must be the magic of Harry Potter

Maybe we could solve a few problems if we also sign Dimma as a captain coach & throw Benny out there as a CHF on weekends Executive on weekdays?

I need to ask a silly question, but someone may have the answer for me.

Why does the club have issues in developing its own ruckmen? It seems to not just be an issue with the ruckmen, but with the whole list, top end is good but the blokes playing in the 2s just don't seem to be guys we can develop to become top end performers.

Is it that we haven't recruited well enough, those blokes in the 2s are just no good, or we aren't spending enough $ in development?

I tend to think that it's the development side of things being under-resourced and that we need to be spending more in that area, but that's just my opinion.

I think its mostly because you can waste a lot of draft picks on ruckman out of the draft and have most of them bust, or taking up a lot of list space, using up a lot of development time, cost and draft picks that could be used on players who will more likely make it to AFL level. Given a lot of clubs will always have ruckmen they are developing but they can't get a game, its a lot easier to target one in free agency or as a trade for someone out of contract and you can skip all that early development.
You may also draft a young ruckman and develop them, but if they can't get a game they may even walk out for more opportunity themselves.

You'll never get a Naitanui or Goldstein this way, but I think when there are other areas that need attention its not a bad way to go. Maybe these new internationals may change the way things are done again.

Better to trade for a young ruck with around 3 years of development already under his belt. More favorable then drafting an 18 year old and developing him from scratch for 5 years. Less risk involved getting someone that's already been in the system for a few years, and less time spent developing them /having them clog the list.
