Liverpool have 82 pts after 29 games and 2nd placed Man City have 57pt after 28 games. So given its a 38 game season, they only have to win 2 more games as they go to 88 pts and City can only get to 87 pts if win the last 10 games they play.

If Liverpool win the title after 31 games do they say, stuff trying to get other EPL records, we have won, now we go flat out for the Champions League title, we can't do the treble as we lost the FA Cup 5th round to Chelsea??

Next 2 games are Everton away on 17th and then Crystal Palace on 22nd. According to this page the earliest winners have been mid April with 5 games left Man U in 2000-01 and Man City in 2017-18.

Guess its the best way to beat a 30 year title drought.

But they are 0-1 down after playing Atletico Madrid away in the Round of 16 in the Champions League. Got win by at least 2 goals ( or 1-0 and win a penalty shoot out) on the 11th to progress to quarter finals.

Win a Euro title one year and the domestic league title the next year takes them back to their glory years of late 70's and early 80's.

by the time he retires he is surely going down as the greatest ever
He's in the conversation with these guys. The Ballon D'Or wasn't awarded this year because of Covid so they voted for a side made up of previous winners.

hard to argue with that list

obviously loads of greats that missed out like Cruyff

Where Messi has a gap in his CV is World Cups and performing in these tournaments. Pele and Maradona have him covered there. It's still the biggest stage for a footballer.

Cristiano Ronaldo has done ok at the WC but he did lead Portugal to win Euro 2016. Messi hasn't done much in the Copa America, Argentina have made the finals in 2015 and the 2016 centenary tournament but Messi didn't deliver.

Messi will probably go down as the greatest club / Euro club player, but his international career not meeting the same heights, will leave him behind others who have also been able to dominate on those stages.

When I saw there were some new posts in this thread I thought it may have been about Gerard Houlier who has passed away.

Was a decent manager at a number of clubs, most notably at Liverpool and PSG, and also managed the French National sides at different levels.

He was still involved in the game through his role at Red Bull.

We should’ve got hold of him and that fabled Red Bull sponsorship may have come our way.

RIP Gerard.

Hands up, who knew there was a one-off “friendly” soccer match between a sort of 1960s VFL state team coached by a loudmouthed Jack Dyer and a local Melbourne soccer club?
