The most interesting thing is that it seems there are clubs taken by surprise.

How can this be possible? The league commissioner can’t have autonomy to do something like that. It wouldn’t make any sense if he did.

I don't know how the A league is set up but it wouldn't surprise if it is like the AFL where the admin can make decisions independent of the clubs.

I'm not sure if any league in this country is set up where the clubs are required for changes to be brought in.

The AFL extended the continued use of the MCG for GFs until 2057 on the back of some big state government backing. A similar thing seems to have happened here obviously on a smaller scale. I doubt there was a collaborative consultation process prior to the AFL’s decision.
They understand where the power is centred.

In December 2020 the FFA handed over the running of the A League to the clubs/private owners who had been agitating for change - after losing $250-$300m in the first 15 years. FIFA backed the disolving of power as the top UEFA model is the Football Association runs the national teams and have control of the rules and the game at amateur level and a company where the club owners have a share each in the company and appoint a CEO independent of the Football Association run the top league or the top 2 to 4 leagues.

In Oz they set up the APL - Australian Professional Leagues - it has a board to represent the 12 clubs but not ever club has a director representing their club on that board. And the CEO is an ex Sydney FC CEO.

"This is a unique opportunity to build a tradition for football fans," APL CEO and former Sydney FC boss Danny Townsend said.


But the fallout has started. 30 minutes ago


Melbourne Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro has resigned from the Australian Professional Leagues board amid “overwhelming” backlash over a deal to move to A-League grand finals to Sydney and urged officials to “consider an alternative”.
The move comes as A-League boss Danny Townsend committed to standing by their “conviction” despite threats of walkouts by fans this weekend after it was announced the grand final would be played in Sydney for the next three years, and not in the home state of the highest ranked qualifier.

Backlash has gone beyond all expectations after Monday’s announcement by the APL, which runs the competition, in a deal with the NSW government believed to be worth around $20 million.

Townsend was adamant the decision was unanimous among the APL board which includes club representatives but reigning premiers Western United hit out at the decision declaring “our club isn’t represented on the APL board” and it didn’t support the move.

Then late on Tuesday afternoon Di Pietro resigned from his APL directors role in response to the fallout declaring he “cannot support maintaining a decision which is not in the best interests of the loyal Melbourne Victory faithful and football”.

“My resignation was ultimately driven by the decision announced yesterday, that sees the next three Grand Finals being hosted in Sydney,” he said in a statement.

“While I know first-hand the decision by APL was made with a view to growing the game and creating financial sustainability for the League, the fan and member sentiment has been overwhelming and I cannot support maintaining a decision which is not in the best interests of the loyal Melbourne Victory faithful and football.

“As such, together with (managing director, Caroline Carnegie), we have urged APL to pause this plan and consider an alternative that supports the growth and stability of the League while also allowing both the Men’s and Women’s A-League Grand Finals to continue to be played in the city of the highest ranked qualifier.”

His resignation came as Western United released a statement saying “the reaction of our fans over the last 24 hours speaks volumes”.

“Our Club isn’t represented on the APL board, and we weren’t consulted on the decision announced yesterday,” the statement said.

“Western United is a young club that is being built for the football fans in the west of Melbourne and Victoria. We strongly believe that they are entitled to attend a Grand Final in their home state should we be successful in earning the right to do so.”


Even Sydney FC's supporters are against it.

According to former Socceroo and media personality Rob Cornthwaite, the APL called an emergency board meeting on Tuesday to review the delivery of the announcement.
 
Shows how far I'm behind things, I've been calling it FFA for 2 years but when there was the unbundling of the game's structure in December 2020, the FFA - Football Federation of Australia changed its name to Football Australia. The name change happened on 16 December 2020 and the new structure was formalized and started / announced on 31 December 2020.

I've said for about 4 years now, the AFL Commission has to be split in 2. Have the AFL Custodial Commissioners who look after the game at all levels re the rules and affiliated leagues and have real football people in these positions and have AFL Competition Commissioners run the AFL competition and this is where the business people who know how to make lots of money, but have little history in the game get appointed in as these commissioners position.

Football Australia and the newly formed Australian Professional Leagues (APL) today announced that terms have been agreed to ‘unbundle’ the A-League, Westfield W-League and Y-League (‘Professional Leagues’) from Football Australia.​

This unbundling of the Professional Leagues from Football Australia means that the Australian football structure will be in line with global best practice in football, separating Football Australia as the regulatory body from the operation of the Professional Leagues.

In accordance with the FIFA Statutes, the Professional Leagues will operate under the umbrella of and recognised by Football Australia as the top tier of domestic league football competitions in Australia.

APL will take over the operational, commercial, and marketing control of the Professional Leagues and all revenue generation responsibilities.

