I did a Gremio and did some WC stats.

Home Ground advantage

Host and Win, 6 nations - 4 European + 2 South American nations
1930 Uruguay
1934 Italy
1966 England
1974 West Germany
1978 Argentina
1998 France

Host and Lose Final, 2 nations - 1 European + 1 South American nation
1950 Brazil
1958 Sweden

Host and Lose SF, 5 nations - 2 European + 2 South American + 1 Asian nation
1962 Chile to Brazil 2-4 who won the WC
1990 Italy to Argentina 1-1, 3-4 on penalties
2002 South Korea to Germany 0-1
2006 Germany to Italy 0-2 who won the WC
2014 Brazil to Germany 1-7 who won the WC

So 13 of 22 times ( Belgium won World Championship at 1920 Olympics in Antwerp)

Host and Lose QF, 5 nations - 3 European nations + 2 CONCACAF nations
1938 France to Italy 1-3 who won the WC
1954 Switzerland to Austria 5-7 who finished 3rd
1970 Mexico to Italy 1-2 who finished 2nd
1986 Mexico to Germany 0-0 penalties 1-4 who finished 2nd
2018 Russia to Croatia 3-4 who finished 2nd

Host and Lose Rd 16 game, 2 nations - 1 European + 1 CONCACAF
1994 USA to Brazil 0-1 who won the WC
1982 Spain** went from Group stage 6 x 4 to 2nd Rd 4 groups x 3 but didn't progress to SFs
**** Japan as Co-host lost Rd 16 to Turkey

Host and don't get out of the Group, 2 nations - 1 Africa + 1 Asian
2010 South Africa 1W-1D-1L 3rd in group, Uruguay topped the group, finished 4th, FIFA say South Africa finished 20th or 32 nations Oz 21st
2022 Qatar 0W-0D-3L 4th in group, Netherlands topped it, FIFA say Qatar finished 31st and Canada 32nd - Oz 11th.

So whilst we don't know the final format for 2026 history says the likelihood is Mexico lose a 1/4 or semi final, USA Rd 16 game or 1/4 final and Canada don't progress past the group stage and the eventual WC winner will knock one of the three out.

Talking of home ground advantage, Argentina have played where the final will be, Lusail Stadium 4 times to France's Nil. Not sure how the split of tickets will be, but Saudi were the effective home team in the first game as they had the most fans and Argentina were the effective home team the other 3 games.

If we are going to go there, Alfredo Di Stéfano was better than everyone else but largely unknown in these parts of the world. Unfortunately, he played during a period of time when Argentina wasn't doing well at the international level.
Di Stéfano suffers from playing for Argentina for only a year, then a year for Colombia when he went and played 4 years there for Millionarios in his 20's, and then didn't get to play for Spain until he was 32 or 33 when they weren't much chop.

So he doesn't have that international level pedigree that Pele and Maradonna have.

His record for his clubs at River Plate, at Millionarios and at Real Madrid is probably unsurpassed. I think 15 league titles across 3 national competitions, 5 European Cups, won many other silverware titles for his clubs, and so many individual awards.

He is like Ronaldo so much more success at club level, didnt play for a big dominate national team, but unlike Ronaldo not much of it was shown live on TV or is on tape for people around the world and the following generations to see.

You’ve mentioned 1920 (Begium - champions). Here, the other two pre-WC tournaments:

1924, France - QF
1928, The Netherlands - R16

Both lost to Uruguay, who were the champions.

---

So, out of 25 tournaments, the hosts won 7 times: 1920, 1930, 1934, 1966, 1974, 1978, 1998.
- BEL, URU, ITA, ENG, GER, ARG, FRA.

They were eliminated by the eventual champions 9 times: 1924, 1928, 1938, 1950, 1958, 1962, 1994, 2006, 2014.
- FRA, NED, FRA, BRA, SWE, CHI, USA, GER, BRA.

In 10 other times (2002 had 2 hosts), the hosts were eliminated by sides who didn't win it all: 1954, 1970, 1982, 1986, 1990, 2002, 2010, 2018, 2022.
- SUI, MEX, ESP, MEX, ITA, JAP/KOR, RSA, RUS, QAT.

I’ve just checked it. He has played in the 1962 World Cup (Spain also had Puskas!), but he wasn’t in the squad for the 1964 Euro. Spain won it.

I would still prefer doing like rugby and having one host, even if other countries help with extra venues.

North America World Cup sounds weird.

Morocco v Croatia at the 45.8k Khalifa International Stadium and not the second biggest stadium the 68.9k Al Bayt Stadium.

Probably figured they wouldn't sell out the larger stadium before the tournament, but Morocco have over 40k fans in Qatar, so they could have sold it out.

Game starts 6pm local time - 3pm GMT - 12noon Gremio time - 2am AEST - 1.30am ACST - 11pm Perth time.

The final is the same time.

I initially though why wouldn't it be closer to 7pm start, prime time in central Europe time. After thinking about it a bit, I reckon they have taken the China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesian time into account ie oriental Asian market, FIFA's big growth market and make it a bit friendly for them.

China time is same as Perth, Japan and South Korea 12 midnight, and Jakarta is 10pm.

So they have all of the Americas covered from 9am thru to Japan is a midnight start. So most of the world is awake to watch it.

Sounds like more than just a protest against Grand Finals in Sydney...

EDIT: Well it was about that, but Melbourne Victory 'fans' took it to another level, throwing flares on the pitch and assaulting players and officials. The City goalie had a bin thrown at him, giving him a gashed head and a concussion. The match has just been abandoned

The A-League Men Melbourne derby between City and Victory has descended into chaos after a violent pitch invasion brought the game at AAMI Park to a halt at the 20th minute.
Fans from both clubs hurled flares onto the pitch, but when City goalkeeper Tom Glover threw two flares back into the Victory fans area at the northern end, it sparked a wild reaction as scores of Victory fans stormed the pitch, and encircled Glover in scary scenes.

Then one Victory fan grabbed a bucket and threw it into Glover’s face, instantly cutting the City custodian’s face wide open.

Haha I flicked over about 20 minutes ago and there was fishing program on when the EPG said A League game was on and thought WTF is going on. Just flicked over again and saw an FBI program is on.

Is any publicity good publicity at the moment for Oz soccer?

Australian soccer shooting itself in the foot seems to be the regular game plan to me, for decades.

Never mind just watch this bloody third place game lol a goal a piece seven minutes in !!!

Third place celebrating more than if they finished second.

Odd, but I don't mind it.

Winner takes all attitude of elite sport can sometimes shit me. Winner takes most, but pay dues to those who challenged them. Especially in a sport like soccer where there can be almost nothing between them. Unlike footy where for instance, Port Adelaide 2021 did not deserve anything, because the nature of the game allows results to be more definitive.

With 48 teams, this will happen less and less (one host).
The US could have hosted alone. Mexico, too. FIFA decided for multiple hosts.

It does put pressure if they are trying to still fit the tournament in to a month with all the extra games.

I agree though, they could. Im saying i dont think they will with the new format.

I dont mind much either way. It was awesome to see individual countries put themselves on show, but Korea/Japan was done well too. It also increases the legitimacy of an Australian bid, as we would get to use Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, etc.

The ****ing balls of Victorian fans complaining that another city will get grand finals must be massive!!

Protesting against the decision I'm totally fine with. Its a cash grab designed to make the playing field unequal (just like the AFL) and hurts grassroots across the country. People should fight back. The original idea of walking out at the 20 minute mark was a good one.

Running on to the pitch as a pack of cowardly thugs, hitting people from behind, is just pathetic and disgusting. They've done their cause way more harm than good.
