Toast Ruggles delisted

While the decision itself isn't terrible. It's a terrible decision to delist him with Aaron Black still on the list. Defender/Forward whatever don't care. Ruggles imo wasn't going to make it but showed something. Aaron Black and others are like Sam Blease all over again. Why are we delisting reserve players over token recruits that will be lucky to play an AFL game? Ruggles might actually be worth another 5 games in his career unlike these token players we keep recruiting.
North paid basically all of Black's contract, probably the main reason we even picked him up in the first place.

Black isn't out of contract anyway - so we couldn't delist him if we wanted to.

However, were it an option, I would be still delisting Ruggles. For the reason you mention above, and the fact that we are far thinner in our forward stocks than backline. I liked him - but as many have said already, he was superfluous to our needs this year.

Ruggles got a right place at the right time call with a lot of hard work from himself at the time when he got picked up.

Sadly for him, he's got a wrong place at the wrong time call now. OOC, missed with injury, had some indifferent form at times and sadly people remember the shank kicks to opposition and poor disposal before the 1%ers he did well.

And if the club was totally mental out of their heads, surely he would have been picked up by another club.

I had no issue with his time here and wanted him to do well - it just panned out poorly for him.

Ruggles still had a good season at AFL level in 2016... plenty of higher profile and hyped up kids don't make it that far before delisting.

It's a cruel thing at times, but I can't imagine anyone would regret the chance to go through it and pull on a guernsey to play in front of a huge crowd at the G in a big game.

I liked him. Had a bit of mongrel and a scary poker face. (Kind of guy you don't like to line up on as a forward) With some breaks he could have prospered, but that HBF/pocket 'position' is now well populated and also seems to be a placeholder for players we don't know what to do with, so he was always going to be very low in the pecking order.

Yeah, I liked him as a back pocket, but I like Bews much better, unfortunately. Stewart has the other BP, Tuohy on HBF locked in, and Kolo will take the other flank as third man up, as far as I can predict. I like how our backline is looking, really.

Black was contracted for 2018 as was stanley ruggles was OOC at the wrong time thats it.

Don’t fully get the decision to cut him really.

He is an alright back up player, much like a David Johnson type handy.

If a player or two goes down he is an acceptable replacement.

I understand if we just where hard pressed for list spots, but otherwise I would have thought retaining him for peanuts as an emergency given we are in a premiership race isn’t such a bad idea.

He isn’t best 22, but he is a pretty good 23-27th type.

I’m more shocked that another club didn’t pick him up considering there’s a few club out there that could use him, personally I hope he bounces back and finds himself on a list in ‘19

Behind Bews, 2E, Thurlow, Guthrie, Small Guthrie, even Kolo as someone who they will play on small and medium forwards... at what point would he even come close to getting a game? Poor decision making and execution, limited speed, only compliment people ever seem to find for him was that he was 'hard at it' when he used to 'fly the flag'. Tripe.

Could be the same call next year with Lincoln. Hopefully not.

I liked the mongrel in him, surprised he didnt get much of a go this year.

Problem is his disposal is poor and I'm happy the club let him go, just unfortunate that there are plenty more list cloggers who are contracted.

Which uncontracted player would you have delisted to keep him though? Other than cut hayball instead (re rookied presumably due to contractual obligations) and rookie ruggles i cant see what else we could have done given how few players we had out of contract.

Agree.

Given the circumstances with contracts and spots, his head was probably the one that had to roll.

Still viewed him as alright depth for a top table side.

The knocks on his kicking and speed probably killed it.

Reads play well has Aggression mongrel and will attack at every chance.

He wasn’t at all a terrible player. Got involved in a few of our games.

I think Ruggles was harshly done. Shame he didn't get another crack in 2018.

IMO he is better than Hayball who got re-drafted. His agro and bull toughness was something we lacked for a while.

I also believe it's the factor that made Bews step up to the next level and final compete harder.

It still looks too slow to me. I would like to see a line breaking running 1/2 back in the Wojcinski mold, but we just don't have one.

Considering he signed at Leopold I think he might have decided he’s not going to give it another shot.

I'd have rather had him on our list then not given the positional flexibility of many our small defender options and it would have been tempting to take the cap hit and delist Waybill anyway. Ultimately what went against Ruggles is that him not being on our list doesn't hurt us.