Football Australia will retain regulatory functions in respect of the Professional Leagues, including matters relating to on-and-off-field disciplinary and integrity matters, the registration of Clubs, Players and Officials, the transfer system, and the domestic match calendar.

The regulatory functions of Football Australia also include a new club licensing framework for the Professional Leagues and control over access to the Professional Leagues (whether by expansion, contraction, or promotion/relegation), the AFC Champions League, FFA Cup and all other domestic and international competitions.

Football Australia will also retain ‘good of the Australian game’ rights in respect of the Professional Leagues, which apply to a variety of matters that are aimed at ensuring the ongoing growth of the Professional Leagues.

As part of the unbundling, the APL will also obtain the exclusive right to use the intellectual property rights associated with the E-League brand.

This agreement, approved by Football Australia’s Board and the Board of each Club, is in line with the in-principle agreement reached in 2019 and endorsed by the New Leagues Working Group (‘NLWG’), the body mandated by the Congress of Football Australia to make recommendations for a new model for the Professional Leagues.

The new model for the Professional Leagues will be implemented throughout the course of the A-League 2020/21 and Westfield W-League 2020/21 Seasons.

The APL Board will comprise of five (5) directors from the Clubs, three (3) independent directors, and one (1) person appointed by Football Australia. An independent Chair to be elected by the Clubs and ratified by Football Australia, will have a casting vote on the APL Board.

Greg O’Rourke, currently Head of Leagues at Football Australia, will take on a new role as Commissioner of the Professional Leagues for APL.

James Johnson, CEO of Football Australia, said:​

“The unbundling of the Professional Leagues from Football Australia is a key milestone in the ongoing transformation of Australian football and fulfils our commitment outlined in Principle VIII of our XI Principles. It represents the culmination of a process, which ramped up following the completion of the A-League 2019/20 season, that ebbed and flowed over the course of what has been a difficult 2020.

“The new model respects the fundamental aspects of the global football pyramid and highlights the importance of strong governance principles as Football Australia retains its regulatory functions in respect of the A-League, Westfield W-League and Y-League and the APL takes control over the operational and commercial direction of the Leagues, in turn triggering the ability for significant new investment in the quality and marketing of the Leagues. Each constituent now has defined roles and responsibilities and the ability to make the right contribution to the growth of the professional game.

“We have been able to create a unique model which draws upon global best practice whilst allowing for local specificities. Significantly, the model establishes a framework for a strong partnership between Football Australia and the APL which recognises the value of a thriving domestic professional league to the ongoing growth of the game in Australia.”

Paul Lederer, Chair of APL, said:​

“This is an historic moment for the future of football in Australia – for the fan, for the player, for the whole game.

“It’s now time to earn and deliver the future our game deserves.

“The handbrake on the game is off; owners can finally invest in what they own and create value for the entire footballing ecosystem.

“Players can plan their careers in Australian football, fans can reconnect with the game that they love, and clubs can create meaningful moments for the whole Australian football family.”

Chris Nikou, Chair of Football Australia, said:​

“There is unprecedented unity amongst football’s key stakeholders with Football Australia, Clubs, and the Members of Football Australia, being the group making up the NLWG, that paved the way to the unbundling of the A-League, W-League and Y-League from Football Australia.

“Football Australia will now focus its energies and resources on the regulation of the professional game, national teams, grassroots and the overall strategic direction of the game as outlined in the XI Principles for the future of Australian Football, the new 15-year vision for the sport and strategic agenda.

“All parties are committed to ongoing cooperation and collaboration and we look forward to working closely with the APL this season as we transition to the new model, and more broadly, the future of professional football in Australia."

I'll give it till the end of the week before they reverse the decision on the A League grand finals. It is our equivalent of the backtracking of the Super League in Europe 2 years ago.

12 directors from 12 clubs would be very hard work and not much would get done.

The guys that have lost $250-$300m and will probably lose more $$$ voted for a half independent board. Its pribably why the ceo has so much power and went and did a deal that was good for the bottom line but looks like he didnt communicate with all the clubs.

I was hoping you would be right but it looks like they are sticking with the money



Lets see if the planned fan walkout at this weeks games can impact the decision.

They must be getting something more than the $10m for the 3 GFs from Destination NSW to so quickly back this decision.

Reckon a side deal has been done, around next years Women's World Cup might be part of the total package from NSW government. Might not be much $$' but lots of free exposure and access to NSW government infrastructure and services.

Or maybe the NSW government will jump on board and sponsor the A League \ Womens like the Vic government are sponsoring Super Netball comp.
 
Its not just the next 3 men's GF that will be in Sydney but also the next 3 women's GF as well and "other events."

It's an interesting statement given Piet has his name attributed to it and he has told the Red Army tonight that he does not approve of this grand final movement and neither does AUFC.

I don't think this is going to be the last we have heard of this.

GER-ARG also happened in 2014.

Those are the only repeat finals in WC history.
