Re: Round 19 trades

I'm a fan of your SC style Judd Magic :thumbsu:

I think to win most years you have to throw caution to the wind and trade aggressively. There will be the odd year where a trade saver will win out due to absolute late season carnage...maybe even this year!

Still, the best chance for overall honours is with the aggressive player, not with the passive player who steams home late for a creditable top 2000.

I'm not sure how people pot JM and not appear a hypocrit when the number 1 overall player 'prompts' has played the same game with a bit more points luck. They run the same aggressive style each season...wonder how their last 3 years compare...no attack on anyone but just cant understand the SC criticism.

Simply based on probability...350,000+ teams...you can expect a couple of 1000 to either 1)pick the right mix early - sheer luck, and 2)get through the first half of the season unscathed by injuries. If you are not in this sheer luck category, and interested in overall, then you have to risk trading to catch up. The other choice is to hold fire and run home strong at the finish for a decent but safe top 2000 result.

For the safe traders, the people you pass on the finishing line are the players who risked it all and gambled...i def prefer taking the risk for glory in the first place rather than finishing late for respectability!

Disclaimer: This does not include trade savers who have made it their priority to be strong late in the season to win a cash league or simply league prestige. However, these people should respect JM for going for overall if it is a diff goal to theirs.

Post of the year nomination! :D:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: Round 19 trades

I, also have had top 300 finishes last couple of years and decided to throw caution to the wind based on JM and Impromptus posts to improve this year...there is hit and miss in the madness such as Impromptus Sandilands trade...we all thought wtf! but studied aggressive trading is edge of your seat stuff...lol...and makes good reading here.

Right now I am just outside the top 1000 and can only reflect on the kiss of death trades I made this year..ie that is players losing form immediately after I traded them in..Chapman, O'keefe, Boyd et el.

I am not sure saving trades is any better than the real fun...thanks for the good reads JM

No problem kind sir. :D:thumbsu:

Re: Round 19 trades

The other thing is this year the abundance of cows and the MN made it possible for you to load up nice and early with premiums. Although I don't agree/disagree with burning all your trades early I do believe in getting in the best squad you can as early as possible. It's pretty hard not to have to use a few early to get the right rookies in and then be hit with at least one or two LTI as well as the odd sideways trade to make an initial correction.

My team was pretty much ****ed from day one so i burnt trades early but if i do run out of puff and take a beating in the rankings I won't be surprised (and have anyone to blame but myself).

I do think Prompts is in a little different situation too, he's been in the top 10 for most of the year so trading and trading hard was always going to be his go. Not so sure it should've been for us sitting ranked 1000+.

Re: Round 19 trades

10,000th you moron?

I am a very respectable 1258th thank you very much

Heyyyyy don't be hating on us 10,000th-ish players :p. I'm quite stoked with my 9,800-something ranking, it's the highest I've ever been in SC :D

Re: Round 19 trades

Agree that trading aggressively is the way to go, but the difference I see is Impromptu has traded with logic and forward thinking rather than like a sheep. Personally, I'll be bringing in my 24th premium this week, and while I'll probably finish strong, the extra points from doing Bewick > Curnow in week 3 (when I was on holiday - never ever again) would have put me well into the top 100.

And JM, I have 11/22 starters the same as you and 6 bench places. I don't know what PK's team looks like, but I'd back him in 10/10 times to rank higher than you. I'm confused though, I thought your claim to fame was league wins against PK - and now we're claiming your crappy ranking is because you are going for an overall win?

I'm higher than PK in the overall rankings and higher than him in Bigfooty Div 1 ladder (I'm 2nd and PK is 8th)

My claim to fame is overall and league wins you moron. Two consecutive top 400 overall finishes and Bigfooty Div 7 premier 2 years ago. Plus my 4 wins against PK. :D:thumbsu:

See, I dont think it is that easy to say trade like sheep. How many premiums have gone down this year? I personally have been impacted by 5. If you start with 14 premiums and have to upgrade rookies to gain 8 more premiums via double trades, that is 16 right there. If you have to sideways 5 premiums, that is another 5. Leaves you with 3 trades without having wasted any.

I have been hit by 5 premium injries (+3 non premiums), others more which would explain a lot of people having 1/2/3 trades left. I'd say most people that end up in the top 5k may have wasted maybe just 2 trades that you could potentially argue.

