Japan and Senegal play out a 2-2 draw. Both teams great value and neither worthy of losing. Senegal took the lead twice and Japan pulled them back both times. Japan's first goal was a pearler and came out of a long pass that was just dragged in. Senegal's first should have been caught by the Japan goalkeeper but he punched it and it rebounded in off a Senegal player. Japan had the better chances and hit the crossbar as well. Not a spiteful match but there were a lot of yellow cards. It seemed a bit over-officiated as with a lot of those yellow cards it just seemed there was an accidental tangle of legs.
Poland and Colombia, also in the same group, play later this morning. If either team loses they are out. If it is a draw all teams still have a chance.

Of the teams that are 1-20 in World FIFA ranking these ones otherwise did not make the cup, are out after the group stage or on a knife's edge.

Argentina(5) - Must beat Nigeria and hope that Iceland draw or lose to Croatia
Poland(8) - Out at group stage
Chile(9) - Didn't make finals
Peru(11) - Out at group stage
Netherlands(17) - Didn't make finals
Wales(18) - Didn't make finals
Italy(19) - Didn't make finals

Brazil are looking really shaky as well as Germany.

This WC really does have the making of an upset winner on the cards.
i just hope it'll be Uruguay or Belguim for my betting account :D

Germany are the Hawthorn of world football. They seem lucky but they win so many close games it has to be more than just blind luck. If there's a game with a late winner chances are they'll be involved and will be the ones who come out on top. I wouldn't put too much store in them looking shaky, in 1954 they lost 3-8 to Hungary, were 2-0 down to them in the final within 20 minutes and won 3-2. And they had the luck in 1970 of coming up against England with an ill Gordon Banks, who would have saved at least 2 of the goals his replacement Peter Bonetti let in.

1-0 Uruguay.

Suarez steps up.
should be a lot of goals in this one, both defence's are leaky.

Uruguay v Russia was a bit easier for Uruguay than might have been expected. The red card came in the 36th minute after Uruguay were 2-0 up and would have impacted on their chances to come back. And the last goal was in the 90th minute so Russia did OK for most of that game.
So two round of 16 matches are sorted, Uruguay v Portugal and Spain v Russia. And groups C and D will play their final matches today, deciding opponents for 2 more round of 16 matches.
Iran and Morocco in group B were unfortunate in that they were selected along with Spain and Portugal.

Russia got very lucky with the original draw - being the host nation they became the top seeded (pot 1) team for their group, despite having the lowest FIFA ranking of all 32 participants, so that automatically took out a genuine top level opponent from their group and then mystically they also drew Saudi and Egypt.

Out. Lost 2-0 but France and Denmark was a draw so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. Bit of the expected bleating from Craig Foster when the lead-up to the first goal may have been offside. The second goal came from some pretty appalling defending. Good ball control by the Peruvian player but falling off the challenge at the top of the penalty box when there are 3 defenders to 1 attacker is not the way to go. He should never have been allowed to get free let alone shoot.
There was a very good chance after about 10 minutes when two Australians were in the box but while one of them played the ball and got it to a goalscoring position the other player did not think fast enough and it ended up a push into the keepers hands.

It was an underwhelming campaign, not unexpectedly so.

As in qualifying, we played neat football, passing the ball around and defending tight with not much creativity and asking very few questions of opposition defences. It's like we're just happy to be there and not getting smashed is all we're trying to achieve.

We'll see what happens over the next 4 year cycle because we made no progress between Brazil and Russia.

Finding someone who can score other than Cahill would be a good start. Cant rely on penalties all the time

Been on the soccer board or just watching the games on SBS and stuffing up my sleeping patterns. But now Aussies are out, most fun will come from Sam, Santo and Ed's Cup Fever. Unfortunately unlike 2010 when they had nightly Sam Santo and Ed's Cup Fever on SBS in 2010 and then Sam Santo and Ed's Total Football on Fox Sports in 2014 its on ABC iview every 4 days or so.

The Podcasts started in May every Tuesday, but since the world cup started they are doing them every 4 days or so and they have done 2 since the world cup started and filmed and put on iview at

https://iview.abc.net.au/show/santo-sam-and-eds-cup-fever

and the older radio podcasts are at

I think there might be one on tonight analyzing last night's game. But here are some of their classic.

The Kiwi Magic one when in 2010 Oz got smacked 0-4 by the Germans, drew with Ghana and then won against Serbia but didn't advance. The Kiwi's went undefeated - drew with Slovakia 1-1, drew with Italy 1-1 and had a 0-0 draw with Paraguay. They didn't advance but finished 3rd and above Italy who drew 2 games and lost to Slovakia.

Then there was Kim Jong-il

But we can always cheer ourselves up with the Glory Days of Oceania

Don't really understand the negativity from Aussie football reporters in this country about the failure of getting through the group stage.

It was always going to be a tough ask to get through in the group we were in.

First time that the Germans have failed to get out of the Group stage at a WC

I thought this was my end of no sleep week. Now that SBS have all the games that means an extra week of no sleep for the round of 16 games, then we have a few days beak to the 4 quarter finals and then a few more to the semis and then final.

I watched about 40% of the first half then all of the second half in the Germany v South Korea game last night/this morning and all of Germany's games against Mexico and Sweden and whilst they were typical German style when they had the ball, they were suspect to fast counter attacking football down the middle. Craig Foster can get a bit dramatic in his analysis but he was right about the Germans were just assuming they could go slow and things would happen but their defending down the middle was very Un German. Sweden shouldn't have let them win the game and given away that free with 1 minute to go. Mexico should have won 3-0 against them.

But you can expect the Germans to implement changes from under 15 upwards at club academies and national teams to make sure they dominate at the 2022 WC.

Riddle me this, caped cretins. In group H both Japan and Senegal have 4 points and 4 goals for, 3 against. Colombia have 3 points and Poland are out of the cup with 0. Should both Poland and Colombia win 1-0 tonight Colombia will have 6 points and both Japan and Senegal will have 4 points and equal goals for and against. Who will gp through as second in the group?
