Completely agree. We should be picking the team that gives us the best chance of winning and for mine Howlett probably shouldn't be anywhere near the best 22 unless there's a raft of injuries, and then you've got the likes of Bellchambers, Stanton, Myers & Hocking all potentially on the fringe next year somewhere in that best 18-30 range.

Having said that I think the club will ensure all of the returning players are at the game whether it be playing or sitting amongst the crowd.

It's tough to predict but depending on individual pre-seasons, etc. I'd say the round one team could be:
B: Michael Hurley - Michael Hartley - Mark Baguley
HB: Brendon Goddard - Cale Hooker - Andrew McGrath
C: Travis Colyer - Jobe Watson - David Zaharakis
R: Matthew Leuenberger - Dyson Heppell - Zach Merrett
HF: Kyle Langford - Joe Daniher - Jayden Laverde
F: Orazio Fantasia - Tom Bellchambers - Aaron Francis
I/C: Darcy Parish - David Myers - Brent Stanton - Heath Hocking

No walla?

I dont think mcgrath or francis play round 1 next year

Baguley Hartley Ambrose
Gleeson Hurley Stanton
Colyer Watson Myers
Fantasia Daniher Zaharakis
Goddard Hooker Hocking

Luey Heppell Zaka

I/C Belchambers Howlett Parish Langford

If the club are serious about the future they both should play.

Practice match form will take care of that. Let's say McGrath racks up 25-30 disposals off half back in a game or two of nab challenge he'd be a lock for round one like Heppell was. And Francis in similar situation - pre-season form will be rewarded.

I reckon McGrath and Francis will come in around round 6. There will be a lot of player rotation this season. Resting older guys. 4-5 changes per week until mid season.
Putting McGrath in straight up would be a good test for him. Throw him in the deep end at AFL level. This will also give us an insight as to whether he's ready for the ANZAC Day stage.

I don't think Myers will be on the fringe the guy looks in ripping shape.
I said potentially, it all depends on the development of the younger players and whether or not his body actually holds up for once.

Not sure whats more ridiculous...... 2 posts featuring a possible team 4 months out from the game? or neither of them including Tippa LOLWUT?

For what its worth, ill be most pumped with a line up like this

Francis Hartley Baguley
McGrath Hurley Goddard
Colyer Watson Zaharakis
Langford Daniher Fantasia
Laverde Hooker Tippa

Loonburger Heppell Merrett

Stanton Myers Parish Hocking

Re McGrath... he will eventually be a star. But year 1 may be a battle for him. He will show glimpses of stardom. I would be surprised if he plays round 1.

He will not be able to run as effectively as he does in junior football. Fantasia tried similar in his first year and usually got caught. As did Johannison. Opposition will continually force him onto his left, where he needs to improve his length and accuracy.

Opposition rough nut mongrel type players may give him a hard time in the VFL and AFL. Rubbing his nose in it at every opportunity simply for being #1. He will need guys like Hocking, Armbrose and Kelly around to help him out.

Woosha and Guy McKenna may give him a role like Fantasia, where he drifts up to the centre square and then sprints forward to provide a target in a catch me if you can scenario. Like McKenna had Gold Coast playing when he was coaching.

I would hope a preseason on top of the work he's already done fixes that. And I'd hope a guy picked in the first round (never mind the pointy end of it) was more ready for AFL than a rookie pick (Johannisen) or a scrawny kid at pick 55 (Fantasia).

He's not McCluggage, but he is supposed to be AFL ready compared to the two you mentioned.

He has been playing against school boys. I hope what you are saying is true. But it is a huge step up. Would you drop Francis or Parish to bring in McGrath?

Oh no, opposition players are going to give him a hard time, maybe even rough him up... is that even allowed?
He'll probably need his Mum to draw him a bath, brew a cup of her world famous chicken and noodle soup and dust off his favourite blanky.
But it's ok, I just spoke to her, she's happy to help, so he'll still play R1.

Mums are great, aren't they.

They play entirely different roles/positions, so they could certainly all play in the same side.

Baguley is 30 next year so comparing them based on "upside" is more than a bit pointless in all honesty, of course McGrath has the upside but Baguley has the runs on the board. As far as I'm concerned, until we're told otherwise Baguley is a staple of our backline. In all honesty if we want to play McGrath in a lockdown role intially (which against the Hawks is what I reckon we'll do) we can play all of Baguley, McGrath and Walla through their at varying stages given what their smalls are capable of.

Fixed. Dea was solid certainly but better than Hartley (and even Ambrose) who gave some of the leagues best key forwards a bath? You are kidding aren't you? Dea provides great depth certainly, but best 22? No, not with a fully fit squad.

There's a lot of variables with the best 22 right now, questions over where players will play (i.e. Hooker) and so on make it difficult to predict. Ideally if Stewart comes on, etc. he'd play back and then there's the midfield mix, etc. For mine right now the best 22 looks like the following (though this is subject to change).

B: Hurley - Hartley - Baguley
HB: Goddard - Hooker - McDonald-Tipungwuti
C: Colyer - Watson - Zaharakis
R: Leuenberger - Heppell - Z.Merrett
HF: Laverde - Daniher - Langford
F: Fantasia - Stewart - Francis
I/C: Stanton - Myers - Parish - McGrath

All good players but this thread is the side to face Hawthorn in round 1. Stewart would need to play some blinders in the pre-season to get a game.

Possibly but wouldn't you prefer a genuine KPF line up alongside Daniher, instead of the defender-come-forward we've continually experimented with?
