Worner to stay, toughest and bravest defender we have, plays like he's the 23rd pick every week

Chappy is having a worse start to the season - for a top 15 pick, Pickforks should be coming for him

Karl Worner is pretty underrated around these parts.

Only wanted him dropped earlier so people didn’t think I had some bias for him over our actual worse performer in our backline.

Butts could struggle if he is selected. I can't believe he was allowed back on the ground after copping a big headbutt and being clearly dazed. Looked like a concussion to me. I don't care what the cognitive tests say, I don't think they are foolproof.

And Butts now officially ruled out for 2 weeks with concussion. Adelaide saying he presented with "delayed concussion symptoms". What an absolute joke. I could see he was concussed with my eyes. No wonder why there are lawsuits being thrown at the AFL and/or medicos.

Torn on whether or not I want Dawson back for the Crows, one I'd like us to have more of a chance to win....but he's also in my fantasy team. Plus would like our midfield to test themselves against the best possible.

Chappy has had an ordinary start to the season, but watch this weeks replay again and see the I50s delivered perfectly for the leading forward, Worner doesn’t bring that to the table.
which is why he could be good on the wing.

I used to think this, but after what we've seen with Young, I'm not sure it is a good idea. Chapman has a history of hamstring issues and this could only get worse shifting him up the ground.

If we are going to do it, I'd be looking at a rotation between Worner, Chapman, McVee. But it seems we want our backs to simply play as backs only. Maybe Wagner the only exception, but we've largely moved him out of the backline.

Maybe so, but that is a colossal waste of jet fuel! So much for a club guided by sustainability.
Lol you think they’re taking private jets like the NBA or something

Unless you’re just fishing

In which case I wholeheartedly endorse this board as a primo spot to wet a line

We should win if he plays anyway. Let him play, and get 50 possession for -40m's gained.

Walker on Rankin is commonsense, but for some bizzare reason Worner is untouchable. Worner, respectfully, is a very average footballer with minimal afl attributes. Average decision maker, average ball use and zero composure
This sounds EXACTLY like another bloke in our backline? But goddamn, bring his name up and the vultures come swarming.

As Worner's buddy I feel obliged to respond to the most egregious parts.

  • Very average footballer - guilty as charged, played 34 games when the average is about 50 and median around 25, and in his fifth year when an average career is just over 5 years
  • Minimal AFL attributes - he got a glowing endorsement from Serong on his courage and it's clear he puts his body on the line, his running has improved, his disposal is fine although his decision making is clearly an area for improvement, and he has the flexibility to play across a range of types
  • Zero composure - he's a long way from perfect but he's had some great moments at times too

While it may be bizarre to you, Worner is a bit of an old school utility in defence.
Like all young players he's got plenty to work on, and there's no issues if he goes out if there's a better team balance, but right now he offers a fair bit.

Worner being courageous and tough is awesome, not being sarcastic, but God I'm sick to death of hearing this.

Is that seriously his number one attribute? Because that's everyone's go to argument. This game requires skill.

Glowing endorsement means nothing, what player wouldn't speak highly of a fellow team-mate? Remember when Fyfe and Mundy said Tucker is about to break out as a midfielder? Exactly.

Worner is either just in or just out and right now he should be out

Worner is a bloody good footballer and that's why he is getting a game. Fearless, committed to the contest, great one on one and a good quality intercept marker.

His ball in hand composure is improving along with his kicking decision making; they are still relatively poor. They will need to improve more if he wants to graduate from a 80 to 120 game role player to a 150+ one.

Glowing enddoe
Good for you, you don't value it.
AFL ain't kick to kick mate.

What?

AFL midfielders ranked by metres gained per possession in 2025

1. Callaghan, F 23.2
2. Daicos, N 21.8
3. Smith, B 21.3
4. Dawson, J 20.8

our best Serong, C 15.9

Good for you, you value toughness over skill and composure. Game requires skill champ
I never said I valued it over other traits, you were the one bagging him out and I was simply pointing out what Worner brings to the table.

The game requires lots of different attributes, there's lot of examples with players having great traits but not being able to make it at modern AFL level because they don't have the athleticism or the strength as well.
Then there's players with amazing skill and composure like Lukosius who still don't make it to amazing levels because they lack some of what Worner has - an AFL level trait if you don't mind.
