Recommitted Rowan Marshall [OOC 2027] - Requested Trade to Geelong, didn't get done

That’s fair enough from a Geelong perspective.

However you can’t expect us to give Marshall away and we have our own needs. I’m actually hoping we keep Marshall, what you saw this year is him playing injured off little preparation. He had a fractured pelvis so expect a better version in 2026 wherever he plays.

You guys are in a bind, do you load up like collingwood and double down or do you try and hedge your bets. I’d double down simply because the older guys are so good that replacing them is impossible.

Interesting times when you throw in Tassie.
Of course not. It's all part of the dance that is trade week (or fortnight/month).

Marshall being contracted complicates things and gives your club the initial upper hand.

The fact that he wants out and has nominated Geelong means he won't entertain, say, the Bonbers.

So, it's either Geelong, or RoMa turns up to Morrabbin on the first day of pre-season.

I can't imagine he won't get to Geelong. I personally feel that this year's R1 is a fair starting point.

If SOS wants to fight for steak knives, there may be a swap of picks to sweeten the deal, that may well happen.

Im pretty sure hes not interested in spending his last few years in the bottom 6. But they can try if they like.
Exactly why I mentioned his preference is the Cats. But if the Dons wanna pay something substantial then these things can be steered in certain directions can’t they. (I am aware Dons only have 2x 2nd rounders this year)

Geelong got picks 14, 24 and 37 plus a future first for Tim Kelly when they traded him to West Coast in 2019.

Our starting point needs to be high and hard, and if they don’t like it, too bad! ! I’d be demanding nothing less.

West Coast thought they were in the premiership window in 2019, and they’d identified Kelly as key to that success, so they were happy to dig deep to appease Geelong.

Based on that trade, I’d ask for SDK (or Humpty or Dempsey), their first round this year (pick 18) and a future first.

They’re wanting a proven ruck at the peak of his game, a bloke with several years left in him, a guy who has regularly featured in the top 5 or 6 of our B&F’s, with 2 years to run on his contract, (much of which has been prepaid), who they’ve identified as the missing link to their flag aspirations, ffs, if they want him, it’ll be costly.

I’m sure that’s what we’re thinking, hence Ross’s pre-warning a few weeks ago on TV - basically pony up or shut up!

We need to know what we’re doing and what we’re working with ASAP, so I’d put our demands to them formally on Monday, give them a very short window to respond, and if they can’t meet our demands then move on.

It’s us who are in the power position here, not Geelong FFS. Can you imagine what they’d be asking for if the situation was reversed?

The message needs to be loud and clear, we want him to stay, if you want him, dig deep boys, dig deep!!

He's contracted & wanted
How is that straight-forward
Cos the pick is all he's worth, it's all Geelong have, you've signalled your intent to hardly play him and he wants to go. It's about right.

I'm all up for a bit of full-on haggling but trust me this one ain't it. We all know he's going, we all know why, and we all know for how much.

And I'm pretty sure that deep down you'll be disappointed if Geelong end up saying, "If you want to keep him that desperately that you want more than we can give, fine. Keep him."

And when he retires in 2028 you'll be wondering what may have been with another first round pick.

But yeah, let's go through the motions if we wish. Just wasting time.

Saints Bros, its really not going to be that difficult. I take back saying most of you know what's happening here, I was wrong.

Its a zero angst trade and is probably 99% agreed to already. A Geelong first and some minor quibbling over steak knives.

We've signalled that we will hardly play him ?
I think you're confused with Steele

Even if the dons had better picks than us, what makes you think they'd prioritise a 30 year old ruck with them over drafting?

I don't think you'd get more from Essendon than you would from us

I’m sorry but that is utter garbage, the vast majority of Saints supporters want him to stay.

For good reason too - he’s one of our very best players!!

If you want some clarity go and find the tape of Lyon talking about the trading of contracted players the day after Nas signed.

He uses the Kelly trade to spell it out exactly, and uses Geelong as the example of how to play it.

We know why you want Ro, we’re not stupid, if you don’t really want him, if you think you have other options, fine - flesh them out, exhaust them.

If you want this guy you’re gonna have to pay and pay handsomely.

The entitlement of you lot is unreal.

In what world is Tim Kelly a better player than Marshall?

You’re having a laff!!

You watch what happens here, I dint think you’re gonna like it!

F1 & its done
A realistic request and I imagine that's what the haggling will be around. This year or next year. Geelong won't want to give up F1 ... but they may have to.

This is such a simple negotiation so long as the mindset expressed by others doesn't mirror what the Saints are actually thinking (e.g. making wild claims about Tim Kelly and Marshall being at his peak and so proven that I guess they're recruiting TDK just to .. I dunno ... admire from the stands?).

You have really set yourself up for a fall.

Their 1st rounder this year looks correct weight.

It's possible yes but I would suggest its pretty unlikely.

May wanna chat with @Saintscomemarchingin. PS Kelly had come third in the Brownlow that year. I'm not even sure that Marshall has attended his third overall.

And there are so many more interesting trade debates for you to practise making ambit claims on. Why waste everyone's time on this one?

That is possibly one of the worst posts I have ever read on bigfooty. It is not far off Aristotle Pickett the3rd level which is not a great thing.