Personally, I did waste two but I was 73rd overall mid season and decided to have a shot at the title. I got an inside word that higgins wouldnt recover from one of the most respected posters on this and another site. I had held Higgin's for 4 weeks and ever so slightly, was going to keep him...i was on a knife edge decision-wise but got tipped over. I dumped Higgins and brought in the Adcock (prem at the time). My season died right there....cost me trades and points.

This is not a sulk, i take the information and use it as i deem fit...my choice and I was tempted by a shot at the title...but I think to some degree, my path represents many...maybe you could accuse them of 1-2 wasted trades but they'd fire back that they went for the title!

To me, diff between 1-5 trades might simply be an injury or two more.

Re: Round 19 trades

There's a couple of blokes on here getting way too deep, let's not lose the sight of the fact that it's a forum about fantasy football! And BlueGibbs your 'inside word' on Higgins is pure rubbish.

Re: Round 19 trades

I will wait until Friday afternoon.. and team/injury news.. but thinking

Prestia>Ablett
H Shaw>Fisher - hopefully injury isn't too bad? if so probably get Suckling

Team will be:

Lids, Newman, Fisher, Gibbs, Goddard, Broughton, Heppell
Lower, Puopolo, Toy
Pendles, Ablett, Judd, Boyd, Swan, Harvey
Swallow, Jacobs, Mzungu
Cox, Smith
Lobbe, Tippet
Pav, Fyfe, Goodes, Sylvia, Franklin, Petrie, N Riewoldt
Howe, Lynch, Richardson

will leave me with 6 trades after this week

I want to bring in ROK for Lynch so I have another mpp to cover Fwd/Mid (plus North & Blues Byes) and depending on Newman will need to trade him out.. should leave me with 5-4 trades for finals.. happy with that!

Thanks for the feedback!

I am definitely thinking along those lines or swapping Petrie into the ruck with Lobbe or Tippet to the Fwd bench and if i had ROK put him in as the forward 7 spot

:heart:I love MPP:heart:

That is a bit harsh there. If you read my posts in the other thread i have pretty much laid bare all season...opening myself up to ridicule come season's end. The Higgins bit is not a lie at all.

Re: Round 19 trades

Have traded aggressively to get into the top 1500, but it has left me with minimal trades.

This week have Adcock, Deledio, O'Keefe, Goodes & N.Riewoldt dropping out, as well as big Sandy still warming the pine.

Probably won't trade though, as I have cover with Puopolo, Jacobs, Mzungu, Hale & Howe.

As for Sandi, got plenty of cover. My ruck division is Cox, Sandi, Petrie, Hale & Lobbe. :)

Re: Round 19 trades

really glad l am not playing any league game this weekend my team is shower this week. l had a alright backline and good cover not any more. newman, batch and hibberd all injured gundy has a bye 5 players out of the Defence.next week will go newman to fisher and go from there grr sc is out to get me.

Re: Round 19 trades

I think I'm just going to go for broke.

I'm too far back at 50th, but who cares, my cash league is only a pretty small one anyway.

Newman -> Fisher
Iles -> Fyfe (against all my better judgement. His run home sucks, expensive, his shoulder might go at any second, 2nd year player. But he's just a gun, and MPP helps).

Next week Smith -> Mumford

Leaving this fairly imposing squad (if I may say so) with trades to spare:

Goddard, Fisher, Deledio, Enright, Gibbs, Broughton, Suckling (Lower, Talia, Strauss)
Swan, Pendlebury, Boyd, Priddis, Dal Santo, Judd (Fyfe*, Hibberd, Callinan)
Cox, Mumford (Bailey, Tippett)
Franklin, Pavlich, O'Keefe, Chapman, Sylvia, Harvey, Petrie (N. Riewoldt, Mzungu, Richo)

Backline is the weak point, but lower can be pretty handy cover. Normally Riewoldt will play to cover byes.

*Only nominally on the bench, because he will always be on the field to cover midfield or forward emergencies. When all players are in play like in round 24 for the GF, he will be on, and I'll have a decision to make about Sylvia and one other forward assuming no injuries.

edit: When I bring in Sausages Mumford I might make Lower into Birchall or Davis or someone else reasonably priced. I know bringing Fyfe in makes my forward line almost unnecessarily strong, but **** it, I want him!
