Sydney again top the supporter base ladder in 2018 with 1.2 million followers Australia wide.

Collingwood have reclaimed its place over Essendon as the most supportered Victorian club in Australia with 660,000 to Essendon 651,000.

Richmond the club who claims to have 100,000 members is the 5th biggest Victorian club with 487,000 supporters around Australia behind the pies 660,000, bombers 651,000, hawks 545,000 and blues 490,000

Melbourne are the smallest Victorian club with 198,000 fans around Australia

Not suprising Swans are the biggest supported club. NSW is the most populous state and until GWS came in the Swans were their only team. A lot of these "supporters" have probably never been to a game or wouldn't be able to name a single Swans player, except maybe Buddy.

For a meaningful statistic, they should be asking people about their preferred football team IN ANY CODE. That would exclude people who don't really follow AFL, but take a mild interest in the team from their home town.

Their transition of "supporters" to members is a disgrace in comparison to GWS.

Bombers (QLD, NSW, WA, NT), Pies (QLD, NSW, SA, WA), Blues (SA, WA) and Hawks (QLD, SA, WA, Tas) have big interstate following.

Whereas Richmond (Tas) don't have as much interstate following, hence the lower national supporter base.

Swans is highly dubious. How many of that 1.1m are actually "fans".
Members are more important as they sends money to the club.

So I'd say this study misleads regarding the Swans. 60k members is nothing to sneeze at and they should be prouder of their achievements than these figures suggest.

Dogs have a 40% increase post 2016 to 350K fans - in other words, 250K die hards and 100K bandwagoners.

Like to know what the margin of error and sample size is on these "total supporter" numbers.

Yeah exactly. Sydney are only first as it's a large city with 1 club (before GWS). Qlder's obviously don't give a * about AFL, but NSW people do somewhat.

My dad’s family mostly follow Sydney. Due to following South Melbourne they they grew up in South Melbourne. Know a lot swans fans in Melbourne due to the south connection obviously
