Well the practice matches are finished and that means Round One is only a fortnight away. Of the likely team only Schauble, Saddington, Crouch and Ablett are the notable unavailables so we should be able to field a strong team. Here's hopeing for a first up win.

Where the hell am I? What's that smell?

Only kidding. Apparently this is the place to find out why, and how the Hawks will be thrashed on Sunday. I don't know..... once you feel the awesome dominance of one D. Jacobs, you lot will be quaking in your boots....

By the way Charlie, I wasn't serious -

Well, memories of St Kilda in 2002 have always stopped me from declaring 'we are certainties'... but I'm pretty confident going into this match.

We're short of the bookends - Schauble at FB and O'Loughlin at FF, but other than that we're at full strength. In contrast, Hawthorn have gone with four rookies. Talented kids, no doubt, but only kids.

I'd be curious to know who you expect will play on Hall (Hay or Croad?), Davis, Bolton... and especially Goodes.

I'd say anything less than a 5 goal win would be a real disappointment for us.

I have tipped Sydney but I think this will be a real contest. Hawthorn always seem to be competitive in Sydney and have won 4 from their last 5 matches against the Swans(would have been all 5 if Crawf had have kicked that goal on the siren last year). I think the Hawks will be fired up to make a statement but will ultimately fall short due to the difference in class between the 2 teams. Sydney by 9.

Would not be shocked if Sydney won by 50 because they have the talent to do it, but I don't think that's the type of game we are going to see this time. For some stupid reason, and I know it isn't logical, I just feel the Swans are going to have a lot more scoring chances than the Hawks BUT are going to be inaccurate and wasteful to the point that the Hawks upset the Swans by less than a goal. Maybe last year's game at the SCG is still stuck in my head, but I think it's going to be the same type of game with the Hawks getting up at the end this year.
I think the Swans are a more talented club atm and I think they will ultimately finish top 6, but I guess I don't think the Swans are going to take the Hawks seriously enough Sunday to put them away. I think the fourth quarter will be the difference with the Hawks having more left in the tank than Sydney.

Lovely welcome that is.. :(

Ahh never underestimate youth.. or overestimate it either.

Hay/Hall (gawd forbid Jacobs). From the sounds of it you expect Goodes to play forward? Half forward? Personally I'd play Smith on him if that happened. Got a gut feel though he (Goodes) will be played on our dynamite mobile chf (you know.. Netherlands.. err.. HOLLAND)

I'd say anything less than a 5 goal win would be a real disappointment for us.

Looking at the respective named sides, our strength (if it can be called such) is our defence. Also think the midfield matches up reasonably well, but that forward line of ours... .

Guess we Hawks will have to over-estimate after all.

Good luck for the season (well.. most of it except say.. this round). ;)

Cheers.

Id put Croady on Goodes....And Jacobs to centre half bench.

Tipping a rising star nominee of Harry Miller this week ;) (with 5 possible rising stars playing theres a good chance we can get the first nomination)

I just hope we will give a good account of ourselves and if we are going down, don't throw in the towel. Even if we lose, if we play with heart and give our all, I'll be happy.
Personally I think we are actually in with a shot. I can't wait to see Buddy getting a run. I can't wait to see him develop into the premier forward of the competition. The kid is a freak. The one player out of the whole draft I wanted Hawthorn to nab, and they got him.. just!!

Anyway, enough of my rambling.. Best of luck to both teams, may the game be played in the best spirits and be hard but fair..

.. and the Hawks win!!

Heh - I did say we would be friendly... did I mention we'd also be honest? :D

I'd be rapt if I could kick with one foot, let alone two, so I figure they must be talented. Franklin has big raps and Harry Miller seems to have his share of admirers as well.

I have no idea where Goodes will play, but I don't think it will be forward . I think Holland might be a reasonable first-big-job for Roberts-Thomson.

Your midfield would be the equal of ours if Mitchell was playing, but Everitt, Vandenberg, Crawford and Hodge is a pretty handy starting four in the centre.

The Hawks worry me, don't know why but they do.

They won't be much chop this season but it wouldn't surprise me if they pull the upset first up before settling into their rut. The Hawks have done well against us of late and they have the pieces to pull off the upset.

Croad will play at CHB, Hay will play FB regardless of where your bi forwards lineup.
No-one will play on Bolton, he will be in the middle and probably do some time on both Crawford and Vanders. Davis will get C Brown although I hope we put Bateman on him and exploit him a bit.

If your forwards don't respect the run off our HB line then they will punish you. The issue there is where they will kick it!

With Mitchell I honestly believe we would have taken this game off Sydney and change alot of peoples opion of the swans, however without his uncanny knack of getting the ball to fall on his chest and that niggly bugger - Kirk - hanging off Crawford all day I can't see Hodge and Vandenberg getting the ball deep inside 50 to dangerous spots.

We should go down in the area of 20 points but if we're within 4 goals at the last change then you'd better get two guys playing on Miller cause the 4th quarter is Miller-time (catch phrase used to sell the American beer Millers - which will stick by seasons end).

Don't expect our boys to show fear and they'll play more the Sydney type of game than Sydney. (Hard in close, disciplined, prepared to take the bump etc)

If there are Swans fans reading all the Hawk replies wondering.... it's cause we were invited.

Sydney should win, but we are $4.50 to win the game, we are also $4.50 to make the finals, using my logic if we beat Sydney we make the finals :D

My tip Sydney by 35 points, but Hawthorn lead by 2 goals at half time.

Im looking for a 90's style Sydney avalange in the last quater from the Swans.

My tip for the season-

Realistically I see Hawthorn finishing 12th-13th range, we have got a bit of talent in the midfield and down back, while I tipping yet another 4-6 placing for the Swans.

I'm extremely dissapointed that Mitchell isn't playing today. It was my one chance to see him run around in a H&A game this season in the flesh, I have a lot of time for Mitchell and think he is an gun. Always handy to have a ball magnet that can actually DO something with the ball!

I think the Swans will probably take this one away relatively easily. The Hawks do make me nervous because they have had it over us of late, and I always get nervous regardless of who we play Rd 1. Very interested to see if the players actually line-up as named with Goodes at CHF and Hall at FF with the absence of Mickey. I was expecting Hall to stay at CHF and Davis to drop back from HFF to FP to cover the lack of a leading target with Doyle/Jolly rotating through the true FF. Of course Roos has stated in the past that about all you can read into his named teams is the 22 names, the positions are done by "one of the IT guys, he likes to have some fun with it" ;)

As i said in the other thread, very happy with todays game but hope we can keep it up in the next few weeks against some better teams.

On behalf of all Hawthorn fans, i would like to apologise for the woeful performance of our team today.....And damn O'Keefe is a gun...

Yea, ditto (late though it is) Nightwolf.

Think I sold you guys short a little, played some excellent footy and who says 'one on one' play is dead.

Killed us at the contest and then had speed enough to break lines and go direct.

Said about Davis that he's talented but erratic, well, he showed the talent last Sunday, hope for your sakes he get's the erratic part out of his game. Could be a very VERY good footballer if he wants it enough.

Good luck for the rest of your season (excepting the return game)..hope we *in the words of CharlieG* "thrash" ya's in that! ;)
