Makes the AFLs potato cam goal line technology look as piss weak as it is...

"Adidas have confirmed no contact was made between the World Cup matchball and Cristiano Ronaldo, thanks to a 500Hz IMU sensor and Connected Ball Technology housed in Adidas’s Al Rihla used in the tournament"

Sorensen played 101 times for Denmark, played a few games on the bench before taking over from Peter Schmeichel and played 2 or 3 seasons for Melbourne City. Spends most of the year in Oz.

The FIFA world rankings throw up some surprises, depends who they've been playing over the past year I suppose - Romania are #7 in the world according to them, Nigeria #10 and Ireland #12

So what? All teams have their golden eras. The world was a different place especially in September 1995 in Euro football, the date you set in the link. You do realise you can change the date in the box to the right of UEFA?

The famous Bosman ruling came down in December 1995 which meant the leagues in UEFA of countries who were in the European Union could no longer have restrictions like only X number of foreign players per team on the park, or each team must field Y number of nationals on the field, plus it was easier for players to move after Bosman as transfer fees were removed if a player came to the end of their contract.

Plus the formula has been tweaked several times since first version in 1992 and September 1995 link you put up. Brazil had 68 pts back then at #1 and now they have 1841.30 pts and are still #1. You get the most points for WC results, then for WC qualifiers and then for Confederation championships, then confederation cup qualifiers and all have different weightings based on who you play.

Romania actually got as high as 3 or 4. Oz's golden era saw it ranked 14th in late 2009, we had easily qualified for the 2010 WC, think the first or equal first to do so, so Oz racked up the points and many of the golden era played for 2 or 3 years before the 2010 WC before they retired.

You can't play all 211 nations each year, and you aren't going to have the best 20 nations play against each other every year because of the demands of club football, so there will always be some distortions in the rankings.

I don't know much about Ireland and Nigeria in 1995, they did make the knockout phase of 1994 WC, and Nigeria topped their group, but I know Romania had their golden era from the 1990 WC up to the qualifiers for 1998 WC in 1997 and that's when their ranking peaked.

Post Ceaușescu being thrown out and executed on Christmas day 1989, and getting rid of the communists, Romania flourished, but it had a group of great footballers that had been trained under the communist sports system who were entering their 20's. Plus it was pre Bosman so only their big stars got out and the rest staid in Romania playing in their local league and developing as a squad regularly playing together and thru their junior national teams.

They were supposed to do well in 1990 WC but Ireland got them in the Rd 16 knockout. They did well in USA at 1994 WC made the 1/4 finals. Sweden got them in the penalty shot outs. They had to great players - play maker Georghe Haghi and striker Florin Raducioiu. But eventhough Romania applied to join EU in 1993 got membersip in 2008, economic reality hit, the communist sports system died and Romanian football went backwards. Just like their Olympic sports. Between 1988 and 2000 Romania in the teens on the medal table and since Sydney in the 30s and 40s.

Bulgaria is similar story. They finished 4th in 1994 WC. Post cold war, football had a golden period, were ranked 14th in September 1995, had an absolute star striker in Hristo Stoichkov who won or finished second in FIFA player of the year a couple of times, and won a Ballon d'Or in 1994, got out after cold war ended and got to Barcelona and coached by Cruyff for the first half of the 90's.

Like Romania, Bulgaria applied for and joined the EU, but economic reality hit, their great sports system under the communists, collapsed, their football went backwards and their Olympic sports went backwards, and they went from finishing in the teens on the medal table and now usually rank between the 40s and 60s.

The endeavour and share of possession has improved but we just do not look potent or threatening near the goal. Everything feels a bit half hearted. It's a talent and a decision making problem, which is to be expected I guess. I haven't seen a single cross or pass that has looked like making Denmark panic.

Fingers crossed Australia keep defending their socks off.

Put the gooooaaaalll in the wrong thread, but finally Leckie converts. Need that after Tunsia scored 5 minutes earlier.

I said I don't trust France and for good reason. 9 changes and they are playing half arsed.

**** me the French finally score after the whistle in the oz game. last kick of the game they equalize.
