Brazil’s World Cup starts in quarterfinals.

If we don’t get there, we didn’t qualify. That’s our “par for the course”.

If you are in quarterfinals, you are a candidate for the title. So, Brazil is a perennial favourite.

Since 2006, we have been eliminated in quarterfinals. The only exception is 2014, which we finished 4th after two blowout losses at home.

Our campaigns from 1974 to 1990 were similarly disappointing. But then, as now, we still arrived at the WC as favourites.

When Brazil has failed to reach quarterfinals or equivalent: 1920 (did not participate), 1924 (did not qualify), 1928 (did not participate), 1930 (final-4), 1934, 1966, and 1990.

The first 3 are in the Summer Olympics.

A case can be made to add 1982 to the list. Then, the quarterfinals had 12 teams; but it was still the quarterfinals. So, I didn’t put it in.

Another case can be made to remove 1930 from the list. In 1930 and 1950, there were no quarterfinals. There were a group stage followed by a final-4. In 1930, Brazil was eliminated in the group stage by Yugoslavia.

Regardless if 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 times, this should be enough to prove my point.

For instance, 17 out of 24 is 70.83%. And, at worse, there would be only 3 cases since 1938 (19 tournaments).

Monochromatic kits count: 5/6

Only England has escaped this awful trend so far.

1558312

QAT: all maroon
ECU: all yellow
IRN: all red
NED: all orange
SEN: all white
Carn oranje is arguably the greatest national kit.

Proper soccer fans, convince me that offside isn't a s**t rule and the game wouldn't be better without it
I will. Let me back between games. 🙂

What’s the population of the Netherlands and Croatia. Both got close recently.
I didn't get an alert otherwise would have answered earlier.

Netherlands population between 1974 and 1978 went from 13.5m to 14m over those 4 years and 2 finals. Argentina's population was 27m in 1978, that is the smallest for a winner since 1950.

Netherlands population in 2014 was 17m. Croatia's in 2018 was 4.1m and is now 3.9m. Has been declining since independence in 1991 when it was 4.7m.

You would find it bloody hard to find anyone who agreed with Qatar being awarded the WC but you can’t fault the passion of the fans.

Have a look at a couple of the Welsh fans.

The young lads face is priceless

14 minutes was because the Iranian goalie was concussed in the first 15 minutes of the England v Iran game, took time to get up, took a lot of time to be assessed, said he was going to play on, then within half a minute went down and was feeling ill from delayed concussion, took forever to get the stretcher on and then put him in it and then take him off. It wasn't farcical that after 4 years he tried to play on, but it was farciical how long was wasted in assessing him and then getting him off.

Great save on the line by Saudi defender after goalie went down on the box line, but it was offside so wouldn't have been a goal.

Saudi goalie I think has put his knee thru his defenders head, so this will probably add another 10 minutes to the 8 minutes of added time. Messi stuffed up the rebound the goalie got the punch in, tried too much fancy stuff and should have had a shot before defenders got to him as goalie was horribly out of place.

Saudis win after Argentina dominated the first half and got a couple of very marginal offsides against them.

Explain how 8 minutes added time stretched to 14 in the game that just finished (finally).

The defender got the goalies knee thru his head at around the 3 minute mark of extra/injury time, and it took about 5 1/2 minutes for him to be assessed and stretched off. I said 8+5 minutes on the soccer board thread.

Haha with the Argies losing, if Oz somehow managed to top group D then they probably would play the Argies as 2nd placed Group C side.

I don't expect that to happen, but Mexico topping group C now is on the cards, so a France v Argentina group of 16 knock out game is on the cards and they were 3rd ($7.50) and 2nd ($6.50) priced favourites respectively on Sunday midday odds.

Those odds are Sportsbet's with Ladbrokes in London they were 7/1 and 5/1 respectively.

Argies have blown out to $9.50 on Sportsbet after that, knowing they are going to have a lot harder group 16 knockout game.

Edit look at Ladbrokes London website and at lunchtime Wednesday is about 12 hours after the game Argies blown out to 15/2 (4th) and France down to 6/1 and 2nd favourite behind Brazil who have gone from 7/2 to 11/4 without doing anything.
