****ing come on Cymru!!

Yma o Hyd - Still here (despite everyone and everything)…everyone being the English and their collaborators of course 😂😂

Only we would have miners strikes and other civil rights battles for our official song :).

I know you are probably stirring me up, but my memory is that after the 1982 WC when Brazil went in as big favourites and Italy knocked them out in the 2nd group stage, no 1/4 finals as the first time 24 teams in a WC, the 1986 WC in Mexico, Argentina went in as favourites led by Maradona and 1990 in Italy, Germany and Italy went in as equal favourites given a South American team hadn't won in Europe since 1958 and Germany had made the last 2 WC finals, and Italians at home were expected to do very well.

I reckon Brazil has gone in as favourites or equal favourites ever since then. Even in Russia they were expected to bounce back after the SF disaster in 2014.

I really took my time calculating all the WC since 1962.

1990 is, de facto, the first one I’ve followed. (I was 9.) It could be our own bias, but I don’t remember us not being considered favourites.

Of course, there were others in the mix. But counting us out?! That’s new to me…

Brazil’s World Cup starts in quarterfinals.

If we don’t get there, we didn’t qualify. That’s our “par for the course”.

If you are in quarterfinals, you are a candidate for the title. So, Brazil is a perennial favourite.

Since 2006, we have been eliminated in quarterfinals. The only exception is 2014, which we finished 4th after two blowout losses at home.

Our campaigns from 1974 to 1990 were similarly disappointing. But then, as now, we still arrived at the WC as favourites.

In June/July when the WC was supposed to be on, I remember thinking the time difference wont be so brutal as the main Euro timezone WCs, especially games starting 8pm Euro local time which in June is 4am AEST and 3.30 SA time. The 5pm games weren't so bad if you are a night owl as that's a 1am start so don't have to go to bed and wake up.

The games in Qatar will be played at 1pm, 4pm, 6pm, 7pm and 10pm local time. Not sure why 10pm as the weather is supposed to be reasonable at this time of year there. Probably TV related as 10pm local is 8pm in the main Euro time zone.

But I miscalculated as I thought Qatar was a couple of hours closer to Oz time zone.

As Qatar is 8hrs behind AEST those starting times are 9pm, 12midnight, 2am, 3am and 6am

Oz v France 10pm local = 6am EST 5.30am SA Wednesday 23rd
Oz V Tunisia 1pm local = 9pm EST 8.30pm SA Saturday 26th
Oz v Denmark 6pm local = 2am EST 1.30am SA Friday 2nd

There will be plenty of good games in the group stage in a decent time slot in Oz and plenty in a shitty one. But still my sleep patterns will be greatly stuffed up.

Its the 1/4 final stage on ward where most will be played in that 6pm and 7pm timeslot that isn't so great, although a few are slotted in at 10pm local time.

Didn't say you were counted out, just that my memory is that you didn't go in raging favourites like most of the last 8, but were considered a chance to win in 1986-90.

Other thing I remember about WC's in 1980's world game, there was a lot more hacking around than is allowed today, and Brazil were seen as vulnerable to more physical euro big teams and Argentina in those 2 WCs.

Our kickoff times are 7am, 10am, 1pm, and 4pm. Quite good! It would be even better with DST, but we no longer have those.

When did you get rid of daylight savings? Did the whole country used to swap over or only parts?

WA, Qld and NT don't have daylight savings, and for 20 years or so, Tassie used to go an extra month, but about 10 years ago NSW, ACT, Vic and SA aligned with Tassie and now we go off daylight savings first Sunday of April and back on, first Sunday of October.

There is constant talk that south east Qld will go onto daylight savings. SE Qld is 2% of state's area but has 75% of the population and Gold Coast goes to the NSW border and estimates are that 200k-300k cross the border each work day.

A couple of votes over the years in WA has seen a small majority of people in Perth want it but rest of WA are strongly opposed to it. Think both states have done a trial of it and the politicians didn't enforce it.

2019.

I think it was for the states from our Mid-West, Southeast, and South regions.

Northeast and North didn’t have it.

FIFA covering itself in glory yet again. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was supposed to speak for 10 minutes but he finished up talking for an hour and in a bizarre speech he attacked the human rights record of European countries while telling the world he was picked on in as a migrant kid in Switzerland because he had red hair. He also told the world he was gay even though he probably isn't.

The constant criticsm of Qatar as a poor choice for a World Cup has obviously got to Infantino and the last minute decision by the Qataris to ban full strength beer in the stadiums would not have pleased Budweiser the tournament's major sponsor. I imagine that Budweiser let Infantino know that they were not happy.

Belgium is gonna win. Just leaving this here to quote later.
Last team to win with a population of less than 13m - Uruguay 1950.

Edit Argentia had 27m people when it won in 1978 which is the snallest country population wise, to win since 1950.

Everyone should boycott this mess.

Given the Australian taxpayer's money wasted in the farcical bidding process for 2022 I would be boycotting but as Australia are involved I will follow the torney at least until Australia are eliminated, which probably will not take that long.

Looking at the draw, if the top ranked sides finish 1st in their group and win their round of 16 games, then we are going to end up with;

Top half of the draw
1/4 finals Netherlands v Argentina and Spain v Brazil

Bottom half
1/4 finals England v France and Belgium v Portugal

Although you don't count Germany out this early in the tournament. If they finish 2nd to Spain in group E they are in the bottom half of the draw and will play the winner of Group F which is likely to be Belgium in Rd of 16.

If they finish top of group E they are in the top half of the draw and will play the 2nd team of Group F which is likely to be Croatia in Rd of 16 and then likely to play Brazil in the QF.

Will be interesting to see which team surprises. Senegal were primed until Sane got injured.
Uruguay might be next on the list.
Hosts looked terrible last night. Their GK was amateur level. Good win for Ecuador.

Watching the WC preview show before England v Iran starts and SBS show part of their tribute to Les Murray from the end of 2014 WC when he said it was his last WC. I still miss him even though he passed away a year before Russia 2018. I miss his welcome almost every night to the coverage in the language of the host nation.

I got over Johnny Warren passing probably because we saw him getting sick for about 15 months and he passed away before the 2005 qualifying and 2006 in Germany coverage.

Boz might add a different dimension. At least you know there will be plenty of laughter.

What’s the population of the Netherlands and Croatia. Both got close recently.

Monochromatic kits count: 5/6

Only England has escaped this awful trend so far.
