It's not as though we have a lot of other viable alternatives. I think Australians by and large suffer from an inferiority complex where cultural cringe permeates our thinking and we believe that only America can provide this sort of entertainment. It's as though we are worried that Americans might think Rove represents us and is the best we have to offer or something.

The show was not really funny but then it is a talk show and is supposed to entertain by letting us see behind the lives of celebrities. In a funny way, I think Rove has a far better sense of humour than his guests and where we look at one of his gags and cringe because the guest doesn't get it, we should be looking at the guests and wonder why they are so humourless.

caught the last 5 mins where he was pretending to write a postcard to his mum. turtle looked bored, then politely clapped after the gag had finished.

Yes, there were some lame segments for sure. Having said that, Turtle was a completely boring guest. Not a lot of personality or media training there.

Kathy Griffin at least participated wholeheartedly and kept some sort of vibe going, and Lisa Kudrow flitted between hysterical laughter and participation and being confused.

A good guest doesn't make the host do all the work and vice versa.

Rove is a tool but I agree with your last paragraph. Why do you reckon mick Parkinson had billy Connelly and michael Caine as guests.? They entertain themselves.I reckon there is a disconnect between Aussie/english and American humor. WAtch the American guests on Graham norton they have no idea what is going on - other than robin williams who just does his usual riffing

Yes, thinking on their feet is limited to a few Americans. Most seem to not be able to do it. They also seem to take things quite literally so while searching for the gag, they go off on a different tangent. Maybe a by-product of the obvious sitcom culture.

I'm very big on dry sarcasm and self deprecating humour. It didn't go over in the US at all when I went there. It's like I had to preface it with 'I'm about to tell a joke' first.

Yet when he is not accusing us of being racist, Harry has a pretty good sense of humour. I suspect most US comedians and the public in general have a decent sense of humour but they have to be driving the direction of that humour and can't adapt well to the humour occurring around them.

Improv performers like the Whose Line guys are a little better at it but they seem few and far between.

americans are just too stupid to understand sarcasm and also they care about peoples perception of them too much to allow some one to have a crack at them as a joke

Colbert and Stewart and larry david are American. The interviews that colbert and Stewart do cannot be scripted. Larry david ad libs everything. Each one of those would be fantastic talk show guests

That's why these guys stand out so much. I'm a massive fan of Jon Stewart. I have such a great interest in the US political system and political media because of what the Daily Show does. Sheer brilliance. Would love to be in his audience.

The monologues that Jon is doing lately on the Tax on millionaires are historical documents. They will go down in history

Ah the Subway guy who needed $200k to feed his family and Stewart points out that you can buy a footlong for $5. :D

Edit: And Bill O'Reilly threatening to shut down his show if his tax went up. NO .... DON'T .... PLEASE ..... BILL .... NO. :)

I think the guests last night were far better in terms of participation, and they were a fairly diverse bunch. Jackman is a TV hosts' dream as he picks up and runs with everything they throw out there and even generates his own bit. It was taken in a good spirit last night and not a lot of confusion.

I am finding that Rove is talking about himself a bit too much. Sort of asking them a question, given them 20 seconds and then interrupting with his own experiences with the topic and taking more time than he gives them.

The show has value in that it shows us a whole range of celebrities from shows on Foxtel over here, instead of being a FTA channel where you have to draw on fleeting guests and a regular stable of Channel 10 identities.

rove must suffer from the same disorder as dermie, talking about oneself.

I heard that Paul F Tompkins has done an ep. Has this been on yet? I'm just shaking my head at you guys writing off American comedians/actors. You need to dig into the American improv/alternative comedy scene. Some amazing stuff going on right now.

Not writing them all off, and definitely mentioned that some of the improv people are good. It's just that so many do not contribute to interviews, or do not get the interviewer. Some are great when they are driving the direction of the conversation. Perhaps it is a matter of what mainstream US television is allowing us to see.

Paul F Tompkins was on Monday just gone. The guests were more responsive in general. Tompkins was fine, maybe could have shown a fraction more initiative but maybe it was just Rove in general that people have trouble following sometimes. Hugh Jackman was by far the most entertaining person because he embraces whatever is happening and runs with it. Then he knows who the hell Rove is and knows this is going to his home market.

I heard someone on the radio talking about RoveLA and its low ratings in the US. I swear Rove said this was an Australian audience only and was not being shown in the US. Could it be a backwater cable pickup showing Australian shows in the US? That would explain the low ratings in an unintended market.

Rove's about two rungs below Ben Elton.

Time he found a real job like he rest of us. :thumbsd:

I'm actually starting to like this show.

This weeks episode was the best yet with Justin Timberlake, James Marsden and Eliza Dushku, you almost can't **** that up.

Yet the Wheel of Fortune segment actually made the show, even the guests seem to like it, although they are actors, so.....

It's better then most US talk shows anyway, which have you turning off after 10 minutes.

The format of the show is a winner. 3 guests lounging around on the couch. Putting the odd personal/funny question to them. Almost all the guests have participated and seem to like this laidback format. Rove says some cringeworthy stuff to us but the guests generally seem to appreciate the Aussie attitude.

Plenty more material to work with being in LA as well, both personality wise and culture wise.

It's actually a decent show and I watch it every week unlike Rove Live.
