The Liverpool with better colours won the Opening Tournament in Uruguay. With this result, the club has earned a spot in the Finals and will finish the season at least in the Top-3.

Liverpool is not one of Uruguay’s Big-2 (Nacional & Peñarol), but it has been very successful locally since 2019 — including a national league title in 2023.

The line in the last 20 seconds is the best of them all by Ange, but there is a nice bit of the Ted Whitten's we stuck it up them.

Sunderland UNBELIEVABLE!

The winning goal at 49’/2H, coming from behind.

Promoted to the Premier League.

Good on 'em, but will they just become cannon fodder like so many of the promotees do and head straight back down? I think edgie said that they don't have petrodollars or Hollywood star backing - maybe they can pick up a few ManU castoffs.

It will be hard to stay up but it should significantly help keep a few players that were almost certain to be lost to bigger clubs or bigger leagues if we didn't get promoted. The team had enormous resilience, all play off games were won in the dying minutes.

Haha Ange came up with a couple of more great quotes at his presser after the parade / before the last match of the year.

Re the 3rd season line;

“I should have thought about it a bit more because as somebody rightly pointed out, sometimes they kill off the main character. I could be in strife there,” Postecoglou told reporters on Saturday.

And pulled out this one from Seinfeld

Postecoglou, who has two years to run on his contract, said: “I just refuse to be distracted by anything in terms of the opportunity that was before us. “And since the game, I just wanted to take the opportunity also to enjoy that as well.

“I haven’t thought about it. I assume at some point somebody will tell me something. If not, I’m just gonna roll up next year and be a bit like Costanza from Seinfeld. I’ll just sit in the desk and get on with my job.”

Will bloody Hinkley do a Costanza?

The header to win the semis with the last touch of the ball the week before was more unbelievable

Bloke folded himself up like a deck chair to get his head to it in the 122nd minute

Yes. I had it in mind when I posted. It happened in two consecutive games.

Newcastle tried really hard to stuff up Champions League qualification at the final hurdle and were saved by Man U of all teams. tribey

Woke up this morning to the LiveScore alert and assumed the worst. Would’ve been the most Newcastley thing ever.

Villa stiff, but we won’t mind ♥️

The Argentine League has defined the teams that will play in the Grand Final. Two underdogs.

I've written about the clubs and their path to the Decider (including highlight videos) here:

Finally worked out what Tottenham's win means where they rank in Europe in 2024-25 season and the integration with Champions League teams.

Champions League starts off with 81 teams. 28 teams from lowest ranked associations ie champions in their nations' league the previous year play a home and away leg and the 14 losers get knocked out of all European competition for the year. That means the champions of places like San Marino, Andorra, Faroe Islands etc don't usually advance in Europe.

So 81 becomes 67. Then through the various knock out stages, 31 get knocked out and transfer to Europa League.

36 remain in the League Phase and everyone plays 8 games 4 at home and 4 away. Teams are put into 4 pots of 9 teams and that's how you get the 8 games. And a Ladder of results is produced and teams end up being ranked 1st to 36th.

From that 36 --> 12 are knocked out and don't transfer to the Europa League.

The home and away knockout phase starts with teams tanked 9th to 24 playing ie 9v24, 10v23 ...... 16v17

The 8 winners play the teams ranked 1-8th in round of 16 and then usual knockout 1/4 and semi finals with home and away legs with the grand final being a single game.

Same thing happens in Europa League. So Tottenham winning effectively means they are the 37th best team in Europe in 2024-25.

For being the 37th best team in Europe you win -
  • Champion: €8,600,000

29 of the 81 best teams from the biggest leagues in Champions League come in at the League Phase.

The other 52 teams can progress down to the Playoff Round, but 14 get eliminated, 31 transfer to Europa League and 7 advance to the League Phase.

The 14 teams that get to the Play-off Round get the following
  • Play-off round: €4,290,000
and the 7 that advance are guaranteed the base fee League Phase monies.

If you make the final 36 in the Champions League, ie League Phase you get
  • Base fee for league phase: €18,620,000
  • League phase victory: €2,100,000
  • League phase draw: €700,000
  • League phase top 8: €2,000,000
  • League phase ranked 9 through 16: €1,000,000
  • Knockout round play-offs: €1,000,000
  • Round of 16: €11,000,000
  • Quarter-finals: €12,500,000
  • Semi-finals: €15,000,000
  • Runners-up: €18,500,000
  • Champions: €25,000,000
Then there is a distribution of TV rights monies called the "market pool", the distribution of which is determined by the value of the television market in each nation.

For the 2019–20 season, Paris Saint-Germain, who were the runners-up, earned nearly €126.8 million in total, of which €101.3 million was prize money, compared with the €125.46 million earned by Bayern Munich, who won the tournament and were awarded €112.96 million in prize money.

Tottenham winning Europa means they get a Champions League slot next year and a combo of prize money, TV monies and home game revenue its supposed to be worth over €100 million to them.

Tottenham comes into 2025-26 Champions League at the League Phase ie where the 29 teams this year came in at.

I love the piss take Scottish Commentary of old games by #mckallaster . Think he is a Scottish bloke who lives in USA as he does his special commentary on a lot of MLS games as well as classic old games. Love his stuff when he commentates the old England games.

FA Cup winners Crystal Palace might not get a spot in Europe after all...

Crystal Palace remain confident of Europa League spot ahead of crunch UEFA talks

Crystal Palace are due to meet UEFA officials on Tuesday as they plead their case to be allowed to compete in Europe next season.

If Palace are to keep their place in the Europa League, they must convince UEFA’s club financial control body at the formal hearing in Switzerland that they do not fall foul of its multi-club ownership rules.

Palace qualified for the competition by stunning Manchester City to win the FA Cup at Wembley last month, the first piece of major silverware in the club’s history.

Their co-owner John Textor holds a 43 per cent stake in the club through his Eagle Football multi-club group, which also owns a controlling 88 per cent stake in French club Lyon, who qualified for the Europa League by finishing sixth in Ligue 1.

UEFA rules states that no individual is allowed to have “control or influence” over the running of two clubs competing in the same competition.

Well that is shit for crystal palace.

Hope they get in.

Bloody hell the Socceroos like making hard work of world cup qualifiers.

Win tonight and we are off to North America. 65 minutes gone and its 0-0 v Japan's B side, they qualified after last qualifying game, the 8th of 10 in this round and they have dominated the play.

We are on 13 pts and Saudis on 10. Saudis play Bahrain tonight, away and they should go to 13 pts. We need a draw as a minimum to keep things alive as next week we play the Saudis over there.

And after 90 seconds of injury time we get the first stoppage for injury in the match with a heavy clash heads. Probably will take 5 minutes.
