Total hypocrisy from 9. They've said for years that rugby doesn't rate in Melbourne then go and make this decision to show it LIVE (not even on delay!!)

If I was an NRL fan I'd be completely pissed off.

Don't forget this is the opening of the new stadium and they have shown RL tests before live into Melbourne.

There would be a lot of interest if this was soccer, union or an NFL game at the new stadium.

We love our sport, opening a new stadium is like celebrating the birth of a new child. :p

It's frustrating for sure.

Sunday's game is live too.

Going to be a great weekend.

I'll certainly watch it and then switch to the footy at 8:30pm.

A night of sport. :thumbsu:

I gave up watching Channel 7's friday night super delayed crap ages ago.

Will watch the Rugby and just have the radio on in the background for the footy.:thumbsu:

Reasonable points but I wonder if this was a Storm game whether 9 would have a live telecast. Not withstanding the interest in the new stadium I don't think so.

Live against the gate, its sold out ... remember the Packers ran 9 during the Eddie days, dont anymore ... chief David Gyngell (boned Eddie & gave him a bus fare home) is a big NRL fan, the new shareholders dont follow a footy code, just the mighty $.

Very good ratings for the League test. Almost beat BH&G and not too far off the AFL in Melbourne. I'm surprised it did that well, the ratings are higher than the Union tests recently. Bit of a dour game though unfortunately.

I would have thought it was far from a good result for Channel 9 in Melbourne. Look at the ratings. Thrashed by Channel 10 with Masterchef and a repeat of NCIS, whilst smashed by Channel 7/7TWO with the AFL, Better Homes and Gardens and 60 Minute Makeover.

I guess the live Rugby League test match did just beat the ABC with Stateline, Collectors and Waking the Dead. Oh and it did rate better than Hitler's Bodygurad on SBS. Is just beating the ABC and SBS in prime time on a Friday night with Australia winning a close test match what you would describe as very good ratings? Oh and lets not forget the novelty factor of the opening of Melbourne's new stadium.

Pretty good effort to average under 100k less than the AFL on the other channel in Victoria :thumbsu:

I don't think the programmers at Channel 9 Melbourne would think that.

I thought it would be interesting to see how Channel 9 went in Melbourne this week as opposed to last week where a live Rugby League match was not broadcast in the 7:30pm timeslot.

Oh dear, not a good result as you can see.

Last week, Channel 9 in Melbourne did much better without Rugby League dragging their share down. As you can see above when compared to last Friday night below, Channel 9 lost thousands of viewers whilst all other networks benefitted with thousands of extra viewers as a result of Channel 9 showing Rugby League live in Melbourne.

The only time the Swans got a rating like that in Sydney was when they made the GF.

Fantastic result.

Fantastic result.

You keep telling yourself that darlin. The facts as I posted above are there for all to see. Thousands of viewers lost for Channel 9 when Rugby League is broadcast. I would have thought the novelty factor of the new stadium and a Rugby League test match where Australia just won would have drawn a much bigger audience in the sporting capital of Australia. Clearly that wasn't the case.

Meanwhile, I was just thinking what the NRL GF tv ratings will be like this year with no chance of the Storm participating. Oh dear, Sunday night prime time disaster on the cards for Channel 9 in Melbourne.

Lol...fantastic?

Losing comprehesively to the other two major channels on prime tv slot?

Nation vs Nation?

New stadium the biggest drawcard?

I think average at best...;)

PS
Ugly boring game, pity, had the chance to put up a show but failed. Worst thing is the atmosphere was very poor...very different to the Origin games, infact it would have generated more interest had it been an Origin game, would have suited the launch of the new stadium if it wanted to launch RL game

Actually what this stadium should have had was Wallabies vs ALL Blacks or Wallabies vs England...or Australia vs New Zealand in the soccer would have had a better atmosphere and ratings...Channel 9 have failed...
