Has the AFL deliberately made round one the Round of Opposites? Consider the following:
Demons vs. Saints: That one should be fairly obvious.
Kangaroos vs. Collingwood: One has money. The other one has none.
Brisbane vs. Hawthorn: One is based in the far north. The other is now based in the far south.
Sydney vs. West Coast: Drug-f*cked party club vs. the club that cries to Mummy when they lose a Grand Final. (Ie. Interesting club vs Boring club)
Adelaide vs. Essendon: Long, proud history vs. Corporate Franchise
Western Bulldogs vs. Geelong: Cats vs, Dogs, no explanation necessary
Carlton vs. Richmond: One club either finishes on top of the ladder or in the finals, or on the bottom. The other just finishes dead ninth.
The only one I couldnt think of anything for was Port and Freo, but I'm sure their is something there, or maybe they were just the two club left.
