Ruck problem solved...

Apparently his father had a big build, so if he inherits that, we'll be sitting pretty.

And, as mentioned, he was the youngest player drafted, and only qualified for the draft by two days, so growing would not be out of the question.

Exactly. Our medicos and the like would have done all sorts of scans and the like to see if he had more growth.

If he's got another couple of cms in him, then he may well move into ruck territory.

The next question then would be will he be able to ruck as a skill. Some have said he did it at lower than TAC/State Champs level. Hard to say, but here's hoping we were watching.

Still a punt considering there is expectations of more growth in a pick.8 however he is capable of playing a key role as a forward and probably a more of a Cam Cloke prospect (not tallest ruckman come forward), except Reid is already better :p

Solved?

Yes perhaps solved in the MM spirit of I only want a ruck in the side if he can do something else as well (eg go forward and kick goals). Frase, Trav and now Reid can all.... play tall wing; be tall ruck rovers; go up forward and maybe for Trav and Reid even go to CHB.

Not solved if we want a palming ruck who can feed our new upcoming mids. I'd suspect that is next year's first or second pick or trade.

Meanwhile to support Josh's skinny bones, and the stress on Trav and maybe Reid (without killing Pebbles and Wakes to fly as well), we need a swing ruck for a couple of years (oh yeah, there's also Richards, but I try not to get my hopes too far up). Preferably one with a bit of beef and biff already.

In the PSD that probably leaves Bryan (lovely kick; not much actual rucking going on; perhaps MM or Gotchie can motivate him more than Pagan could?); Keating (yeah, he might complete the other half a season that Richards doesn't as back up to Josh? - and there's biff and beef and maybe some mentoring, but how much do we rely on yesterday's hero and bash-style of rucking?). Cartledge (sp?) - I recall him giving us a bath, but little else of him (not auger well that Dons have offed him but not because they wanted to draft another ruck - they haven't).

Then there'll be half a dozen other clubs or so before us in the PSD, some of whom may also want one of these rucks. Surely the Saints have already done their Old Man River ruck version in taking Gardiner, so suspect they'd go for one of the other two younger recycled rucks before us or head to the untold promise land before us to explore new devotees in Jacobs, Nugent, Hardy or Griffiths.

We owe a lot to Josh while this lot gets sorted out over the next couple of years. Probably, say, the captaincy in two or three years?

If (ouch) we ignore ruck in the PSD (relying instead on cardboard cut outs of Monkey coming on with all trainers to scare other teams?), I hope we then nab there or in rookies one of the small clearance specialists that have slipped through. Extractor we need, so that Neil Daniher can't say again "stop OBree and you stop Collingwood" (ie so much our prime extractor last season). Eg Bird, Adams, Hurley, sort of Batsanis (at least beautiful disposal from the centre square with him), and there may be others not yet recalled.

Did anyone actually ever hear about this guy before the draft? I have been keeping a close eye on the rookies (close-ish) and he hasnt seemed to be named as a top pick. Do you think he may have just slipped down the list to 20-something?

Would have loved an Armitage or Riewoldt

Thats just me...

Was rated higher than Riewoldt by most.

Don't think that we've drafted a spud because you didn't do enough research. His name was in every phantom draft, usually in the first round.

Are they allowed to? You can tell a lot by wrist growth plates but I don’t know if you are allowed to do the scans on draftees. At 197cm he’s a short ruckman. Seems a KPP to me. If we are banking on growth to get a ruckman that abut shows how much regard we have for the position.

Be nice to take a ruckman as a ruckman. Novel idea I know but worth a shot I reckon.

I have no issue with taking Reid. I wouldn’t have the faintest idea how good he is. I just don’t get the plan. More to the point, I don’t think we have had a plan this century.

You suspect? Personally I suspect our club has been taken over by aliens from traintrackland who refuse to watch any games. What would make you think we would EVER take a genuine ruckman?

i know we should get that giant in the Welcome to melbourne commercials .Has anybody seen those commercials this guy is about 9 feet tall.Just what we need 2 times the size of sandilands.PERRRRRRRFECT, RUCK PROBLEM SOLVED.

Whats wrong with Josh?

Nothing.

He cannot ruck a full game every week, and if he gets injured we'd be left without a back up in that area. Also need to have someone in case he is getting beat in the ruck.

I think Reid was picked as a top 10 by the Age newspaper

I doubt Ben Reid was picked up with ruck in mind. Does anyone know his vertical leap from draft camp?

I think Matthew Clarke is our best chance of a quality ruckman who might be able to play out a year or two. Chris Bryan is not the answer IMHO.
