Opinion Rowe to CHB

Don't mind him being trialled there, but wouldn't mind betting Mick will start Watson there in round 1. Put together a good group of games late last year before he got injured. Deserves another chance to make CHB his own.

I have to agree, I watched a but if the freo game again the other day as it came up on fox footy. And was surprised at how well Watson was going. I think it's important that we develop him to be able to pinch hit as a forward as due to him being a bit immobile there could be times when there is no match up for him in defence, so would be handy to swing him and hendo around.

On reading the many pre-season reviews re our best 22 I see that the majority are hoping and praying that WATSON can hold down the CHB position so as to release HENDO to CHF. I too hope he is capable of this, however am sceptical that a 16 gamer can step up and play this key position for the entire season.

I am throwing up Sam ROWE as a possible solution. I know he has some limitations, however he has a lot more experience than WATSON and has played CHB in South Australia and for the Bullants. He is probably more mobile than WATSON and I believe reads the play better. He also takes a very good overhead mark and does not mind the physical contact.

At 196 cm and 96 kg I reckon he is someone MM could look at to fill the void. This may allow WATSON to gain experience as the third tall defender.

Thoughts....

Mentioned in another thread - so many "potentials" (including "potential" KPPs) waiting in the wings in 2014. If Watson doesn't secure his spot early on and/or if any one of Waite, Henderson or Jammo succumb to injury at some stage during the year then Rowe may get an opportunity somewhere along the spine; probability says that he will likely be presented with an opportunity at some stage/s during the year - he will have to grab it and and hold tight. CHB may just well be the position where he holds his best chance of securing a position in the team and securing his contract beyond 2014. Would be fantastic if he could make it!

Worth a try with Rowe. I would also love to see Kruezer play there for a game or two with Warnock in the Ruck. He is fairly mobile, good in the air and on the ground, and has the heart, spirit, and hustle all good defenders have. Just thinking outside the box.

The only position along our spine that seems 100% settled is FB with Jammo - pity, the bloke obviously likes to kick a goal and is a good lead! Warnock and Kreuz don't score 10/10 on the resilience stakes so are likely to share ruck duties with Warnock likely rucking 60+% of the time; Kreuz therefore has to try and secure a spot somewhere and maybe he and Waite could potentially swing between FF and CHB as another option (Hendo as CHF and Jammo as FB). So many possible options - will be very interesting to see which ones take shape and crystallise!

Great OP Love the Drake...

I have big hopes for Rowe this year. The after-effects of his illness will be a distant memory and he is a natural footballer who could well come on in leaps and bounds...could become the archetypal 'good ordinary player'.

If he can hold down CHB and allow Hendo to terrorise opposition defenders, all the better.

Could do with a few of those - especially those around 196cm and 96kg!

Waite, hendo, Jamo are all very good players in the spine, if Watson comes on we are looking very good.

However the chances of them all play 22 is very very low.

It's good to hear that Rowe has done well at vfl level as a chb. As I dare say him, white and cas will all be called on to fill in at times this year.

Agreed, season seems to get more intense every year and with the inevitable injury (resting), suspension and loss of form the opportunities will be there. There should be enough opportunities for 6-7 KPPs to try and stake a claim over the course of the year including NAB challenge. I just hope we can get a 90% settled and preferred line-up fairly early on in the New Year - stability in the side with a degree of flexibility as far as positional play is concerned is a must; teams that are constantly chopping and changing always seem to inhabit the bottom half of the ladder!

Genuine KPPs and those with potential to be genuine KPPs: Jammo, Hendo, Waite, Casboult, Watson, Rowe and Kreuzer (part-time)

Non-genuine KPPs (pinch-hitters but best used in other roles) or need more time to develop: McInnes, White, Everitt, Bootsma (with an extra 7-10kg you could put him in the group above) and Giles

Let's hope that between Waite, Casboult, Hendo, Watto, Everitt and Rowe we have FF, CHF and CHB covered. Of course we could throw Cripps in the mix, he must be 200 cms by now :D

Hi there.
IMO KP's will be

FB - Jamison
CHB - Waite
CHF - Kreuzer
FF - Henderson
R - Warnock

Backups - Watson, Rowe, Casboult.

If desperate - Walker or Everitt to play tall.

Given the instability of relying on Waite and the desperate need to develop our younger KPPs, IMO Watson should be given a shot at CHB before Waite. Worth keeping in mind Jamo is getting on in age too, we must try as hard as possible to get Watto to reach his potential. Showed some very promising signs in the seniors before injury last season after his underwhelming games in the VFL. Waite needs to be treated as a bonus. Not just because he struggles to stay on the field (for a combo of reasons) but also because he is nearing the end and we need to be able to not turn to crap when he isn't around ;)

Henderson for me is still our best CHB with his ability to read the ball and now the confidence to believe in himself.Watson is to slow to hold down CHB and with his booming kick i see him more as a Brian Lake type.Have got to hope Waite can hold down that crucial KPF role with Rowe,Kreuzer and Casboult for FF.
Drafting has been impressive depth looks good.

Whilst I agree with this, I'm a firm believer that he provides far more value to our team as CHF, in addition to him seeming a little more natural up forward. He's been caught with the ball a few times in the back half.

We really need Watson to cement a Key Defender spot this year.

The latest training reports have ROWE training with the backs. Earlier in January a training report said he has never looked fitter/stronger. I really think he is our answer to our CHB issue, particularly with Lachie having his latest mishap and Waite's history. Below is my back line for round 1 (assuming Henderson is our starting CHF):

FB Tuohy Jamo McInnes
CHB Simpson Rowe Everitt

Tuohy, Everitt and Simpson to provide the run with Jamo, Rowe and McInnes playing accountable one on one footy. McInnes and Everitt to play small/tall. Walker, Scotland, Docherty, Watson, White, Bootsma are all other options to run through the back line but I feel this is our strongest six, with Walker and Scotland released further up the ground to use their sublime skills.

If Rowe was looking good down back, I would like the lineup of:
FB Tuohy Rowe Jamo
CHB Simpson Watson Everitt/Walker

Similar points to OP, except that Jamo would be suited to the third tall role. Has good footy smarts getting out of defense, and being the third tall would save his shoulders and make sure he was around for longer. Good balance of youth and experience.

Yup. Me too

I reckon Jamo is the fullback all day long.
Everitt just doesn't have the size or presence to be a legitimate KPP at either end of the ground.
Got to cobble something together out of Watto and Rowe. Doesn't matter which one makes it, but boy do we need one of 'em to.

Jamo is fullback until he busts his shoulders.

Would be great to see Jamo released from FB to a BP on the third tall but I just don't see us carrying two lumbering KPP's (Rowe & Watson) in the back line. Again, I think it is healthy for the list to have Rowe & Watson fighting for the CHB position, with Rowe winning out due to his flexibility/experience.

This leaves Everitt/White/Bootsma/McInnes fighting for the third tall back position (Everitt does provide that flexibility where he can play wing/hff if required with the ability to swing back). McInnes is a bit one dimensional, as he is a pure backman where as Bootsma and White can play back or forward. I still see MM playing McInnes and Everitt in the back line as they both have the ability to play tall/small and are different styles of player who will complement each other.

We need Rowe or Watto to put their hand up and OWN the CHB position...
