Clearly we have had a huge turnover in the ruck area (possibly a record).
Just wanted to gather people's thoughts as to the line up in the ruck.
Obviously Ackland is the number one.
Mclaren stumbles into number two by default (but for how long).

My question is who do people think will be the next in line assuming that one of the two above (hopefully McLaren.....er......or hopefully not Ackalnd:D ) is down on form/injured during the year:

Options:
Hamspon - is he capable of playing in year 1?
Aisake - has he learnt enough
Cloke (daggers) - probably next in line IMO
Jacobs - looks big enough in these pics.....could he be the smokey?

Thoughts?

After attending training i would have to say the order will be this.

1. Ackland (only viable option at this stage but im happy with his selection)
2. Cloke (barring iunjury)
3. McLaren (this will be his last season i feel if he doesnt do anything)
4. Jacobs (has a more ready body than Hampson at this stage but the rolls will reverse in years to come)
5. Hampson (i wouldnt rush his young body just yet. Let him grow this year maybe play 1 or 2 games and not throw him into the deep end. Let his loose in 3-4 years time)
6. Aisake O'hAilpin (not sure yet about his rucking abilities, from what ive seen he hasnt picked up AFL as quick as his brother)

Gees guys all of a sudden we have 6 ruckman albiet 3 havent played a game of senior AFL yet and 2 (McLaren & Cloke) have major ???? about them.

Go Blues

Cheers

Strawb Jacobs is a massive unit for 18...any chance of playing next year???

Our new Big Red does look a good size:thumbsu:
Shame he is only a rookie:eek:
We do have six rucks, but three are undersized and the others are developing:eek:
Lets just hope Ackland holds up as although he is undersized he can compete athletically:thumbsu:
We should pick up a good ruck prospect next season in the draft to add to our developers, but we are really looking thin for a season or two.

He needs to fill out a bit before he plays senior footy. Looked pretty impressive at the champs, so i'm happy we picked him up in the RD. Still think we'll take another developing ruckman in next years draft as well.

Yes we have 3 very tall skinny kids who have never played a game and 3 taller big people who have played a few OK games.
I hope 1 or 2 of these turn out OK because that is the best we could expect.
Please keep it in you pants , everyone.

Only if someone gets a long term injury or retires.
Can a player on the rookie list simply be selected during the season or do they first need to be elevated to the senior list?

I would think physically Jacobs would be the one promoted if needed to go. O'hAilpin & Hampson look like they need more development.

Having said that however, I'm just glad that we have 3 developing on our list, 1 who can ruck and well 2 who can pinch hit at best. Really concerned about the pinch hitters.

A place on the senior list must be opened up to elevate a rookie. Usually due to a "long term injury", but also due to retirement mid season etc.

Unless we have a nominated rookie. We had the opportunity to have a nominated rookie last year, but didn't do so. I think we are still entitled to.

If so, we should nominate Jackson. He would be available for selection week in week out for the Carlton senior team, despite remaining on the rookie list for 2007.

Given his height and weight, I would have thought he would have been a better option at our second selection ahead of cloke.

That means he could have been available for next year.

He has the height, and weight (100kgs) to at least hold his own.

With 3 months in pre season he will have toned up more.

That would have meant we could have picked another kid in the rookie draft.

Anyway, Cloke will ruck number 2 for us, Mclaren couldhardly move last week.

he may have the height and weight but he also has a very young body.As an example look to Rugby Leagues Sonny Williams. Is hugely built, but still very young and subsequently gets injured a lot.Physically theres no more a demanding position than ruck, would hate to see him break down

Will that stop us from playing Bryce gibbs next season.

Or playing Kennedy or Murphy considering their injuries from year one?

Thanks BB and Jermias.
Essentially I'm asking if a player on the rookie list can play an AFL game.
From memory last year Jackson and Smith both played AFL games, so were they either elevated or nominated?

Elevated.
Justin Davies was on the long term injury list early on, Smith got his spot. Later in the season it gets easier to put someone, say with a 5 week injury, on the long term list and elevate a rookie. Can't recall off hand which player this happened to for Jackson to get his spot, possibly Saddington - anyone?

So yes, as J points out, there are three ways a rookie can play an AFL game.
1. Be a nominated rookie
2. A spot on the list becomes avaiable via
a) Retirement
b) Long term injury listed player

Thanks guys, I've only been into footy since about 2001 (tragic for a Blues fan, right? Then again, I started at rock bottom and can only ever look forward to better times!) and already I am running out of friends who know more about footy than I do -am loving these forums!! :D
