FIFA on Wednesday stripped Indonesia of the right to stage this year's Under-20 soccer World Cup, over what an Indonesian official said was a failure to honour its commitments to the tournament.

The decision to stop Indonesia holding the May 20-June 11 event was taken after the country's football federation (PSSI) said it had cancelled the draw because the governor of the largely Hindu island of Bali refused to host Israel's team.

"FIFA has decided, due to the current circumstances, to remove Indonesia as the host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023," a FIFA statement said.
 
Watching the Matildas v Scotland on a rare bright, sunny day in the UK - apart from the close up shots, both teams appear to be wearing a light coloured uniform, hard to tell who's who. It doesn't help that Scotland have a player called Sam Kerr too!

Arse left it very late to salvage a point against relegation bound Southampton, opening the door again for Man City, but delivering St Totteringham's Day - Arse now 22 points ahead of Spurs, who have only 7 games remaining.

Yeah our our only hope is they are juggling to much now.. disappointing the last few weeks just hope we can get out of this rut and put up a fight

Well city of Naples is about to go off. Only their third championship and first since Maradona led them to championship wins in 86/87 & 89/90.

Since 1990, Napoli have been bankrupted and sent to third division as a result but have made their way back through the lower leagues and now the top of Serie A. Personally not the same as winning the championship in 1990 when Serie A was the pinnacle of football but an achievement all the same.

It's no coincidence that when the 'legitimate' money in the Italian league effectively dries up relegating it to a secondary league the hidden money of Napoli start to fly. H

Not sure where you're going with 'legitimate' money in Italy. When discussing anything as being legitimate in Italy you could have a lifetime of debates about it 🤣 From mafia, to tax avoidance, Dodgy ownership from Gaddafi to foreign investment from the US during the cold war era which help fund the Dolce vita years. These days financial fair play rules just another layer.

However to be fair to de laurentiis he's always been critisicised for selling or letting go of too many of his best players. Even last summer after Koulibaly, Insigne and Mertens left not many would have given Napoli a chance at the start of this season.

I’m saying the club best at working the system are currently top.

It’s mad how little money Italian football makes compared to the other big leagues. Championship teams in England pay more!

In the 90’s you could only get Italian football on TV in Wales so people my age are well invested in it.

Juve will work out how to get around it soon enough 😂.
 
I was introduced to Serie A on the back of the 82 World Cup and was in Rome when Roma won the Scudetto in 83, so was immediately hooked and followed closely through to the Mourinho treble in 2010.

Early 80s in Australia the coverage was limited to SBS showing the occasional game, until SBS started showing a weekly Serie A highlights package with Martin Tyler as commentator in the late 80s. The show didnt hit our screens in Australia until the weekend after they were played 😁
I used to have to settle for radio for live coverage and if I fell asleep would need to call a 1300 SBS hotline for overnight results otherwise the Monday Italian paper print that came out in Adelaide around 1.30pm.

Ah the kids today don't know how spoilt they are 🤪

Beginning of the end for Serie A for me was euro 96. New stadiums on the back of Premier League international appeal just started printing money and eventually the players followed.

During the same period, Italian stadiums still owned predominately by councils deteriorated into historic concrete bowls. With the Italian economy about to sign up to the euro and austerity measures from the EU, the stars slowly left for the bigger monies on offer from the Premier League and La Liga and pay TV rights and sponsors left with them. 2006 World Cup in Germany also help trigger the Bundesliga passing Serie A.

Note this is just a tragic's humble view and not a REH research piece 😁

Its pretty much spot on.

The Italians didn't invest in stadiums, they didn't equally share TV monies or have central distribution like EPL and Bundesliga, teams did individual deals, they didn't crack down on racism and violence so its not a female and family friendly environment at stadiums and crowds dropped off.

Plus you had the Bosman ruling in 1995 in EU, so countries couldn't have rules about only playing x number of foreigners, so the other 3 big leagues pounced hardest, rather than the Italians, so over time, the product wasn't as good, and international TV $$$ didn't grow for Serie A like the other leagues.

The EPL has the advantage of English being more of a global language than the other languages, they grew international sales and they now get slightly more TV/Media revenue from international sales than domestic sales. Also helps that soccer is becoming big business in USA and NBC bought EPL rights a couple of years ago for $2.7bil over 6 years. The other leagues can't and don't compete with that.

Forgot about the Bosman ruling, fond memories of Milans's Dutch connection v Inter's German syndicate and Napoli's South American connection with Maradona, Careca and Alemao.

Fair point too re the violence in the terraces. English clubs were banned from Europe after the Heysel disaster and really clamped down going into Euro 96, whereas the ultras in Serie A still give the vibes that they run the show.

Suspect those days will never be repeated and eventually there will be a super league funded predominately by the middle East and US dollars.
