Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

Confused why Geelong fans think a single F1 is unreasonable?

He’s a top 5-7 ruck contracted for 2 more years

Saints would gladly keep him, Geelong have no real leverage… what am I missing?
If by F1 you mean Future 1st, Geelong seem to have adopted a position of being reluctant to trade F1s.

The idea is that this year's pick is at least a known quantity - it's Pick 17. So we know exactly what we'd be paying.

The risk with trading a F1 is that next season you could suffer a spate of injuries or poor form, or some other type of bad luck, and crash down the ladder. So what you thought might be Pick 15-20 ends up being Pick 8 or something.

We seem to be happier to add an extra to this year's first just for the certainty of it, than take the risk with a F1.

Can’t see the Saints keeping Marshall on a big contract to be an unhappy 20 goal FF because they want an F1 instead of this year’s first. They’ll take this year’s first and maybe a sweetener if they hold out. It’s not quite a salary dump but he’s obviously surplus since they signed TDK and doesn’t want to be there. It’ll get done.
Just like Wilkie did, eh?

Maybe pull up a few of your predictions from the CW thread to give readers an idea of the worth of your proclamations

Is there any actual proof/independent reporting of this, other than Saints fans' say-so?
There are only reports that St Kilda have been front loading some of the bigger contracts.

I haven't seen any reports on which contracts specifically have been front ended though. I think fans are just guessing there but it's probably fair to guess that at least some of his contract has been.

Lol

Your assuming because you’ve added a flashy TDK (who can’t play forward & halves the ruck) but you’ve lost Marshall( who can play both), added SOS who averages 12 games year, Ryan who averages less & some other spud, that the sainters will miraculously bound up the ladder?

On the occasion TDK does tap the ball, what midfield will their be in the other end?

You’re in the doom & gloom with the rest of us ol’ sport.

Its’s just cost you $4.5m/ year for the luxury :).

Add the extra $1.5m your paying NWM.

Yeeouch!

A midfield of TDK NWM Windhager Flanders McCrae Pou looks ominous

Mitch Cleary mentioned on his podcast about a month ago that Marshall contract was one of the front ended deals so suggested Saints would expect more in a trade since we've already paid a decent portion of his salary for next year.

Front loaded contract, which makes holding him more attractive to us and also more attractive to Geelong.

Marshall made noises about a move last year so I don’t think holding onto him will bother the saints at all. He’s also previously worked very well in tandem with Ryder. Maybe not Marshall’s preferred role but it’s clearly st kilda’s.

Given Lyon’s statements on contracted players including one where he referenced Scott and Geelong any though Marshall will be cheap is fanciful.

This years draft and Geelong’s list will also make this harder. Their first round pick is late and will blow out further in a weak draft. They don’t have a lot st Kilda needs that they’d be prepared to trade.

All this points to an interesting trade week, if Mackie does his usual then this could easily fall over.

Ironically, all those spuds you mentioned you fought to keep and/or showed interest in bringing to your club.

It's being inferred rather than proven. Mitch Cleary ran with it a few weeks ago, but again he was only making an assumption based on the fact that the Saints clearly have money to spend now.

It'll get done and will probably also involve the usual back-and-forth shenanigans involving later round picks, which is perhaps why it will take a little longer than expected.

Contrary to conspiracy/mythology, when the Cats want a deal they tend not to be assholes about it, so I doubt this will cause much angst at either end.

Everyone knows the difference between this year's first and a future first. That's the point. Your first this year is essentially a second in a poor draft, due to where you finished, plus the academy and compensation picks. That doesn't feel a fair trade for Marshall. Your F1 meanwhile is more likely than not to be worth more. That's why people are saying the F1 is a fairer trade.

My prediction at the outset was the Saints would have to up his contract before trade week to avoid him requesting a trade, which is exactly what happened. Plenty of Saints nuffs argued incessantly about it, but I was correct. My post is right there quoted on the last page of that thread. So kindly jog on.

How did we fight to keep TDK? - we could still match the offer but - at $1.8m / year the club said they wouldn’t.

It’s a stupid price to pay for Tom.

He’s fun to watch, but goes missing a lot - without Marshall - something you’ll realise in ‘26.

Also happy to handover the Silvagni weirdness - Stephen is doing to you what he did to us. Jack is a solid player who struggles to get on the park.

I don't. I'm happy to give up this year's R1 pick for RoMa. I'd package it up with a R3 for Steele.
Consider this, you’ve just been smashed by a team who will improve next season with Allen and Draper plus the usual academy picks.

You have Dangerfield 35, Blicavs 34, Cameron 32, Stewart 32, Stanley 34 who are nearing the end of great careers. Are you going to load up or just shrug and fade away ?.

Worple is a good get but a lot more needs to be done, Marshall is exactly what Geelong needs. This years, next years who cares if you’re a chance to pinch another flag before these guys retire you just pay up and move on imo.

It will be more. Mackie and Wells will give them a late pick swap in their favour so they can claim a moral victory. Same as the Smith deal.
Don’t need a late pick swap. Our late pick will be likely spent on NGA Fincher.

This years first won’t be enough as well if Marshall’s contract has been front loaded, which is what can be inferred from Caroline Wilson reporting we were on track to only spend 83% of the cap.

Okay we can now cross the "You need to pay up big because he's the final missing piece of your premiership puzzle" off the Bigfooty Trade Board bingo card..

They reckon they’re getting butters (Port will match) next year lol

To begin with TDK isn’t being paid $1.8m a year. But notwithstanding the $$, he was a wanted player at the Blues.

In terms of Silvagni, again, the $$ probably don’t make sense, but I’m sure as a player, he is probably your 2nd best key defender in 2025.

Next minute, Curnow leaves and you’ll be changing (if you haven’t already) your view on whether he is any good.
