Hold off and finally beat Japan after 16 years.

So Oz are 16 pts with 1 game to go v Saudis with +8 Goal Difference and Saudis play Bahrain in a few hours then us next week and have 10 pts and a -2 Goal Difference. So not officially going to North America yet but Saudis will need a miracle.

However this is only Rd 3 of 5 in Asian Qualifiers. 6 teams qualify after this round, 2 more in the 4th and then in 5th round 1 team gets to play an Inter-Continental game to try and qualify.

Simon Hill only called 1 WC campaign - 2006 when he was working at SBS.

SBS have done the World Cup since he left and we have gotten Martin Tyler for the big games and bloody David Basheer for the Socceroos games.

SBS didn't get the A-League rights so he went to Foxtel after the A-league's first season and called the 2007 GF all the way thru to the 2019 GF - 13 GFs in a row.

Got sacked from Foxtel during the 2019-20 season when it got shut down due to covid and big cutbacks as Foxtel was losing subscribers and hadn't got Kayo up and running yet in any meaningful way. Did freelance stuff and started working for SEN in Sydney for 18 months or so before he got the gig at 10/Paramount+ when they got the rights in mid 2021 starting with the 2021-22 season and has done the last 4 GFs.

But he has done over 150 Socceroos games including WC qualifiers and Asian Cup qualifiers and tournaments as Foxtel and 10/Paramount+ have had rights to those games.





 
Feels like there has been so many times in qualification that we end up playing the top side when they desperately need to win, then some other side gets them after they've already qualified and are taking the piss. Nice for the reverse to finally be true.

Just need to not lose to KSA by 8 goals and we're in.
 
I will say if I look at the other 3rd/4th teams... UAE, Qatar, Iraq, Oman, KSA and Indonesia, I reckon the Saudis would be favourites to get a spot in the fourth round anyway. There is only one team outside of the middle east, and its guaranteed to stay that way even if Palestine knock out one of the others.

Just realised KSA don't need to beat us by 8 goals... because every goal they score is worth double in the goal difference - it increases our goals against at the same time as it increases their goals for. Its closer than I thought and a massive choke could still see us miss the automatic spots.

They can't. It's impossible. A 4-goal loss favours Australia, regardless.

Saudi Arabia can only be up in Goals Scored if they are also up in Goal Differential. Every goal they concede it would be scored by Australia.

Just need to lose 4 - 0 and celebrate :)
 
Made it with style... really nice to be in early this time and now we can sit back and just enjoy all those who aren't qualified killing each other

We join Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Uzbekistan and New Zealand as the other qualified teams so far (in addition to the previous winner and 3 hosts)
