Wouldn’t happen though. Oceania currently have a 0.5 allocation so if the amount of teams were doubled to 64 they’d only have that upgraded to 1. It’s extremely unlikely that Solomon Islands, as the 141st ranked team, would ever beat New Zealand for that 1 spot.

It’s possible that we’d see a few more smashings but there’s only so many elite teams in the world and I don’t think there’s a massive gulf in the quality of the rest up to a ranking of about 50 or 60-odd. Ghana is ranked 61st atm and they’re pretty handy.

Congrats Argentina!

Just built in to that tournament nicely. I remember when they struggled to put away Australia I thought surely these blokes won't get through Brazil and France, but they got better with each game, and were clearly the better side in the final.

France will always be hurt by this one but with their injury toll and the virus which clearly affected them they should hold their heads up high. Probably smashed and depleted more than any other side in the whole tournament outside of Senegal, yet still finished second and pushed the final to the absolute death.

Yeah I thought the same. The yellow for the dive was spot on too. Really nailed it and I don't think either side could complain...

That ESPN article I posted a few days back about 48 teams in 2026 mentioned that if there had been 48 teams at Qatar, and hypothetically including the next 16 teams that did miss qualification, Italy would still not have qualified.

Yep - that's the thing, it would take most of the need for qualifying away and just have one, ultra-simple tournament. Every game would be a knockout. Every game winner take all. All the small teams get a chance to share the field with a top side. Penalties possible from day 1.

It's revolutionary but its honestly not AS crazy as it initially sounds. It would better mirror the Olympics too (206 "countries" represented in 2020).

I still think its not as good as 32 which is the ideal sweet spot, but I'm not convinced its a worse idea than 64.
