why they used October it made sense as the rankings are done at the end of the month but for Denmark to jump 7 spots in a month given who they played, suggests the algorithm is flawed.

Pot 4
A was done (S. Arabia)
Serbia was pulled
BCD had 2 UEFA teams
E was the first group available.

Thank God Ange 'we play the same way no matter who we play against' Postecoglou is gone then.

People used to have a go at Pim Verbeek for his boring, lifeless football but at least he knew when to back his team and when to accept his team was vastly inferior and set up accordingly.

Peru did play in November, they had a two legged playoff against New Zealand for the last place at the finals ...

You are right my bad. So they drew and then won a game and still went back a slot. Still doesn't make a lot of sense unless the original 11th team played a strong opponent and won in November.
