VAFA
THE Fitzroy Football Club is noted for its history, particularly since its new incarnation in the VAFA.
As the AFL recognised women's input to the game this week, the Lions' contribution is also worthy of recognition.
Their 1985 annual report shows Elaine Findlay becoming the first VFL female board member.

1996 - RIP Fitzroy

As we acknowledge the newcomers to the competition of the past 30 years, it would be remiss to overlook the history between the Collingwood and Fitzroy Football Clubs. The Roys played their final game against the Magpies in round 16, 1996, when the Pies won by 40 points at Victoria Park. They merged with the Brisbane Bears at season's end. In 209 meetings between 1897 and 1996, Collingwood won 131 matches and Fitzroy 75. There were three draws.

As Tony Shaw (pictured above with Paul Roos) said after the final match between the two teams: "I don't know whether we underestimated them or what, but I didn't think there was the passion and effort that needed to be put in at any level of league today. Fitzroy have got to be congratulated".

Beyond 1982 – interstate, from the Collingwood website.

Classy from Collingwood. They're slowly becoming harder to hate.

Loved the latest open mike with Conlan. Long live the Roys!

The Front Bar on channel 7 has been giving a few old Roy boys a go lately. Michael Reeves a few weeks back, Paul Roos tonight talking about his time at Fitzroy, among his other experiences.

Vale Garry Sidebottom
The Club is deeply saddened by the recent passing of former Fitzroy Lion Garry Sidebottom. Sidebottom was a star with WAFL side Swan Districts and is recognised as a member of the West Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Sidebottom's VFL career began with St Kilda (54 games) then Geelong (7 games), before being recruited to the Fitzroy Lions where he played 43 Senior matches across three seasons from 1982 to 1984. Sidebottom is the uncle of Brisbane Lions premiership player Beau McDonald and brother of fellow Fitzroy Lion, Allan. He was very popular member of the Fitzroy team and will be missed by the Club. Our deepest condolences goes to Garry's family and friends at this difficult time.

Sad day.

Condolences to the Sidebottom family.

My memories of Garry are vague, but my family raved about him. No doubt you'd have better memories 3KZ is Football, Mr Ripper and Roylion?

Gave great service at Fitzroy. Was very effective in 1983 when we should have won the flag.If I recall correctly ( which does not always happen) he hurt his knee in a final against Essendon which was partly responsible for a loss.
