Brazil’s World Cup starts in quarterfinals.
If we don’t get there, we didn’t qualify. That’s our “par for the course”.
If you are in quarterfinals, you are a candidate for the title. So, Brazil is a perennial favourite.
Since 2006, we have been eliminated in quarterfinals. The only exception is 2014, which we finished 4th after two blowout losses at home.
Our campaigns from 1974 to 1990 were similarly disappointing. But then, as now, we still arrived at the WC as favourites.
When Brazil has failed to reach quarterfinals or equivalent: 1920 (did not participate), 1924 (did not qualify), 1928 (did not participate), 1930 (final-4), 1934, 1966, and 1990.
The first 3 are in the Summer Olympics.
A case can be made to add 1982 to the list. Then, the quarterfinals had 12 teams; but it was still the quarterfinals. So, I didn’t put it in.
Another case can be made to remove 1930 from the list. In 1930 and 1950, there were no quarterfinals. There were a group stage followed by a final-4. In 1930, Brazil was eliminated in the group stage by Yugoslavia.
Regardless if 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 times, this should be enough to prove my point.
For instance, 17 out of 24 is 70.83%. And, at worse, there would be only 3 cases since 1938 (19 tournaments).
